Without any questions, Texas is the worst place to drive your car! I live in Austin and the roads are terrible with rocks, parts from cars and tires on every road plus the road itself is broken and not safe! I have had more parts of my car broken and ruined in Texas in 2 years I did in 25 years driving anyplace else! I've lived in California, Ohio, Florida, England and France and Texas is the worst by far! Also the Police Pigs are worst in Texas than anyplace else! Okay, I've calmed down a little, but I was violently angry not 40 minutes ago. I never had this problem in California, even on notorious Hwy 5, with tractor trailers and motorhomes everywhere. But, in Texas I see this all the time and today my number came up. I had to drive from Houston to Austin to do a product demo for a customer. All in all a pleasant drive. I had visited Barnes & Noble last night and picked up an Audio book, the latest and sad to say last offering by Douglas Adams (author of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and many more) on CD. I had been to Austin and done my duty for the powers that be and was enjoying the 4th CD in a 7 CD set I had earlier put into the CD changer while en route home. I was cruising along through the middle of nowhere about 80Mph in the right lane of what had now opened up to a 6 lane divided hwy. I came upon a minivan as I crested one of the rolling hills and had gotten about 20 feet from it when I decided to change into the center lane to overtake. Just as I cleared the minivan I saw the stationary bulk of a truck tire carcass in the center lane. Another car sped by in the left lane and I was already along side the minivan. Microseconds later the tire carcass had ripped out the undertray, brake ducts, fog lights, mesh grill and tore off my pork chops. I had just replaced all of these bits not 6 months ago and this tread cap off a truck tire took them all out. The front of my car is a mess, yet I can't help to think that Chester and David have it much worse. It just annoys me that this didn't have to happen. With all the tire technology available, can't tire manufacturers design a tire that doesn't leave carcasses all over out nations highways for us to have to look at and a select few of us to run over? Semi-truck tires are obscenely expensive so most worn tires are retreaded and this new tread typically does not bond (vulcanize) to the body of the tire nearly as well as if it were molded at the factory. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> To: "E36M3" <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Thursday, October 03, 2002 8:00 PM Subject: [E36M3] Another reason why driving in Texas SUCKS! > Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2002 18:54:25 -0500 > From: "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> > Subject: Another reason why driving in Texas SUCKS! > > Okay, I've calmed down a little, but I was violently angry not 40 minutes > ago. This is due to the fact that it's far cheaper to retread a tire than it is to replace it. Since the trucks do so many miles, the cost adds up quickly. So it's not the tire falling apart, but the retread debonding... Not that it makes you feel any better about it. Sorry to hear about your car... -josh --- Mel Silva <melsilva@mindspring.com> wrote: > Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2002 18:54:25 -0500 > From: "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> > Subject: Another reason why driving in Texas SUCKS! > > Okay, I've calmed down a little, but I was violently > angry not 40 minutes > ago. Yep, it's 12mm. I replaced my rear OEM shocks with the Koni DA's and drilled everything out to fit the 12mm shaft. For the JTD RSM's I removed the center sleeve, replaced it with a brass sleeve I found at Sear Hardware with just the right dimensions and reamed out the 'his' bushings to 14mm ID. Bingo! Perfect fit. Jim, at 32,000 miles my rear shocks had good compression, but the shaft had no rebound! Such is life on PA State roads. ;-p PS: Just had the fronts installed yesterday. They are Koni SA's. Love the ride. Better than stock set "soft", (when my rears are on click #1 for compression, I'm told this is the same compression setting that the SA's are tuned to). I have rebound set to one turn from full soft in front and 1.5 turns in back. Very compliant on the street in my opinion. Autox this Sunday, can't wait to dial these babies up ;-)) I purchased my struts/shocks from Bimmerhaus (Bob Tunnell and Jim L.). Great guys, great service, and a real pleasure to work with. They did the cut'n'gut for me at a reasonable price too. Just had to give them a plug! Good luck, Jim. Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 BSP Champion 2001

#8. replacing brake rotors - from Mdriver13@aol.com

Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2002 23:42:18 EDT From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: replacing brake rotors Group, Just had a modified Insp. II done at the dealer yesterday (everything I couldn't or wouldn't want to do myself). This Dealer is good, they inspected the bushings front and rear. According to them they are fine, however, they did mention that the front rotors are near the minimum caliper spec. I have 32,000 miles on the car with the original Jurid pads. Is this normal? I never had to replace rotors on any car I've owned. The master tech told me it's more common on the M3's to wear out the rotors than the pads. Is this true?
