PF97's are great on the first stop and all successive stops in my experience. They have left permanent gobs of ugliness on my forged rims, in spite of hours of elbow grease. I actually posted something about this earlier... Interesting to note that the PF97 dust just wipes easily off the powdercoated IFG wheels, after months of being on the wheels. On the forged wheels, I have found that the earlier you wash the wheels, the easier to get the brake crud off them. R4 brake pads are good on the third stop, but probably not as good on the whole as PF97s. This makes it dicey on the street, and I wouldn't let my SO drive the car with R4 pads, since the car doesn't stop well when the pads are cold. Since I only tracked them a couple of times, I can't comment on the dust issue. Hawk blues definitely get brake crud on the wheels, and I have spent some long hours cleaning, unfortunately, with less than complete success... On the Miata wheels, I have taken to wiping them down with cooking oil prior to the event, and then hopefully washing them pretty soon after the event. The answer is track wheels. That or maybe powdercoated ones. Margaret

I'm probably going to give their 10w40 a test and will need to order some within the next couple of weeks. Also... anyone with opinions on Piloti shoes? I've been considering getting a pair as track weekend driving shoes, that are also comfortable enough to wear around away from the track. (any good online prices for those either??) Thanks, Jonathan L.

First things first...exhaust noise is subjective as Jonathan mentioned. I had the UUC System U straight tips on my 95 M3. It sounded awesome when I first installed it(first 'mod' on the M). Shortly after a few weeks, I finally came to my senses and realized the loud drone between 1.5K - 4K RPM other than the fact of setting off at least 2 car alarms leaving every morning in my apt. complex. It's excessively loud between 1.5K - 4K RPM, and quiets up after 4K. I'm running a 100% Stainless Supersprint now and couldn't be happier. If comparing to stock, it sounds like a hot stock exhaust when the SS exhaust is cold, and proportionally louder when the SS exhaust is hot. -Justin Paek 95 M3

This increased temperature also raises the pressure of the cylinder (PV=nRT). This means that there is a heat loss factor in a compression test, which is going to be dependant on the time it takes for the cylinder to rise. Hopefully this isn't a factor during normal starter-cranking speeds, but if you did a compression test when turning the motor by hand then it may return lower results. This may also be why they suggest to remove plugs during the test - less load on the starter (from the other 5 cyls) allows the engine to turn faster, resulting in a closer to ideal adiabatic compression. Aside from sounding like a race car on track, I really like the fact that you can hear any little bit of throttle input I give the car. It actually makes it easier to show students exactly when I'm getting on the throttle versus when they're getting on it. I've had my UUC System U since it was introduced. I love the sound, and I also like setting off car alarms (never had one, never will). That said, it's definitely quieted down over about 10k miles or so - I don't set off as many alarms as I used to. There is a drone in the viscinity of 3k RPM, but it's lessened as well over time. Exhaust sound is truly subjective. Nothing beats the sound of my exhaust coming off the gas at lights and stop signs. - John S. #10. M3 LTW Microfilter - from Neil Maller

Date: Tue, 08 Oct 2002 11:31:09 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: M3 LTW Microfilter A friend of mine with an M3 LTW has failed to discover the microfilter in its usual spot behind the glove box. We assume this is because the LTW has no A/C. My (British) Haynes manual, which unlike Bentley does cover cars with no A/C, seems to indicate that the filter is accessed from within the engine compartment by removing the heater blower assembly. Can anyone confirm? Neil 96 M3
