I've done the Saratoga Springs to Tampa but never NYC to Miami but they are close to same distance. I'd definitely stop somewhere about half way. Worst part of your trip is having to follow I-95 through NJ, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington DC. Once you get past that poor excuse for a roadway you get all the southern tourist crap and bombarded with peanut and tobacco adds on billboards hiding the view. Overall as a drive it sucks but I did it because I couldn't afford to fly the whole family on vacation that year. Never again. If I had to do it I'd go west, down I-81 and take 2-4 days visiting battlefields and making a vacation out of it. Skyline Drive is beautiful as is the Blue Ridge Parkway. But a tad out of your way. Now I pay for all my pleasure travel with airline miles. One of the few benefits of being an itinerent consultant. Unless you have to have your car there you'd be better off flying. Well, to be totally honest here, since 9/11, Ive become a real pussy flier. No, thats a lie...I was a pussy flier before 9/11 even. Its just that after 9/11, its gotten even worse. At least, before, I would fly if I had to. Now, I dont think so. I kind of convinced myself that from a cost perspective, It'd probably cost in the same ballpark. I figure gas would cost about 130 bucks. And a hotel for 1 night about 50 bucks. As far as wear and tear, well, thats hard to measure. But Im not doing much other driving these days, so the car would probably like it :--)\ Paul Elliott --------------------------------------------------------- '99 White M3; 45K miles; Dinan stage II SC kit with 6" RMS crank pulley: 11 psi; AA Aquamist Water/Methanol Injection; Fikse FM-10s; X-Brace; Dinan Koni Suspension; Stygar SS and Clutch Stop; Sound by Polk, Excelon, JLAudio ----- Original Message ----- From: "matthew c. mead" <mmead-bmw@goof.com> To: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Cc: "E36M3" <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Tuesday, October 08, 2002 4:27 PM Subject: Re: [E36M3] too far a drive? > On Tue, Oct 08, 2002 at 03:20:05PM -0500, Paul Elliott wrote: > > Driving alone from the New York area to the Miami Fla area, its about 1500 > > miles I believe. Do you have the Service & Warranty Manual that came with the car? If so, the info is in there. It's also listed in the Bentley manual, if you have one of those. As far as whether it's worth having the dealer do it, depends. How many miles on the car? What kind of use - daily driving, track, autox, beating the h*ll out of it? Inspection I isn't much more than an oil change and doing some visual checks on the car. If you're half-way capable, you can do much of it yourself. For a car that sees track or autox use, I would still have an experienced mechanic perform the "checks". It's a lot easier on a lift, and an experienced eye can spot stuff you might not catch. My 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - been ignored a bit, big repairs coming up :-( 1993 325is #44 KP - just checked over, almost ready for Buttonwillow

Carey, As for a 'drive', as far as 'drives' go, you make this one sound like a real turkey! Is it laden with traffic the whole way? I mean, I know that, as far as scenery goes, it aint exactly the rocky mountains, or even the White mountains for that matter. But, at least if there were stretches where you could really let 'er rip, that would help. Worst would be if its loaded with traffic, and cops most of the way. That would just about turn me back into a reluctant flier again. If its got no scenery, if its loaded with cops, and /or its loaded with traffic, Id just about drop the idea.
