Wheels are in very good shape with a few small nicks and scratches - pictures available on request. Asking $600 OBO, and since I don't want to have to deal with shipping I will deliver free to just about anywhere in California (I need an excuse for a road trip anyway.) Tires not included, but I would entertain offers on my never-used 225/45 Pilot Sport spare. (FYI, the never-used spare *wheel* is included in the set I'm selling.) - Bill

Well worth it IMO. Yes, I have cut a hole in the top of the carpet so I can reach in there, however my stock speakers have some kinda black plastic deal (amp?) hanging underneath them that takes up alot of space. Enough space that I can't get in there with them in place. I'm about to add my Fosgate amp to the system tho and disable the stock rear speaker amps, so I hope to remove them from the rear speakers, which should give me the space I need to access the shock top. -josh > > How much were the SA/externally adjustable rear > shocks? > > > Couldn't you cut an access hole in the top of the > fuzzy trunk liner right > over the shocks and directly under the speakers? > There's maybe 2" of > clearance under my H-K rear speaker housings, and > the top of my "normal" > Koni SA shock is maybe 1" under that. > > Looks as if it should be possible unless the > adjuster knob is unusually > bulky. > > You could make a clean 3" diameter hole with a hole > saw, then use any BMW 75 > mm diameter front strut tower cap (flat Z8 or domed > E34) to cover the access > when not in use. > > Neil > 96 M3 > ===== Josh Wyte Momentum Motorsports 508-833-3024 After 5 pm EST __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? #3. Gasoline smell after fill-up - from butchberney@attbi.com
Top
Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 17:13:34 +0000 From: butchberney@attbi.com Subject: Gasoline smell after fill-up The first time this happened was last week. The next morning, after filling my car the day before, the garage had a strong smell of gasoline. It went away the following day, so I figured some had spilled in the overflow. Unfortunately, I filled up yesterday, and encountered the same problem this morning. I am guessing that something in the filler neck could be the problem, or maybe even the gas cap, but I thought I would check the "knowlege base" before digging into this :) Anyone else have this problem before? Thanks, Butch

You asked for caveats, so here goes. 1) Bentley's doesn't have procedure for replacing the Upper Timing Chain Tensioner (UTCT), per se. 2) Bentley's covers the UTCT in other procedures, such as replacing the VANOS or rebuilding the cylinder head. 3) Therefore, the procedures assume you have the VANOS out, and will be re-calibrating the chain advance. 4) Special tools are required to set up the VANOS. It wasn't straightforward for doing in you own garage. 5) The exhaust cam sprocket is slotted - replacing it in the exact same spot is the challenge. It's not "pinned" for a single location, as with simpler, conventional cam/sprocket setups. With the benefit of hindsight, I can provide a procedure. As I said, I replaced the UTCT on my own, in my garage. I owe NickG a huge debt - our phone conversation and his excellent guidance & advice is why I succeeded. Set the engine to TDC. Get slack in the chain, near the UTC. Remove exhaust sprocket. All the chain slack is at the top of the chain. With the sprocket removed, you can now replace the UTCT. Replace the exhaust sprocket. Position the sprocket so all slack is at the top of the chain. Do not move the car or engine during this procedure. You DO NOT want to change the exhaust cam relationship with the VANOS. If you want more details, contact me off-line. You can do this, but go into it with your eyes open and knowing the Bentley won't be much help. I got my parts at thepartsbin.com Regards, Brian -------------------- 1 -------------------- Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 10:11:02 -0500 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: I've found my marbles Hello, Gruppe- In the process of elimination, I'm eying (earing) the upper chain tensioner for the source of a loud rattle on the front of the valve cover, right next to the VANOS unit. When blipping the throttle from the engine compartment, as the revs drop and the chain/valves are unloaded, I get a nice, loud klacking that I can feel if I put my hand on the cover. I just had the VANOS replaced, but as Chester pointed out, they probably didn't replace the sprocket/gear but just the solenoid and plunger unit (my shiny desk art). So my questions: Where is a good source for the upper, secondary chain tensioner (already replaced the lower) and are there any caveats or things to watch for while replacing it that aren't covered in the Bentley? Thanks all- Steve

It's probably leaking hoses at the top of the tank. Accessible by removing the back seat. Seat removable by yanking up on the front lip of the seat. I've had my mechanic change the flex disc on both cars, as it's a lot easier with a lift. We removed the exhaust, headers back. It's a lot easier to access the flex disc this way. Maybe someone who's done this themselves can give you some DIY tips. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 KP

You have to unbolt the driveshaft center support in order to kink it in the center to be able to remove the driveshaft from the flex disc. There are a total of 6 bolts (three from each direction) that have nuts you need to loosen. Use anti-sieze when reinstalling the exhaust manifold/cat nuts. I can count links, and if the cam is fixed and the sprocket unbolts separately, I might make arrangements to rent 'The Apparatussususs' and replace that while I'm in there. On that note, are there any other elements in that vicinity that could bear replacement, or would the VANOS, sprocket and tensioner pretty much cover it? (Aside from Schricks, Ti retainers, F1 pneumatic conversion kit, Mr. Fusion, etc. .. .) Thanks, Steve Chester Wong wrote: > It's not too bad.
