I actually have flipped the tires on the rims before, but because of the way they wore on the HS car with no added camber, I think it'll probably be best to run them as-is with the camber that I run. It does seem like flipping them after every event could be a bit excessive. I think I will keep these until they're corded, just to accurately guage the longevity of them, but I'll still strap on some new ones for the next couple of events, just in case we happen to get some rain. For what it's worth, I want to give a big thanks to Margaret Cheng for posting the Vilven Tire phone number and pricing on Toyos... $175 Shipped!! Of course, they're backordered right now, so I'll have to spend more, but next time... You need to drop the shock and flex the RSM central bushing with the shaft or a screwdriver. Then you can see whether the rubber is separating. But you know what? By the time you get to that point you might as well go ahead and replace them anyway if they're original E36 pattern RSMs. Use the E46 M3 RSMs unless you're a track junkie, in which case there are some aftermarket parts which may be of interest. Then, I'll get on the parkway and be in fourth for a few minutes. So by the time I shift to fifth, the car's warmed up, and the fifth gear gate is back. So, until I read your thread, I wasnt aware of the problem. Imagine my surprise when I went out to the car, rammed it over to fifth, and the damn thing just stayed there!!!! I was stunned. I really dont know how long its been like this. Its one of those issues that you have to become aware of in order for you to realize youve got the problem. You should see the thread weve got going over on bimmerforums.... Almost by the minute, guys are chiming in with, 'add me to the list' kinds of posts. Weve got about 20-25 readers who have now noticed the problem. Which on a limited readership sounds like a huge ratio to me, and I sense the problem is potentially huge out there once owners begin to learn what to look for. I usually park my car with the car in first gear. Last night, I parked it with shifter in neutral. This morning, I just used first and second. When I shifted to third, I felt the gate was still there as we use that gate to guide us into third. After about 5 to 10 minutes only, I then gingerly tried fifth for a second, and when I took it out, it went right back to center neutral! I dont know. Could it be getting better? Could parking in neutral make a difference? Could it be just not that serious? Maybe parts of all of the above. But honestly, if there are so many people that have the problem once they know what to look for, how come my dealer srvc writer whos a veteran there wasnt familiar with the issue? Weird..... But i both thank you, and curse you, for bringing it to my attention! Just kidding. Im glad to be aware of it. At least I know now, when its happening, I have to use a slightly different shifting pressure to get it into third til the gate comes back, but so long as the gate does come back after a few minutes, and so long as all gears are available, and so long as it doesnt get worse, if this is the worse thing that ever happens to my car, I'll be a happy camper! So I included a couple in a routine spare parts order I was about to place with The BMW Store (Cincinnati, OH). Their price is $4.80 each, discounted. On the off chance that there might be one in stock, I stopped at my local dealer's parts counter this morning. They had one - for $11.40! Local stock is certainly worth something to me, but I'm sure glad this isn't a high dollar part. Neil 96 M3

Unless someone has real information such as what the exact cause is and how to fix it, I could care less about anecdotal evidence or guesses at what could be wrong or dealer experiences. If it's broken, fix it..simple as that. Whether the fix is swapping trannies or opening it up, so be it. My third gear synchro is a bit weird, but I'm not going to post that if I double clutch, it's fine or if I worship the Bavarian gods, it'll be okay for the day. Parking the car with the car in or out of gear is irrelevant. Have you tried parking the car, opening the door, turning the key to position 1, then closing the door, then opening the windows, then sliding the seats back and forwards and backwards (in that order specifically), then closing the windows, then turning the key to position 0, then opening the door and then pulling the key out and then closing the door? It isn't hard when it was so fresh in my memory and in my inbox since it was just last Friday :-) Actually, I am not trying to be a smart @ss about this. I hopped into my M3 last night and played around with the shifter for a while it was cold. I pushed it as far right as I could in the neutral gate and as far left. There was absolutely no sticking at all. This is a 1995 M3 with 37k miles and Red Line D4 ATF and UUC Pro Comp EVO shifter. The shortened throw of the shifter makes the force to push it left or right seem a little more excessive than stock but it is very springy and it snaps back to the neutral 3-4 gate every time immediately. I am going to play close attention to it over time to see if I can detect deterioration. I wonder if certain years of production are more likely to suffer or be inflicted and whether driving style and/or fluid usage/change interval comes into play, etc. Best regards, Rich
