I was told the key with buttons was part of the system that came integrated with E46 3 series cars, and since mine was an E36 3 series, I couldn't get it. It sounds like they may have introduced that with the first E46 models and put it on some of the 99 E36 models. #4. E36 M3 master cylinder vs 325is master cylinder - from Patrick Buthmann

Date: Wed, 23 Oct 2002 15:08:54 -0400 From: "Patrick Buthmann" <patrick@teutonic.ca> Subject: E36 M3 master cylinder vs 325is master cylinder I need to replace my master cylinder shortly (darn, is EVERYTHING wear and tear on this car?), and I'm wondering if there is ANY differences between the E36 325is master cylinder, and the E36 M3 master cylinder. The part #'s are different, but in BMW speak, this doesn't always mean much. Can anyone tell me *for sure* what the differences are, if any? Is it the standard ///M part with 3 times the pricetag for equivalent functionality, or not? Or, are they different pistons / capacities, and the part is worth the extra $$$? I do not want to put anything under the seat rails > that will raise the seat height! You're right: it's not easy to attach an eyebolt below the seat front. For one thing the actual solid floorpan is several inches below the surface of the carpet. Here are some suggestions for using stock M3 seats with the sub strap brought up between the movable thigh support and the seat base. (Note: this is a little further forward than the optimal +/- 20 degrees below the buckle, but that's a limitation of using the stock seat.) First, the centrally located slide mechanism of the thigh support means you'll have to bring a single sub strap up one side or the other of it. This will pull to the side in use. For this reason I used a dual strap, one passing either side of the slider. This has proven very comfortable, and helps minimize possible abrasion problems of the strap against the slider. I brought the subs back underneath the seat, snap-mounting them to a flat steel bar that spans the the rear seat rail mounts. The stock seat rails have built-in spacers underneath, but my mounting bar has holes big enough that the spacers pass through. For this reason the bar does not affect seat height at all. Under the front slots I cut in the plastic seat pan (use a Dremel or similar) there's a steel crossmember that's part of the seat frame. On their way to the rear the subs make a right angle bend around this crossmember, which serves to locate them properly. Because of the crossmember, applying tension to the sub straps does not tend to make them pull either forward or rearward - they maintain the required downward pull. However moving the seat on its rails does change the effective length of the sub straps, so you need to figure out your settings and leave everything alone. I've seen pictures of a 6 point mount with the subs under the front seat rail mounts. Haven't tried that myself. My shoulder harness straps are a wrap mount to the roll bar. The outside lap belt mounts to a Brey-Kraus adapter at the stock seat belt point at the B-pillar base. The inside lap goes to an eye-bolt (with backing plate) through the floor in the rear footwell. Be careful drilling holes there. There's wiring inside the car, and fuel and brake lines under it. Neil 96 M3

The M3 one is bigger capacity, but I don't recall by how much over the 325 one. (We just put an M3 master in the 325is race car for that reason - bigger.) No, you were begging the rest of us to not talk about it anymore, to "...let this tread die". >The request was to quit the endless 'sharing the experience' posts and >updates on how many other people he found with the same problem. Two words - "delete key". Someone else's "experience" may be different from mine, and by "sharing" we may (hopefully) arrive at a solution. >But if all you have to contribute is a 'me too', than >please consider. I'm still unclear as to how you have the RIGHT to tell me (or anyone) what to post to this List. If you don't want to read any more posts on a particular subject, delete them, but don't tell the rest of us to stop talking about it. (i.e. if YOU are tired of a thread, stop listening, but don't tell the rest of us to stop talking.) I thought this list had evolved to the point of being a "community", were we all could discuss various E36 M3 issues, not a "technical forum" where all we get are questions/problems and answers/solution, but no discussion. Guess I was wrong. Jim Bassett
