The downsides are that 1) you can't control the CD changer (until 12/95 or something like that?) which is no problem for me - that's why its an in-dash CD; and 2) there is no speedometer input, so the speed-sensitive volume doesn't work. Otherwise, I'm crazy about the in-dash CD that matches the interior. My sister and mom have put aftermarket units in other E36's and I really hated the cheesy too-many-buttons complexity (even with basic radio/cd players). Just didn't look right in the car, and too hard to operate while driving. Install is a snap with the proper tools, and sound quality is greatly improved even with the stock speakers. I have read several archive posts that indicate that those with the C33 radio platform can "upgrade" to the CD43 with no problem. But from the few images I've seen on-line, I don't believe that my car has the C33 radio. My radio looks like this: http://www.bimmerparts.com/bmw_radios.htm So, is the CD43 a simple "plug-n-play" upgrade for my system? Gotta say I love the new Z4, and that Clive Owen is an underrated superhero. If anyone saw the first set of episodes, they know there was a subplot which was pretty cool. Well, they did it again and it is quite elaborate. I was working on it for about 8 hrs with another lister culminating in collecting the 6 keys at 4:30 this morning (not giving anything else away). Much thanks to you Chris, and good luck to all those who attempt it. It is the most fun you will have had in a long time. GO BMW. Alex "HyperM3" Demsky 97 S/C M3

Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2002 08:02:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Gary Brauch <gjbrauch@yahoo.com> Subject: BFG R1's For Sale I have a set of four BFG R1's (245/40x18, 265/35x18) for sale after having run them in six autocross events this year in my E46 M3 (stock wheel size), about 18 minutes of running time. One of the rears picked up a very small (pinhole) puncture and was properly patched, not plugged, now holds air perfectly. Will sell for $200 for the set, plus shipping from SF Bay area. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Y! The wife had some quality stuff left over from a car we sold, which included a box like you mention. Ditched that thing and got the jl audio stealthboxes. I also replaced the stock amp and added another amp (sorry, can't give you names or specs or whatnot - didn't look, but was told they were quality). The head unit is eclipse, and the in dash 6 disk changer doesn't fit in the m3 so it was mounted in the trunk (eclipse as well). The eclipse has a green display, which at night does not look too trick in the M3. C'est la vie. Regarding the sound, it's awesome. The bass is exactly what you're looking for. It can be somewhat thumping if you want it, but turn it down and it adds that extra something that the stock system lacks (note, I didn't have the HK system). I kept the original speakers (I hear that some crossover work was needed, I don't know what them things is, so I can't address that), and the sound is definitely crisp. Also, I was told that I needed a larger (more outputs?) amp than one of the ones I supplied in order to allow for front / rear fading. This has proved to be important for adjusting the sound to be exactly the levels I want between the bass, mid ranges, and tweeters. I think that's it. I can provide more specifics if you want. Good luck! The installer had an opening, so I took it after checking that the removal of the stealthboxes wouldn't be too much of a PITA. In my limited driving since getting the stereo I've found that the higher volume completely eliminates any slight suspension noises. I'm not going to keep my head in the sand for too long, but for now ignorance is bliss. But, I've been the victim of this, so don't be so sure :-) I failed to fully tighten the gas cap one time and got the code. It could also be that the seal on the cap isn't sealing properly. So check it for tightness, and then maybe try a new cap. That's all I've got. Cheers, Jim Bassett

#8. rear of car leaning to one side - why? - from Chris Papademetrious

Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2002 21:16:49 -0400 From: Chris Papademetrious <chrispy@ieee.org> Subject: rear of car leaning to one side - why? I'm hoping some fellow list members can help me noodle this one out. About six months ago, I noticed that I had slightly more tire clearance in one rear wheel well than the other - maybe 1/4" difference. I didn't think much of it, because this slight lean was towards the passenger side, and I figured that the driver's weight would even it back out. Besides, the difference was extremely slight. Walking back to my car in the parking lot the other day, I noticed the rear of the car was leaning to the right much more significantly than before. I measured the difference out at 5/8" - very obvious from the rear of the car now. The car is my daily driver, and drives fine with no strange clunks or noises. I guess it's time to get dirty The car has Bilsteins and H+R OEM springs, and Ground Control RSMs. What's the first step in diagnosing this? Back when I noticed the slight lean six months ago, I swapped the rear shock columns (RSM and all) and the lean stayed on the passenger side. I didn't see any sheet metal damage where the RSMs rest against the body. Should I pull 'em out and swap columns again? Have springs been known to weaken? Are there any other rear suspension components (failed bushings, etc.) that could affect the settling height of the rear suspension? Thanks in advance, - Chris

Then drive the car around the block and repeat measuremeant. If it is still off, swap shocks. If it stays to one side, then it sounds like you have a sagging spring. Swap springs to verify that. While the bushings may wear, they probably are not affecting ride height. From your data so far, it sounds like a spring issue. In theory, springs shouldn't fail; however, in practice, they can sag. If you want to find out, you can always swap springs left to right. If that doesn't work, you might want closely examine the rear suspension components. Perhaps something is bent. Also, do you have an aftermarket exhaust? Could the swap bar be pressing against the pipes causing that side to stay a bit high?
