#2. Mid-Ohio (was Thanks, and a General Audio Question) - from Dorffer, Rich

Date: Mon, 28 Oct 2002 17:14:36 -0500 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Mid-Ohio (was Thanks, and a General Audio Question) unimportant items snipped.... Shane says > > I was at the Buckeye > school/club race this weekend at Mid Ohio. I was able to > get to the morning warm up for some much needed > track time since I missed all my track time on Friday (never been to Mid > Ohio before). Anyway, I took 3rd in class (out of 7) Saturday and 2nd Sunday. Congratulations and not too shabby for your first time at a very technical track with minimal practice, tough conditions and the large turn-out of club racers for the event (pretty crowded starts and track in general). It was definitely a weekend where smooth and consistent made a difference (cold and/or wet). If you had your car sorted, I imagine first would have been a possibility so you will have to come back to Mid-Ohio again to prove me right :-) Mel Myers (another lister) was also quite fast on Sunday with his primarily competition setting a new lap record in H Stock. Alas, Mel had an off in the Enduro and DNF but he is quite the racer too as he was challenging the leader in H Stock. Anyone care to donate a new front splitter or radiator to Mel can contact him directly at melmyers76@netscape.net :-) Pierre Collet in B Mod won both the Enduro and the Sprint Race. His E36 M3 pulls like no other and he is very fast. Too bad Stickley wasn't there as it is really fun to see those guys battle along with Larry Wright. The best thing about BMW CCA club racing is all the camaraderie. Some of the most fierce competitors on the track are sharing garages in the pits and swapping lies off track. I have left out my commentary on all of the non E36 M3 race content. The driving school was also quite fun and Mid-Ohio is a great track (if you can overlook the uncontrollable weather this weekend). I also got to meet some of our best listers and reacquaint myself with others while there including Neil Maller (I need to probably bug him for a ride next time), Gerald Low (who was my instructor...thanks Gerry...and was very patient with me as I continued to try to learn a few things and took me out in his very quick Euro E36 M3 for some smooth/fast laps on the track), Mel Myers, Kurt Resener as well as others. Also, you should see Gerry's harnesses....I think it took me fifteen minutes to get buckled up. My body didn't move but my head kept banging off the roof/sunroof :-) Must be those weak neck muscles and that big head of mine. Best regards, Rich - slowly improving 95 M3 90 325is PS - still tired from the weekend but would do it again in a minute. Like Gerry said, I need to try some other tracks. When I talked to my wife later that night, I made sure to throw that in there as feedback from Gerry. Her response "so, how far is Mosport or Mont Tremblant from Toronto". Not far I said :-) Just getting ready for next year (prepping the wife, car prep continues in the winter).

#3. Koni's with Stock Springs - from Dave Kelley

Like an idiot, I installed them full stiff! What a mistake! I was at a Drivers School at Carolina Motorsports Park last weekend and I felt like I was dirt tracking. The rear end would not stick. But it sure was fun! Even with the fronts shocks set full stiff, I could not even get close to getting rid of the oversteer. So, I am going to be changing my suspension over the winter anyway (probably Ground Control coilovers since this car is practically turning into a dedicated track car) and will put in my usual plug for selling my almost new Koni SA's including the full front struts/springs with the Koni inserts. But I may run a little longer with these Koni SA's and am going to back off the rears at least a full turn to soften them up and see if I can't keep this thing on the ground. Just curious, though, along with Scott as to what strut/shock settings others have used with stock springs for track use! Dave Kelley 98 M3/4 94 325i

Dave, FWIW, I ran rear SA Konis at 3/4 turn from full soft. Front anywhere from 1/2 to 1.5 turns from full soft. To be honest I could not tell a lot of difference between 0.5 and 1.5 turn front Koni SA settings. At least not the way I drive. Just for kicks I cracked the rears up to full stiff and the car did start to oversteer to could only be negated by stiffening up the front. That was fun, but I went slower as a result ;-) The comfort level of the car on the road is hardly effected by even the most extreme rebound setting changes. I guess you would need Koni DAs with adjustable compression to really soften up the ride to stock Boge level. The above impressions were gathered on 235/40-17 RA1s (street and track) and Eibach sway bars set at full stiff/half stiff front/rear. The car was neutral and reasonably well behaved. Once I installed H&R sport/race springs (front/rear), the SA Koni's had to be cranked way up. More so in the back. alex f '95 M3 with TC's raceline kit

#7. Stereo upgrade to be installed soon!! - from Scott McClung

Date: Mon, 28 Oct 2002 17:17:10 -0800 From: Scott McClung <scott.mcclung@ubicom.com> Subject: Stereo upgrade to be installed soon!! I just ordered a system from a local installer for my '98 M3. I've had it for 6 months and it's finally time to put a decent stereo in the car, so the audio experience matches the driving experience. HK is not so great, IMHO. My previous driver was a '94 Q45t with a very nice stereo, so I've been missing fidelity in my life. (still have the Q, but wife drives it now) What I'm getting: - Alpine deck - MB Quartz component front speakers - JL Audio Stealth boxes made for the car w/ 8" subs http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/3series.html - Alpine 4x50 amp for front speakers - RF Punch Power 500 for subs (taking out of the Q) No rear fills, but I really didn't want to cut a hole in the rear deck of this car to add a sub in addition to maintaining rear deck speakers. I also don't want to lose any trunk space, and the JL stealth boxes take very little room away from the trunk. Should sound decent. I'll be selling the 6-disc BMW changer if anybody is looking for a factory unit. I'll keep the HK system in case I ever want to put the car back to stock. I'm really looking forward to having decent tunes in my daily driver - that is the one thing I have missed about the Q. The Q will lose it's big sub box - wife wants the whole trunk, go figure!!
