#2. E36M3 Rolling Fenders - Advice needed - from Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com

Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 08:20:18 -0500 From: Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com Subject: E36M3 Rolling Fenders - Advice needed Hi everyone, Well, I just installed stock tires sized S03s (225/45, 245/40) on my '98 M3 with a Dinan Stage 1 suspension (with stock wheels) and the rear driver's side is just rubbing about a 2" section of the fender lip. (It makes kind of loud noises when cornering hard though, and that's how I noticed it was rubbing.) Should I use: 1) the handle of wooden bat to slightly roll this section 2) tap it with a heavy rubber mallet (dead blow hammer) Thanks! Colin

I got it at the local home improvement store. You might also want to have your rear alignment checked. Seems ood to me that stock size tires on stock wheels would rub. Even if the car is lowered some. The S03s may be a little wider. #4.Door chime gremlin - from marc@plante.com

Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 06:00:26 -0800 (PST) From: marc@plante.com Subject: <E36>Door chime gremlin In a 1997 E36 M3/4, there's a problem with the door chime periodically chiming for no reason. Symptoms: Start and run car, then shut down, remove key and open door. CHIME. shut the door and reopen it, and everything is fine. I thought it was a problem with the headlight switch, but it can happen during the day when the light switch has not been touched. I'm assuming that BMW did away with the light buzzer vs. ignition key chime in the later E36s. The ignition key cylinder has been replaced on this car. is there a key sensor wire that might be loose? Any thoughts? Thanks, Marc Plante E36 325i, 207k (SOs E36 M3/4 41k)

"Well duh, Chester...it's the factory size...so therefore it must fit." The lowering of the car certainly doesn't help. There is an inner liner under there and I think it rubs on this...unless you can clearly see paint missing... #7. Stereo upgrade to be installed soon - from Paul Elliott

I think youll see a nice improvement. Only, most of us have found that going with an aftermarket head unit relegates the radio function as often unlistenable with many of our favorite stations! Its because the dynamic antenna in the C pillar has no hookup on aftermarket head units. I dont know if Alpine is different, but most of them, even if the quality of the HU is vastly better, you wont get to hear it because of the degraded reception. Ive found that Blaupunkt, somehow, provides quite good reception despite the lack of the dynamic antenna hookup. Let us know how you make out. BTW, you wont miss rear fill at all. Ive got the stealtboxes too, and if your front speakers are decent, which your MB quartz certainly are, they will provide all the staging you need, and the subs should provide the bass for you. BTW, you can also use the stealths to provide fill instead, as they can play mid ranges fine. But dont use them for that...Use them for bass, and bridge them for extra punch. They'll play in mono when bridged, but who cares; its sub bass!! Factory radios are designed to pull in a very wide range signal, eg. one that isn't very good and doesn't provide stereo separation, etc. The logic is that manufacturers don't want buyers saying they can't get reception. Aftermarket decks are designed for better performance. Therefore, they reject a signal that isn't strong enough to provide good stereo. Users see this as an inferior tuner. Dual diversity antennas are good things. But, certainly aren't mandatory to get good reception. Jay

But, certainly aren't mandatory > to get good reception. Thanks Jay for explaining this. I had always cursed my Kenwood Excelon head unit for not having a connection for the diversity antenna in the C pillar, as I thought this was the reason my reception on favorite stations was not as good as the lousy stock head unit. > Aftermarket decks are designed for better performance. Therefore, they > reject a signal that isn't strong enough to provide good stereo. Users see > this as an inferior tuner. The stations it does get static free sound so much better than with the stock head unit. Unfortunately, my favorite station now has more static than I would like, but on those days or in those areas where its static free, the quality is way better. I'll stop blaming it on the lack of a diversity connector... The tip off to me should have been my friend's Blaupunkt. He pulls in my station with zero static, and with, of course, quality equal to or better than mine, without using a diversity connection either. I guess the only thing I could do if it were important enough, would be to replace my HU with a Blaupunkt. But, then Id have to replace my 6 CD changer as well.
