I think the main confusion of the stealthboxes fitting or not has to be JL Audio's confusion over the differences between E46 and E36. Different years of introduction...when was the E46 introduced, when did the 2 door E36 stop production, etc. Basically, they are a bunch of idiots when it comes to car knowledge...and they should be because they are in the business of selling car audio equipment. There is no reason why the stealthboxes will fit a '97 sedan and not a '98, etc. BMW will not drastically change sheet metal from year to year...especially not in that area. Maybe different amp and so it'll interfere? So what...who cares? Rip that POS out anyway! =) Anyway, I coordinated a group purchase on stealthboxes a long time ago..when it was safe to do so :o) I sold them to sedan owners and coupe owners alike. If anyone has a sedan and wants to test fitment...I have a pair sitting in my garage waiting for reinstallation or the old toss. Heck, I should have test fitted them onto Dave Ngo's sedan just for fun... I'm no audiophile but I think they sound great. Much better than the stock (non-HK) system. At least they are able to drown out the UUC exhaust on long freeway trips :^) jeff 98 M3/4 -------------------- 14 -------------------- > Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 09:30:20 -0800 > From: Scott McClung <scott.mcclung@ubicom.com> > Subject: RE: Stereo upgrade to be installed soon!! > > > Well, it also says they won't fit a '99 - and I've heard they fit OK in a > '99. > I'll find out next week - I'm betting the installer can make them work - > he didn't mention anything about them not working in certain cars, and > they are a JL dealer. > > Scott >

#5. Help: Rear Strut Tower Brace Install - from Riley, Scott
Top
Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 14:27:55 -0600 From: "Riley, Scott" <sriley@cardinalcapital.com> Subject: Help: Rear Strut Tower Brace Install I recently purchased one of JTD's new rear strut tower braces (STB) which is beautiful BTW. Unfortunately, it did not come with any instructions. Has anyone on the list ever installed a rear STB? I have the Motorsport front STB on my '95 M3 which is simple to install (cliff notes: raise car, remove strut bolts, install brace, re-install and torque strut bolts, lower car). However, the rear STB seems more difficult in theory given the rear shock mounts (for the record, I have Ground Control RSMs). I would appreciate any do's/don'ts, torque specs, etc. TIA, Scott

#7. new transmission - from Paul Elliott

Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 15:43:08 -0500 From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Subject: new transmission I know we're not talking about this, but I just wanted to report the resolution of my situation. The dealer just called me to advise me that they feel the only proper remedy is to replace the transmission, which they will do at no charge, being still 5K miles and 9mos under warranty. He told me that in cases like this, the standard BMW recommendation is to NOT take the transmission apart, but to replace. My faith in bmw has been reaffirmed. The rest of you guys still under warranty. If you have over 35K or 40K miles on your car, I would strongly suggest you check the operation of fifth gear for the first 15 minutes after you start the car up in the morning before its had a chance to warm up. And get it taken care of while its still covered, for clearly, there arent too many repairs which will cost more than this one. So the towers flex outwards and decrease (make more positive) your negative camber?" My thought was to make sure that the strut hats and the STB were seated and lined up as best as possible with the holes in the strut tower. Unloading the car would be the best way to accomplish that. The one time that I did the reinstall, the bolts were not perfecltly lined up with the strut tower holes. If I had installed the STB, it would have relied on the torqueing of the bolts to align everything under load which doesn't sound good. I would be amazed to think that there is so much flex in the strut towers that it affects your camber in a material way. Scott
