#1. Winter tires and storage of summer tires - from Paul Elliott

Date: Mon, 4 Nov 2002 09:55:37 -0500 From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Subject: Winter tires and storage of summer tires >> I always wonder why people get a set of 17" wheels/snow tires and mount up 235-40-17 snow tires. It's like mounting up a set of steamrollers and hoping they work...<< In theory, this might be so. But Im running 8.5x17" contour knockoffs for my winter setup, with Pirelli Winter P210 Asymetricos mounted, and I will tell you that this is a damn effective setup. When it snows, my only problem is if it gets deeper than the front splitter, because I dont like plowing the snow this way. But in terms of winter traction, I havent yet seen an SUV that has anything on me! Sure, 4wd vehicles have the advantage, but my point is between the tracs and the winter tires, its a very good winter driver. May not be as good as your 16" setup, but its far from ineffective! The idea here is that the car can tell whether you're wearing your seatbelt and that affects how rapidly the airbags deploy. Something along those lines at least. Anyway, this sensor goes bad, and the car indicates this by throwing the airbag light. Happened to me, had to get the drivers side seatbelt buckle replaced. Andrej '97 M3

You'll get > comparable performance out of a 16" and 17" snow > tire > in the dry if they're the same tire. I agree that the compound does matter (i.e. original Blizzaks, which were much unloved in the dry for their squirmy feel with the Multicell compound, vs. the new LM-22s.) However, sidewall height and flex can make a significant difference in feel. A 205/55 tire has a sidewall height of ~4.4". A 225/45 tire has a sidewall height of ~4", a 235/40 tire is at 3.7". For the same tire, less sidewall means less flex which gives you better feel. I know it's not quite that simple, but it's significant nonetheless. > But the narrower > tire will give far better inclement weather > traction. Better in deep, loose snow - probably. Better in general, not necessarily. The rule that narrower is better is not one that should be applied universally. > > I have a set of TSW trophy wheels and they easily > clear the outboard side of the front caliper. While I'll admit that Tire Rack is not the be-all, end-all of wheel suppliers, it's certainly more difficult to find 16" wheels that fit than 17" wheels. For example, no 16" BMW OEM wheel will fit our cars. Maybe things have changed since then. Dave __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Thanks. It's really easy -- take tin snips and chop off the whole front of the switch (the part that makes contact with the pedal). It'll then be easy to remove. This probably isn't how the dealer does it, but since you're putting a new one in it doesn't matter. -p

I previously stated that I recently bought some at either Advance or Autozone here in NE Ohio and they are still available. The first part is true, the second part is incorrect. I got the exact same story this weekend at both Advance, Autozone and Pep Boys about the Bosch units after Rex peeked my interest. So, other than the 'trim to fit' refills at BMW dealers, I don't know of anyplace still carrying them today. Best regards, RIch
