Date: Sun, 10 Nov 2002 18:33:04 -0800 From: "Chris Teague" <cteague@cox.net> Subject: Re: [E36M3] How to get more camber? Ahmad, If you swap strut hats on your 98, you should be around 3 degrees. If you use 95 hats, you would be around 2 degrees. Shims/longer bolts are nice to even out camber side to side, but you are correct, you have to watch tire clearance. But you can start with the 95 plates, and add a few shims to get a little more if necessary. On my 97, I currently run the 95 hats, plus shims to even things out. I still want more camber for autox, and really need the adjustability, so I bought a set of tckline camber plates that I will install soon. Plates are easy enough to install, and you can remove them, so I think they are still a good option. Once I install the plates, I will be selling the 95 hats if anyone is interested. As for other options, there is the famous "camber bolt" from BMW that you can really just go to home depot for. but it just adds extra "slop", and has no positive way to lock in the camber, so it could slip around. Then there is the exotic options like custom struts for those who really want to play with the geometry, or custom control arms, etc. But you listed the normal ones. #6. Stone Chip - from Dorffer, Rich

Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2002 09:36:57 -0500 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Stone Chip I got a stone chip last Monday in my E30. Pretty decent sized chip (size of a nickel) near the left edge of the windshield. My insurance company in Ohio does not cover glass separate from comprehensive so you are subject to your deductible but they will fix stone chips (for safety precaution) for free. I had mine fixed the next day and would have been satisfied with the repair (still clearly visible but would have been adequate) had the chip not turned into a 4" crack by the next morning. Anyway, I have yet to put much faith in stone chip repair. YMMV. Regards, Rich 95 M3 90 325is - new windshield hopefully can wait until spring

Yes, that can happen, depending on the exact tire and wheel combo. > 2) Swapping strut hats (I have heard it gives you over -3 deg. camber. Is > that true)? The amount of neg camber you get by swapping the hats depends on how lowered your car is, combined with some car-to-car randomness. My 96 M3 with H&R Sport springs has over 3 deg each side. With stock springs it'd be in the 2.5 deg area. > 3) Using 95 strut hats. This gives around -2 degree camber. Any experiences? I'd guess that to be about right. Unfortunately they would also have the undesirable side-effect of reducing caster. > 4) Any other options? There are the so-called crash bolts for the upper kingpin to strut mounts, which are eccentric and allow tweaking the camber somewhat. However in track use they tend not to hold their settings. I think the reasonable options are: 1) Swap the bearing hats and you get whatever you get, and if that's too much then, 2) Use camber shims. You don't need to get anybody's kit. Stock bolts are M12x1.75x20 (diameter x thread pitch x length) in Grade 10.9. Get the same but in 30mm length, for which you may need to find an industrial fastener house. Don't buy a lesser material grade (lower number). At the same time buy an assortment of hardened (important!) precision ground washers in various thicknesses. It may be easier to find these in 1/2" rather than 12mm, and that'll work just fine. Experiment until you get as much as camber you want but without rubbing. The usual thickness used for camber shims is 4mm or 5/32" (=3.97mm). If that rubs then go down to 1/8" (=3.18mm). If none of the above is to your liking, then camber plates (Ground Control, not K-Macs) are the remaining good option. Neil 96 M3

Be sure to get narrow bodied Torx sockets or you won't be able to get all the head bolts off. I purchased a set of 3 Facom torx sockets from Steve D' in the common BMW sizes before I pulled the head. #10. Sea Foam / Top end cleansing - from Jason Knight
Top
Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2002 17:09:37 -0800 (PST) From: Jason Knight <knight2244@yahoo.com> Subject: Sea Foam / Top end cleansing A friend dropped by this weekend with his Firebird and he and my wife did this procedure where they poured a product called Sea Foam into the gas tank, engine via the oil fill, and somewhere else via a vacuum hose. The friend then drove the car at high rpms around town, and when he returned reported a better response to throttle input and possibly greater power. I have my doubts about this process. And even though I can't claim to have a wide car or engine knowledge base, I am fairly logical. It seems that if this process was proven I would have heard someone mention it in the past 30 years or so. Anyone familiar with this, and know if any benefits to it? Seems like if it was bona fide it would have made its way to this list at least once in the year I've been reading; then again maybe it snuck in between a couple shock discussion emails and I missed it. Thanks! Jason __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? U2 on LAUNCH - Exclusive greatest hits videos http://launch.yahoo.com/u2
