#1. Naming and Bleeding - from Steve Klein
Top
Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 12:04:21 -0600 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: Naming and Bleeding 'Em.' The name came to me in a moment of clarity as it A) fits the car B) is my little sister's name (her b.f. is frothing at the bit to drive it) and C) is a Bond character (I can never remember if it's 'M' or 'Q' who runs the gadget lab). As for bleeding the clutch slave (still fresh in my memory), I did the Bentley routine for bleeding, removing and depressing the plunger, and replacing. The reason given was the need for the bleed nipple to be elevated in relation to the rest of the slave cyl. for proper evacuation of any trapped air bubbles. As a side note, since I had the front on jack stands (properly, of course) when I was pumping the pedal, I couldn't tell when I was actually disengaging the clutch because the pedal pressure felt so light (after pumping the damn thing hundreds of times). I actually bled the system twice, then realized that the only way to be sure was to button it up, lower the front and test it. (I had a friend behind the wheel with the car in 1st as I tried to roll it, first with the pedal up, and then depressed. All was well and the pedal has been solid since).

Two months ago, wrinkle again, and while still under wtty, dealer is most unresponsive. I DO wash my hands. Why the left hand wrinkle and not the right, I rather doubt that a manual shift would make a difference. I think really a manufacturing fault. Anyway, if I have to spring, seems I have seen an e36M3 wheel w/suede wrap (PTG maybe??). Any body w/any info or thoughts re this? Would the replacement have SRS, etc.? many thanks Carl Sewell Charlottesville VA e36 M3/4 CCA 151298

Carl, perhaps the best way around a manufacturing fault is to simply get someone else to wrap it? http://www.american-stitches.com/ I've read on another mailing list that their workmanship is great. - Chris

#7. Bentley Rants - from Ron Buchalski
Top
Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 15:01:58 -0500 From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Bentley Rants To go along with Neil's and Mel's comments: - The E30 Bentley manual was more useful to me than the E36 manual is. The illustrations and photos were much better, and the procedures were more clearly written. - Why did it take Bentley 7+ years to release the E36 manual (1999)? The Z3 manual was out before it! And, they've already released an E46 manual. You'd think that, after taking so much time to produce the manual, it would be top notch. - The BMW Enthusiasts Companion (not 3-series specific) isn't worth the money. Most of the information is now old (The M50 was a new engine when it was released!), so there's nothing in there for the E36 M3. The only reason I refer to it is for a quick reference to a few specific items, like where to connect my handmade Service Indicator reset tool. It lists the pinouts for the old style (pre-1988) and new style connectors. There are also a few service tips that aren't model-specific. Save your money. - The Bosch Fuel Injection and Engine Management Manual is very good, but not BMW-specific. It does a good job of describing how the various fuel injection systems work, and how to troubleshoot them. It doesn't cover too much about Motronic (Bentley sells a separate manual specific to this). I've never removed the clutch slave cylinder on my M3 to bleed it. I did do this on my former E30 318i, but it was much easier to reach the bolts and remove it. The space around the M3's slave cylinder is very tight, so even bleeding it in place isn't that easy. -rb _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

#8. List advertising - from Sue Kraft

Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 14:15:40 -0600 From: Sue Kraft <suekraft@new.rr.com> Subject: List advertising How do y'all feel about advertising on the list? I had a vendor ask this morning if he could run an ad on the list and advertise some prices and specials on various products. Before I make a decision, I'd really appreciate some feedback from listmembers and other vendors as well. The biggest problem here is being fair to all the vendors. If you let one advertise, you have to let them all advertise, and that could open up a big 'ole nasty can of worms. What say ye wise and venerable listmembers? Yay or Nay? Suzy

I don't mind specials or sales being posted. It's helpful to know when we can get good deals on stuff (like the recent radiators on Ebay). However, I think any sort of non-sale/promotional advertising is definitely a bad idea. - Chris

Personally, I liked receiving that special pricing offer on the BBS wheels. That was a helpful message. And if UUC or AA has a new part specifically for our cars, I'd like to know about it ASAP. But I really don't want to be bombed with general sales pitches that I can get on my own. Thanks for asking, Sue!
