Assuming your rattling 328i cat heat shields are like my rattling M3 heat shields, they're crimped around the cat. There's no practical way to re-crimp them, and they're not available as separate parts. In addition there's some heat resistant foam inside the tapered ends which is presumably designed to take up clearance and stop the shields from rattling. Over time the foam degrades and in my case the cats scrape on the ramp going into my garage, and the shields rattle. The best fix I've come up with is to thread some stout stainless steel safety wire though the slots in the end of each shield, then twist the wire to exert pressure to pull the shields toward each other. This seems to work for a while. At least it's cheap and easy. Neil 96 M3

#2. Lug Bolt length with spacers - from Jeff Stowe

Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 12:12:27 -0800 From: Jeff Stowe <jrstowe@pacbell.net> Subject: Lug Bolt length with spacers Does anyone know the length of the stock lug bolts? I am trying out some 5mm H&R spacers and Turner states that 35mm lug bolts are required. Are the stock bolts ok with these spacers? Also, blew up another power steering line this week. Making a full lock turn onto an on-ramp and heard it go POP. This is the second time this has happened. I am sure it is the other factory fitting on the power steering cooling manifold ( when the first fitting blew I re-did the solution using "normal clamps"). If you are still driving around with the factory solution on this part you might want to consider checking the hose conditon and re-inforcing with snake clamps. Due to the situation (late night, little kids in car) I had to drive for about 15 minutes at freeway speed with no fluid. Will this have caused any damage to the pump? thanks, jeff

IIRC, the stock bolts would only have about 3 turns engaged with the spacer. Don't get cheap and risk insufficent lug bolt engagement. If your testing fitting only (not using them on the street), you'll bearly have enough threads. If you wind up using them on the street, get the lugs. I think having advertisers isn't a bad idea provided they don't have access to the list of e-mail addresses and that the content is limited to M3/automotive related products that the list members would be interested in. I like the idea of a seperate e-mail just for the advertisers (not incorporated into a digest) so those that aren't interested can delete it. I don't think this is a bad thing as someone suggested because the people that delete it wouldn't be interested and the vendor shouldn't care about someone that wouldn't be a potential customer deleting it as the e-mail would make it's way to those that would purchase from them. Most advertisers would be lucky to get 1% response from a mass mailing. But being that this is a specialized list, I wouldn't be suprised that the response might be closer to 5%. I've purchased from the vendors that spend time on these lists since they are good guys with great products and I've had great experiences with them (UUC, The Ultimate garage, etc). I wouldn't object to deal on tools as well as parts either as many on this list work on their cars on a regular basis. -Bobby

The clamps on all E36's are prone to leak/fail over time. The only way to fix it is to replace the clamps AND both hoses. If you do one w/o the other, the problem will return. -Bobby ----- Original Message ----- From: <Jeremy.Thissell@USPTO.GOV> > > Hi Guys, <snip> > I have a slow oil leak on my 328i, that I can't trace the source of. In my experience, all the M3 I've driven does not have a smooth cold start idle in the first 10 to 20 sec after a cold start compared to most Japanese car I've driven. But after it's warm up, it settles back into a very steady idle. Joe. '98 M3/4 ---------------------------------- I purchased a '98 M3 sedan last May. The car has always had a rough idle on cold starts. It's never stalled and goes away once driven. Is this just a normal condition with the OBDII cars? Are there any common problems that result in this type behavior? The car has the JC Shark software, ITG intake and Supersprint exhaust.
