I don't even remember if I posted this but 2 weeks and one day ago (exactly 1 week after I picked up my car), my E46M3 was broken into on the streets of NYC right by my apartment. They busted the door lock and stole my V1, gloves and foam bumper guards that I use in the garage. I was only parking for a short time and I didn't feel like making the trek to the garage so I figured it would be safe in my neighborhood. I got a new V1, replaced the lock, installed the BMW alarm, had it activated and felt a little better. Until 5:40pm today. I went outside of my office in NJ (a nice section too) and there was my passenger side window, sitting on the ground next to the car. This time they only damaged the driver's side lock and couldn't get it open so they broke the window. They stole nothing - not even my new V1. Apparently they are after something in the manuals because the glove compartment was open. My guess is that many people leave the plastic emergency key in the glove compartment and they were looking for that to drive the car away. The manual was in my apartment because of the last break-in (I didn't want the nice leather case stolen) and I don't even have the plastic key. I can't believe that I don't even have my license plates yet and my car has been broken into twice! Is it because it stands out like a sore thumb with the Phoenix Yellow paint? Has anyone else heard of break-ins on E46M3's? Anyway, if this happens again, I will seriously consider selling it and picking up another E36M3. Maybe I should keep those spare parts a little bit longer now.... -Wayne '01 E46M3 Phoenix Yellow/Black with no window and a damaged lock P.S. I already have the blank lock replacement but it hasn't been painted yet so it isn't on the car. #3. Airbag light and power door locks - from Alain van der Heide

Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 22:14:35 -0600 From: "Alain van der Heide" <ajvdh1@attbi.com> Subject: Airbag light and power door locks I've had two things start going wrong on my '95 coupe at the same time: The airbag light stays on for about 2 minutes when I start the car, and the power door locks/trunk lock stopped working. What's odd, is that recently I had a bung welded into my exhaust system so that a local tuner shop could hook their wideband O2 sensor up when we did a dyno run (270 at the wheels, over 220 ft/lbs from 2300 to 5000, some tuning issues, but I digress), and the symptoms popped up later that same day. Now, I've had the problem with the light before, and it turned out to be the classic "a passenger must have kicked the seatbelt sensor", 'cause after a reset, all was OK. So my plan there is to have Bimmerhaus read the codes. The door lock is a problem I haven't seen before. When I try to use the power locks it consistently blows fuse #35, a 25 amp one. Near as I can figure from the wiring diagram in the Bentley manual, that's the main power lead for the locks. It goes to the body control computer, from there it's distributed to the lock motors when the lock button is pressed/key is turned. I could have the shop look at it, but tracing down stuff like that can get expen$ive. So, I figure I'll start by checking the lock motors one at a time. If they're OK, I'll have to trace down a potenial fault in the wiring harness. Ugh. I am a little suspicious that both problems cropped up at the same time. Anybody have some words of wisdom?

I found a local custom exhaust place that MIG welded them in place for me, then rust-proofed the welds with paint. The dealer was going to weld them for me as well, but the ran out of N2 for their MIG welder. I do agree with everyone that I get what I deserve for parking a Phoenix Yellow M3 the street near my apartment rather than in the garage but I still don't have to think it's fair - I didn't do anything to the people doing this. My office parking lot is a different story - I have no other option. There are no garages and no secure places to keep it. It is in a nice area and my boss has a black M5 (and before that a Techno Violet M3) and has no trouble. There's even a Ferrari 348 in the same parking lot. For those curious, my black E36M3 was also broken into near my apartment too and that was almost the same thing - they stole my manuals and spare tire. -Wayne

They are easily the worst tire I've used yet (including RE730s and some others I can't remember right now). But, for ~$60 each they are also 1/2 the price of anything else I've used. Honestly, it's kinda fun to smoke them from a rolling start. I could only do that with the 730's when it was cold (< 50) outside. Anyway, they aren't very grippy but they are somewhat quiet at least. The 730's were cupping badly and got very loud. IMO, those were defective tires. So far the Yokos seem to be wearing pretty well despite the abuse. If you're looking for a beater tire to take you around town then the Yokos work just fine. -Matt __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
