Yes, they take ATF (as nearly all BMWs do I believe) as opposed to typical power steering fluid. Check your manual for exact specifications. Regards, Rich

Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 07:41:02 -0800 (PST) From: marc@plante.com Subject: RE: AVSIs I'll chime in and beat the dead horse, cause I've always been a strong proponent of the AVSIs, but didn't have a good basis of comparison until recently. I've been using AVSI's for years on both my old integra and my new (208k) 325i for both street and track usage. In the dry, they are very grippy...I didn't lose much time to A run group peers on R compound rubber at Summit Point. In the wet, they're not nearly as good as some of their more modern counterparts (Bridgestone, Toyo, Etc) I ran a set of Toyo T1-s recently on my car that were more stable in the rain, and my roommate runs the t1-s's on his E36, so we can swap back and forth to compare real time. The AVSI's aren't hazerdous in the wet, but you do have to pay close attention if you're used to more modern tires on your car. I personally like the semi skid-pad ride. Others may opt for more assurance. Marc Plante E36 325i, 208k Vienna, VA

Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 08:22:33 -0800 From: racebro@santacruzbicycles.com Subject: RE: Cars not used for a month David, After careful thought and consideration, I think that you should give me your keys and your address and I'll take care of them. That way you can maximize your vacation and relax as much as possible, knowing that your cars won't be rotting away in your garage, but instead be experiencing the wonderful joys of being driven. No possiblity of dead batteries either, as the cars will be driven daily. No, really don't thank me-- I do what I can for my fellow man (and list members). :) Jason Lombard Santa Cruz Bicycles, Inc. Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 11:58:54 -0500 From: Jeremy.Thissell@USPTO.GOV Subject: RE: Cat. Rattle Thanks. I got another suggestion of wedging some screws in there. The important thing is, I know the problem is known, and that it just needs a little jerry-rigging to quiet down the shields. I'll let you know if I come up with a novel fix. Neil Maller Wrote: "The best fix I've come up with is to thread some stout stainless steel safety wire though the slots in the end of each shield, then twist the wire to exert pressure to pull the shields toward each other. This seems to work for a while. At least it's cheap and easy. Neil 96 M3"

Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 12:02:53 -0500 From: Jeremy.Thissell@USPTO.GOV Subject: RE: Oil Leak Thanks. I'll check it out. I thought it was motor oil, but maybe it's just power steering fluid that's dirty from running down dusty engine components and collecting on the dirty undercarriage. I'll have to examine it a bit more carefully. Thanks, -Jeremy Robert Chay wrote: "Sounds like the oil leak is your power steering hose. The clamps on all E36's are prone to leak/fail over time. The only way to fix it is to replace the clamps AND both hoses. If you do one w/o the other, the problem will return. -Bobby"

Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 11:19:59 -0800 From: Bob Vaughn <Bob_Vaughn@Telestream.net> Subject: RE: Want to Swap: Armrest-less Center Console Wanted It's been a long time since I swapped my center console for one with an armrest but I think I remember cutting out a piece of carpet (per the instructions) since the console with the armrest is bigger. Before you go to far, you might check to see if you're going to end up with a hole in your carpet that will be visible with an armrestless console. You don't mention what year yours is so YMMV on newer models. -- Bob '95 M3 >I have a black center console in my M3 with an armrest. What's the consensus on the permanent fix for this?? TIA, Cod

Also, you might consider a high-temp ATF if you track the car. It may help reduce the possibility of boiling the p/s fluid. (I use Red Line High-Temp ATF, FWIW.) Cheers, Jim Bassett
