Neil, many thanks for the great info. I recently purchased a set of lines from BMP, and would like to put them on the car myself. My fear is that the existing factory hoses on my 95 M3 (130k miles) are pretty happy where they are. I was going to tilt the odds in my favor by putting the car up in the air, and soaking all the fittings with PB Blaster a few times a day over the course of a few days. That Clench-Wrench looks pretty trick! I'll be picking that kit up. Will this thing get into the fittings when changing out the hoses on the car? I had a quick look under the car the other day, and it appears that I may only have room for a flare nut wrench in some locations. :( (The previous poster appears to be removing the fittings off-car while replacing a section of hard line.) Any other tips for getting these lines off a high mileage New England car? Or is it just a matter of getting under there and seeing if I'm lucky? :) Thanks in advance for your suggestions. - Chris

If anyone has had this replaced, please give me an estimate on labor and parts costs. I've got an estimate and I want to make sure it's reasonable. The VANOS cam gear is approx $45. The VANOS sprocket is approx $32. Chain tensioners are about $100 for both. Now, of course it depends on what they will actually do and replace. I can see most places just replacing the adjustment unit. Replacing the cam gear insert requires removal of the cam or you risk damaging it. Done right to replace all those parts, I would estimate a competent mechanic 3 - 4 hours. Factor in another hour to check for proper operation, but then again, not sure if they would do this either. The alternative is to do this yourself :) Chester --- Jonathan Evans <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> wrote: > Date: Wed, 27 Nov 2002 15:59:34 +0000 > From: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> > Subject: VANOS replacement cost > > Bad rattle at 1200rpm and metal shavings on the valve cover indicate a > quickly disentigrating VANOS system. > > If anyone has had this replaced, please give me an estimate on labor and > parts costs. Beat a well driven 98 M3 by a good two seconds and the M3 was on r-compound tires! Very impressive. Will be test driving a track version Z on Friday, just for the fun of it. Will write a short comparo afterward. Happy Thanksgiving to all. Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe (who might like a Z friend in the garage) Philly Region SCCA AS Champion '97 & '00 BSP Champion '01 & '02

#8. shark injector question - from Mdriver13@aol.com
Top
Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2002 08:09:31 EST From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: shark injector question Still looking for an answer to the question below. "I've got to believe the shark program is always in the injector unit waiting to be downloaded! Right?! Just because, if you forget which program you installed last and if you reinstall the stock program over the stock, then you would be placing the stock program back into the injector and loss the upgrade program. Jim C. had to be smarter then this...if only for accidental mishaps like this. Jim C. please tell me I'm right. The shark program cannot be compromised in the injector, right?" #9. Guibos and exhaust ?'s - from HYPERM3@aol.com
Top
Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2002 12:48:51 EST From: HYPERM3@aol.com Subject: Guibos and exhaust ?'s Hy all, OK, so I was under the car today doing a routine tightening and noticed two things. One, would a dent about a half inch deep and 2 inches long in the exhaust pipe make a difference to airflow? Two, I noticed some cracks around the bolts in my guibo joint. Is this something I can change myself or do I have to take it to the dealership? Has anyone changed it before? Doesn't look too hard. I know there were some previous posts about guibos, but I didn't read them (sorry). Any responses would be helpful, Alex "HyperM3" Demsky 97 S/C M3

Can someone enlighten me on what the generally accepted power losses are in motors, trannies, driveshafts (if applicable), differentials and axles/halfshafts (if applicable)? If you need to be specific, choose the E36 M3. Also, where can I find a hp/tq plot for a stock E36 M3? Thanks, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com
