Any idea what it would be worth? I am in Canada, is it possible to import to the US? (I could be relocating next year) Thanks, Al.

Obviously, your single color version isn't the real deal so you get what you pay for. Expect to pay around $250 direct from PTG for the real ones. Enhancements like suspension and cage will increase the price. What is the number of the car? I keep a record of many of the Euros in Canada. So how much for parts > (average)? How much in labor (time & money). This job is so straightforward that I really don't much remember how long it took for us to do it on a friend's 325i a couple of years ago. My guess for a dealer is not too much over 1 hour. The thermostat cost is fairly nominal - maybe $15-20? - and then there's the BMW antifreeze for which a dealer may charge something like $15/gallon. The thermostat housing is plastic, and a popular "upgrade" is to use the metal version, widely available for about $35-40, including gasket. I'm not sure why this is considered an upgrade, since I've never read a report of the plastic housing actually failing. Maybe yours is the one? Nonetheless, if it does need to be replaced, you might as well use the metal one. Steve D'G has them. Neil 96 M3

#6. ABS Control Unit ?s - from eevans@planetc.com
Top
Date: Mon, 02 Dec 2002 11:43:59 -0500 From: eevans@planetc.com Subject: ABS Control Unit ?s Gruppe, My '95 M3 has been diagnosed w/ a faulty ABS control unit. The dealer read the codes and it says that I have a faulty valve that controls the left rear wheel, thus making the ABS unit shut down and light up. My cost for a unit is $950, plus either my or the dealer's labor. Has anyone out there had the same problem and what did it cost you to fix it? How difficult is it to replace? Is it a job for a mediocre mechanic or best left to the dealer so I can go back to them when it shows a fault again? TIA Evan President Smoky Mountain Chapter

#9. results: S02s on the front / S03s on the rear - from Zack Steinkamp

Date: Mon, 2 Dec 2002 09:43:36 -0800 (PST) From: Zack Steinkamp <edsarkiss@yahoo.com> Subject: results: S02s on the front / S03s on the rear partially based on the feedback i got from the list, i decided to go ahead and replace my worn out rear S02s with S03s, leaving the healthy S02s on the front. i ordered the tires from tirerack.com and had them shipped to Custom Alignment in mountain view for installation (a VERY good process, IMHO). they aligned all four corners a couple of months ago after i installed the H&R Coilovers and RD sways. this time, i had them balance all four wheel/tires, even though only the rears were being replaced. when i picked the car up they had me initial a clause on the invoice saying that i realized that the handling characteristics of the car may be different. this was definitely the case. it feels really twitchy on the freeway and around corners. i drove down 17 to santa cruz over the weekend and found myself steering much more than i usually do (i can drive 17 with my eyes closed -- not that i would ;-). maybe i'm just thinking about it too much, but it just seems that the tires have signifigantly different characters. the difference in the "adhesion curve" (something i just made up) is noticable. the absolute limits are nearly the same, but getting there is different. does that make sense? the verdict: i'll be ordering S03s for the front too as soon as escrow closes on our new house. ;-) fyi, just in case any of you are in a similar situation, which i'm guessing will be the case since the S02s are no longer available thru normal channels. -zs ps ... custom alignment really nailed the balance. there is ZERO vibration in the steering wheel, on up into triple digits.

#10. Re: E36M3 (thermostat) - from Ron Buchalski

Date: Mon, 02 Dec 2002 13:53:10 -0500 From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: E36M3 (thermostat) What problem is the car having? Or, did the dealer recommend the thermostat replacement as "a preventive measure"? (hahaha) Unless you're having a problem with overheating or 'underwarming', there's nothing wrong with the thermostat. The thermostat and gasket will cost around $20. The thermostat housing (cover) isn't a required item for replacement, unless it's damaged. If you ARE going to replace the housing, replace it with the aftermarket aluminum housing. The factory housing is plastic. The aluminum housing runs around $40 (from BMP), although I've seen it sold for as little as $22 (Eurasian?). Since the coolant must be drained to replace these components, expect to pay $15 for a gallon of BMW coolant, and 3 hours labor for coolant drain/refill, and the replacement of the thermostat. The radiator shroud, fan (fan clutch), and drive belts must be removed to reach the thermostat. This would be a good time to have the belts replaced. But seriously, unless you're having overheating problems, or the temp stays in the low range, you don't need to replace the thermostat.
