Date: Sat, 7 Dec 2002 09:49:16 -0600 From: "Mike McCune" <mikem@suds.org> Subject: Chugging at idle Hey all, have question about my 95lux: When I'm idling at a light and the AC is turned on, it seems that each time the compressor kicks in, the idle drops about 100rpm and returns back to normal. I've noticed now that its cold, and I have the defrost on, the compressor seems to cycle on and off more often than in the summer (I imagine its because its just trying to dry the air out, vs in the summer trying to dry and cool the air). Is this indicative of some sort of problem? The headlights lights tend to even dim a bit when this occurs so it seems a bit out of the ordinary. Mike 95 M3 94 525iT

As you know I recently started MPact Motorsports selling high performance and racing brake pads and kits. I am working with a top brake pad manufacturer in developing a new set of racing brake pads. I am looking for two experienced drivers with e36 M3s with stock brakes to help me test some new racing compounds. The profile I am looking for is below. If you are interested contact me immediately. Tester Profile: 1. Must have significant track experience with e36 M3 2. Must have experience with several race compound pads 3. Must have a track event in the next few weeks (preferably in No. California) 4. Must like free stuff ;) 5. Must be willing to help with detailed evaluation of prototype compound evaluation 6. #5. Best price on clutch kit? - from Seth Frader-Thompson

Date: Sun, 8 Dec 2002 13:29:31 -0500 From: "Seth Frader-Thompson" <fraderth@colorado.edu> Subject: Best price on clutch kit? Bimmerworld wants $279, Zygmunt $241, Ultimate Garage $290. Someone says $229 at Eurasian in the archives. The Bimmerworld kit says "throw-out bearing, clutch disc, and pressure plate." Ultimate Garage says "pressure plate, release bearing, disk, pilot bearing, pivot pin, Grade 12.9 pressure plate bolts and clutch alignment tool". Zygmunt just says it's a Sachs kit. I assume Bimmerworld, Eurasian, and Zygmunt are the same kit. Is the UG package worth the extra money? We're going in there because the throwout bearing's shot, so I want to make sure everything else that might be affected gets replaced. Thanks, Seth

The pivot pin and pressure plate bolts are pretty cheap from the dealer. The pivot pin doesn't really wear nor does the clip holding the release fork. The pressure plate bolts aren't the one-time microencapsulated bolts, so they can be reused. The only thing you really need is a clutch alignment tool. Not sure how much they are, but probably around $15. How many miles on the car? I would replace the pilot bearing...might as well since you're already in there. The RD bars use a balance more akin to stock than the UUC bars. RD's bars eliminate body roll, and help contribute to an overall neutral car. After driving on Dinan bars for quite a while, I grew to really like the almost equal balance front/rear. It makes the car more tail-happy, but I honestly prefer to drive the car a little loose. With the Dinan bars I could easily throttle steer my way through almost all turns. UUC's bars give me the best of both worlds. They're fatter, so will eliminate the body roll, but I'll also be able to set the front full soft and the rear full stiff to get that rotation that I want. -p

Best price I could find at the time (1.5 yrs ago). The kit came with clutch disk, pressure plate, t/o bearing and alignment tool. I would definitely have a new set of pressure plate bolts before you start the job. They're fairly soft and easy to round off. Ask me how I know! I don't think the pilot bearing/bushing or the pivot pin are necessary. Just depends. #9. cracked rear shock tower - from Don Chaney
Top
Date: Sun, 8 Dec 2002 14:40:53 -0600 From: "Don Chaney" <chaneydon@hotmail.com> Subject: cracked rear shock tower Today my right rear RSM ripped through the shock tower. Fortunately it happened a couple blocks from my house so I have the car in the garage. There was very little warning for this failure, a bit of a rattling noise the last couple days and then all of a sudden, something very clearly wrong. I have read up on recent postings about this problem, and it seems that I need the reinforcement plates (2 for each side) welded into the tower. I have some questions: Is it realistic to get a welder to come out and do the work in my garage or should I get the car towed to a shop? If they did it in my garage, would it be as good of a job? Would it be worth putting the assembly together with the plates not welded to drive it to a shop? How many miles? Any recommended shops on the Near North side of Chicago? FWIW: Car is 95 M3 with 73k miles. GC RSMs were installed this spring along with Konis and Eibach swaybars. Springs are stock. Install was done only 5k miles ago and car has only been on track 5 days since then. As noted, I live in Chicago and the roads suck here. Thanks in advance, Don
