I would just remove the shock. Undo the 18 mm bolt at the bottom of the shock. It should come right off if the top is torn loose. You could drive your M3 across the country and back with a missing rear shock. It won't handle right and the rear wheels will hop if you accelerate hard out of a corner but you will not be doing any damage to your car if you drive without the shock. Sorry to hear about your damage. I don't have any recommendation regarding repair shops in Chicago. Makes me wonder how much longer my shock towers will last. I've got a '95 M3 with Bilstein shocks and JTD rear shock mounts so I have been stressing my shock towers as well. Lowell Seaton '95 M3 - 64K miles Dallas, Texas

I'm trying to fit my '95 M3 with a set of fixed-back race seats that a big guy (I'm 6'4", 275) will fit in. I tried a set of Sparco Evo 3's (way too big for the car), and I doubt the Evo 2 will fit in, and I will not fit in an Evo. Anyone have suggestions for big seat that will work? I drove a Z28 at an autocross school that was fitted w/ one and I was quite comfortable. How much 'finesse' is required? I was thinking about doing the same to mount it to the floor, but I also have to put the sliders in since my autocross co-driver is about half my size. No roll cage in my car... #8. Re: Leithauser M3 for sale (was '99 M3 as a race car ...) - from James Clay

Date: Mon, 9 Dec 2002 12:29:50 -0500 From: "James Clay" <james@bimmerworld.com> Subject: Re: Leithauser M3 for sale (was '99 M3 as a race car ...) The key to getting the car to hook up is making sure that if you lift a wheel, it is a front wheel (undriven) and that it is as slight as possible. For a typical E36 ITS suspension, 4 wheels will stay on the ground through 80% of the turns, only very tight, quick turns cause enough weight transfer to lift a wheel. This is intentional so the driver can hammer the curbing in this type of turn without upsetting the balance of the car. This is important in an IT car because the national championship race is at Road Atlanta where you hit the curb hard in 3 and 10a/b and slightly less in the very fast 1, esses, and 12. Our new H/IS suspension tends to keep all 4 on the track even more. We designed this one a little differently. We use a different rollbar and spring setup to allow the front to have both wheels stuck more - the tradeoff is that the inside wheel is on the ground, even in tight turns where you want to attack the curbs. The double adjustable shocks have a very fast compression blowoff to allow similar but slightly reduced curb attacks to make up for this. I am sure if you work hard enough, you can get a wheel to lift, but it isn't the norm anymore... The rules weren't restrictive enough or written in a way to make cheating useless/obvious. How about Spec E30, since we are BMW guys for the most part anyway? > makes spec miata look wonderful IMO > > Mike > -------------------------------------------------------------------- James Clay http://www.bimmerworld.com Engineered BMW Performance Genuine and OEM BMW Parts 540.639.9648 --------------------------------------------------------------------

#10. Leaking Headgasket....HELP!!!! - from Wesley A. Nicolas
Top
Date: Mon, 9 Dec 2002 17:21:35 -0500 From: "Wesley A. Nicolas" <wes@nicolas.org> Subject: Leaking Headgasket....HELP!!!! Just brought my car in to my mechanic ('95 M3 - 125,000 miles)....he noticed the head gasket was leaking in the right rear (passenger?) part of the head.... Has anyone had this same problem? I just came off of a 1400 mile trip at "high" speeds and the coolant level seems to have stayed constant. However, over the last 5,000 or so miles I have noticed a very mild coolant smell outside the engine upon shut down. I know this will require some major work...is there anything I should do while I'm in there and the head is off?? Thanks, Wes '95 M3 - 125,000 miles
