It's something to consider, esp. if you get them checked during Insp 1 and/or 2. During those inspections, you're dropping so much money they are happy to check/replace them...sort of a consumable item like a fuel filter during Insp. 2. I had the E46M3 parts put in my '95 M3...my BMW Service Manager (with whom I have a 8 year relationship and have known since he was a Service Advisor) said they would replace them for my lifetime with the upgraded parts, and not the parts called out for on the Microfiche for the '95 M3. A good deal I think! A good deal for me, although I confess I can't remember what the standard labor hours are for the mount installation...it's on a receipt somewhere. That would be your ongoing cost as they are consumed... With non-BMW shocks, I think you should be able to still get the shock mounts covered...BMW NA Service has a standard "information warranty card" that describes the lifetime warranty on mufflers, shocks, shock mounts, & some other items that escape me (again...these are for parts only, no labor is covered). Sorry, no lifetime warranty though from BMW for radiators, water pumps, or AC Expansion valves! - Skip Neil Maller wrote: > > Date: Wed, 11 Dec 2002 09:46:42 -0500 > From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> > Subject: Re: RSM Life > > on 12/10/02 11:19 PM, The Buch <the_buch@telus.net> wrote: > > > I have had the e46 RSMs with Z3 reinforcement plates for about 35,000mi > > with about 15,000mi subject to the Koni SAs at about 50% rebound > > stiffness. On a trip recently I was fiddling with the passenged one, but couldn't figure out its function. It is to the left of / below the seat belt insert in this pic (depending upon which position your head is in): http://www.jvanhouten.com/bmw/e36/seats/images/P1010010.JPG Any ideas? I believe what you are referring to is the cable that connects to the seat belt tensioner. It's a good idea to disconnect them so they don't go offer when removing the seats. John

A certain >list member who had one big accident and then a totalled car still shows the >title as being clean. LOL! I've heard that as well. Not to mention that CARFAX had a report for my ex-535is that made it nearly impossible to sell. They said that it had been rolled and totaled when it was in pristine condition. Try sorting it out with carfax, they could give a sh!t. I don't trust them, and you shouldn't either. Shane K. A buddy of mine is designing product demos in Flash for Logitech, and he asked me for some in-car track footage to use in a piece. He just sent me a link to download the demo. It's enormous (75MB), so you slow-bandwidth folks need not apply. > http://www.bluepavo.com/MXMice-GM.zip > it's crazy large, but well worth the giggle. Overall it's a neat piece, and it's always cool to see road course video used in the mainstream. Now if I could only take turn 7 at Sears as fast as he ran the footage, I'd be in an ALMS car. ;-) -peterg

#7. Service I , II question - from Scott McClung

Date: Wed, 11 Dec 2002 12:39:28 -0800 From: Scott McClung <scott.mcclung@ubicom.com> Subject: Service I , II question I changed the oil over the weekend, and tried to reset the service lights with my Peake tool. It didn't work after several attempts. It's not the tool - I've used it before on this car without issue. I read a little note in the Peak instruction manual that if the computer switches over to a different service interval, like Service I or Service II there is no way to know it. Could it be the Service I or Service II lights are counting down? The car has 33K miles on it. The last Service I was done at 16K miles, probably two years ago. Is it time for a I? What is done on the Service I, just fluids - trans and diff plus oil? Anything else? I might just do that myself unless I want to use this excuse to have the mechanics look over the car to make sure nothing else is amiss. Probably take it to Dinan if I do that, since their shop is ~1 mile from my office, they are cheaper than the dealer, and knowledgeable on the M cars. If I do it myself, should I just get the factory fluids? I've been using the 5W30 BMW synth oil and BMW filters for the oil changes. BTW - I had the car out on Laguna yesterday, first time on a track for this car. What an awesome track car these things are completely box stock!! I'll send more info on that experience later. I read a little note in the >Peak instruction manual that if the computer switches over >to a different service interval, like Service I or Service II >there is no way to know it. Could it be the Service I or >Service II lights are counting down? AFAIK, there are only 2 types of "services" that the SI lights indicate and that the Peake resets: - Oil Service - Inspection There is no distinction made for Inspection I or II - that's for you to keep track of :-) First question: what do the SI lights say, "Oil Service" or "Inspection"? Second question: which reset did you try to use, "Oil Service" or "Inspection"? The answers to both questions should be the same :-) >The car has 33K miles on it. The last Service I was done >at 16K miles, probably two years ago. Is it time for a I? Again, what do the SI lights say? >What is done on the Service I, just fluids - trans and >diff plus oil? Anything else? Inspection I is essentially an oil change and a bunch of checks - maybe the microfilter change. All of that is listed in your Service and Warranty Manual. >I might just do that myself >unless I want to use this excuse to have the mechanics >look over the car to make sure nothing else is amiss. Not a bad idea. >Probably take it to Dinan if I do that, since their shop >is ~1 mile from my office, they are cheaper than the dealer, Bwahahaha! That's a good one, Scott. (Have you ever been to Dinan? :-)) >If I do it myself, should I just get the factory fluids? >I've been using the 5W30 BMW synth oil and BMW filters for >the oil changes. Poly ones from > BimmerWorld do great. The current RTABs are more durable than those originally fitted to the 95 MY. There's at least a potential problem with the harder poly or rigid uniball type replacements. The attachment locations for the bushing carrier are a known weak point, and can tear out of the body. Using harder bushings will multiply the shock loading. I have to question whether using stiffer bushings is a good idea without first reinforcing the mounting area. While there is a procedure for this, it isn't simple. > Front Control Arm bushings- if you want to stick with OEM, get the 95 > m3 ones that are eccentric and stiffer. Otherwise, get some good poly > ones (BimmerWorld again). However using eccentric FCA bushings on a 96+ MY M3 will also change the front suspension geometry. May be OK if you're doing that knowingly, but not as a universal recommendation. Neil 96 M3

I know I need those "special" bolts and have ordered them from HMS. I searched the unofficial bmw site hoping to find an install writeup, but couldn't find one. If there is one out there, can somebody point me in the right direction? If not, can someone who's installed these email me the directions to do it? The inboard lap belt point sounds a little complicated... -josh ===== Josh Wyte Momentum Motorsports 508-833-3024 After 5 pm EST __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
