#1. FW: [E36M3] ABS Pump - from Jeremy Conners
Top
Date: Thu, 12 Dec 2002 20:49:57 -0500 From: Jeremy Conners <jeremy.conners@comcast.net> Subject: FW: [E36M3] ABS Pump Evan, The brake system on the E36 was manufactured by Continental Teves (formerly ITT Teves) under the trade name ATE (Ah-Tay - Alfred Teves founder). As a hydraulic control unit (the aluminum valve block) design engineer there, I've seen the components that make up the system first hand. Inside the HCU, there are many tiny passages, orifices, check valves and filters. If your brake fluid was really full of gunk as you say, I'm sure one or more of these components are clogged making the unit inoperable. There really is no way for the end user to clean / repair the HCU as the components are clinched into the valve block under high loads. Disassembling the unit would bake reassembly impossible, and therefore the unit is typically serviced by replacement with a new assembly. These are quite expensive as you have discovered. In the mean time, the brake system should work properly minus the ABS. The brake fluid enters the HCU and passes through a Normally-Open Valve on the way to the caliper. The more complicated part of the circuit is only used during ABS operation. This includes most of the check valves, orifices, low pressure accumulators, pumps, lip seal savers, shuttle valves, etc. I would suggest finding another user that has removed their unit for racing purposes. You have a 95 M3, so its the 3-channel, front/rear split controller. You must replace it with another unit made for the 95 M3. Make sure you check the part number and replace with the same or those that supercede that number (a dealer can help here). You might try giving TC Kline a call in OH as he sometimes keeps some of these old parts around in his shop, commonly giving them away if you ask. He's given me a few things in the past year. You could even try Turner or some of the others as well. This unit may be common to all early E36 models, so a salvage yard might help as well. If you do reuse an old unit, ensure that you have a dealer flush the system properly, as the valves need opened and cycled properly to guarantee elimination of the old brake fluid and any trapped air. Good luck and feel free to contact me with any questions. I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability. Jeremy Conners

One of those peanut-shaped bulbs that fit into a holder, like the OBC and instrument cluster bulbs. BMP Design has the 100W H1 Hellas, BTW :-) Cheers, Jim Bassett

You could try without removing it. At the front lower door edge, pull the rubber trim off that goes around the edge of the door. Remove the screw in the center of the hood latch and remove the handle. Pull the kick panel/dead pedal towards the rear of the car and then inwards toward the center of the car. There are two plastic clips that slide into square holes behind the kick panel. #10. ABS Sensor - from Michael Schaublin
Top
Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 09:24:33 -0500 From: "Michael Schaublin" <mike_schaublin@hotmail.com> Subject: ABS Sensor Evan - I think Tom was referring to gunk accumulating on the outside of the sensor. When driving in deep snow, my ABS sometimes stops working because the sensor on the toothed wheel gets packed with snow. Once the temps warm up and the snow melts, the ABS is fine. You may have an accumulation of dirt in one of your sensors. Do a quick visual inspection and cleaning of each sensor before springing for the pump.
