I'm trying to remove my instrument cluster so I can replace the bulb for the fog lite indicator. I have the two torx bolts out and the cluster pulled forward. I can see and get my hands on the 3 wiring connectors, but how the heck do those things unlatch? Also, where exactly does the fog lite bulb go? When I bought the car the lite was burned out. There are several empty spots on the bottom of the cluster for bulbs. What are these for and are bulbs supposed to be in all of them? -josh ===== Josh Wyte Momentum Motorsports 508-833-3024 After 5 pm EST __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Assuming that it's the same as the E30 plugs (haven't had the need to take out the E36 cluster yet), the plugs have a vertical latch in the middle. Raise the latch with a small screw driver and the plug will come out. > Also, where exactly does the fog lite bulb go? When I > bought the car the lite was burned out. Look the front of the cluster to see where the fog light bulb is. alex f

They are for other lights/indicators that don't apply to your car, so no, not all of them should have bulbs. (For example, there's a light having something to do with an automatic transmission - unless you have an auto tranny, there won't be a bulb loaded. Same with rear fog light indicator on US cars.) Cheers, Jim Bassett - BTDT on both cars, numerous times :-)

The stripe is a piece of folded over material IIRC. They are stitched on the ends which helps them to lay flat. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe this is how mine are. Later, Rich

#7. RE: [E36M3] ABS Pump - from Jeremy Conners
Top
Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 16:08:41 -0500 From: Jeremy Conners <jeremy.conners@comcast.net> Subject: RE: [E36M3] ABS Pump Evan, I would not recommend running the pump without the proper lines attached and fluid in the system. By running an open system, you're guaranteed to introduce air into the system and make a mess. The pump cycles and empties the fluid from the Low Pressure Accumulators back to the Master Cylinder. As for just listening to the pump during start-up and waiting for the ABS light to go out, this isn't a sufficient set of criteria to determine if the pump is working properly. The filters and orifices could still be clogged. Also, upon power up, a complete valve cycle might not be done. I will have to check with the software group to understand the spec. for this particular application. Most likely they are not all cycled. Why did the PO remove the unit from the car? Was he removing it for racing purposes? At what mileage? How was the brake system maintained? As for the ABS light, the ABS ECU will run diagnostics at start-up and depending on the result of those diagnostics it will trigger the indicator line high or low. Again, I will have to check with the software group to determine the boot procedure. Jeremy Conners <SNIP> Jeremy, Thanks much. You've really gone beyond the call of duty to help me and I want you to know how rare that is today. As I told you I've located a pump and I should ask seller the same questions about his pump as you have outlined. The last thing I need is an incompatible pump. He the (seller of the pump) told me that I could test the pump by hooking it up to the connector after pulling it off the old one and start the car. He said I will hear if it works or not and the ABS light should go out. My ? is won't any pump that works make a noise upon start up and turn out the ABS light once it's satisfied the computer that it's working? Pardon my ignorance here, but when it comes to electronics I'm in the dark. TIA Evan <SNIP>

Guess I couldn't get enough leverage on them to pop them out. I thought it was on the far left. I only have 1 bulb over there and I was able to pull it with a needle nose plier. However, the bulb looked ok. Anyone with a '95 M3, can you tell me how many bulbs you have on the far left of the cluster? Maybe I'll just replace that one and see what happens... -josh --- Ben Liaw - Rogue Engineering <ben@rogueengineering.com> wrote: > Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 15:28:54 -0500 > From: "Ben Liaw - Rogue Engineering" > <ben@rogueengineering.com> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Need help with instrument > cluster ASAP! > > > > I have the two torx bolts out and the cluster > pulled > > forward. There is no way to tell unless you pull the suckers out. By driving the car, 40-50MPH stomp on the gas in 3rd. If the car pulls to the left of right, chances are your RTB are shot (pulls because of change in toe during accelration). The other, scary way, to find out is to take hard and fast corners. If the car feels loose in the rear, the bushings are shot. I just bought another 98 M3 with 60K miles. Altough the car feels fine, I am changing it with stock 96+ bushings and adding a GC spacer.
