Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 13:06:12 -0500 From: NSimon1111@aol.com Subject: Tranmission rattle How concerned should I be about tranmission rattle when my 99 M Coupe is in neutral? Have to listening for it -- with radio (and kids) off -- to hear it, and it is amplified with increased rpm. It occurs only when car fully warmed up and disappears when clutch engaged (pedal down). Car has stock flywheel, 30,000 miles, and I replaced the "lifetime" fluid with Mobil 1 ATF a couple thousand miles ago. May try Redline -- either ATF or MTL -- or Royal Purple Synchromax to see if that quiets things down. Advice appreciated. TIA. Neil Simon Wash, DC 99 M Coupe

Don't you think the guy already knows that he screwed up? So you never made mistake or poor decisions in your life? Sheeshe! But back to answer the original post. I think if you were in the car while your were parked ther you might have a chance to fight it. But if you were nowhere near the car when the Sheriff showed up then you are pretty much screwed. Joe. ------------ "Michael" <95m3ltw@charter.net>: Are you handicapped? besides just needing a good parking place? Pay up then. That is one of the few laws that actually makes sense and should be enforced 110% and with very steep fines. I have a relative that is handicaped and just watching the crap they go thru to park, ask people to move etc is just beyond belief. And the #1 excuse is always, we were just going to be a minute. Guess what, she usually doesnt have the ability to get out and ask someone to move without taking 15 mins! Drive around the block and then when you need to load something, just stop in the front of the building. Never heard of a cop writing a ticket for that. Unfortuantely, rates/prices are going to vary from place to place (as a point of reference, my mechanic's rate is $80/hour - most SF Bay Are shops are $80-$100). However, IIRC (it's been a while since I've been to a dealer) Inspection I is around $300-$400, and Inspection II $500-$600(?). It was about $100-$200 less at my independent's mechanic for similar service. I have found that generally the independent's are less-expensive than the dealer, do just as good a job, and usually allow you customize the service (bring your own fluids, do this service but not that one, etc.) If you are even minimally mechanically inclined, a large portion of the work you can do yourself. A Bentley manual, some basic tools, fluids, filters, etc, and a day of your time and you can accomplish most of the Inspection services. I'd still recommend having a mechanic perform the "checks" - no substitute for having the car on a lift and an experienced person looking it over. My 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - next up: valve cover gasket & splash shield 1993 325is #44 - still compiling the pre-season "to do" list, ugh :-)

That could probably command a premium price just because of that. There are people out there looking for it. Just make sure you mention it... I for one couldn't find it when I was looking for mine. Nothing but those butt-ugly and boring black interiors... sigh. Juan. #6. Steering wheel vibration - from Jim Bassett
Top
Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 12:12:09 -0800 From: Jim Bassett <jimbassett@attbi.com> Subject: Steering wheel vibration OK, the steering wheel has developed a vibration lately (within the last couple of weeks), much like an out-of-balance tire. I've had the front tires re-balanced - no change. I'm planning on checking the steering wheel-to-column connection for tightness, as well as the column linkage. Any other ideas? P/S pump going bad? Wheel bearings? (If you're not familiar, car has 123K+ miles, recently installed Koni SA struts up front (Oct), UUC swaybars, 8.5" wheels 245/40 SO-3s all around, recently replaced motor mounts (Oct), new-ish steering rack (April 2001) - that's all I can think of that would be related.) Thanks, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 w/non-stock hand massage :-) 1993 325is #44 - vibrations galore :-)

#9. Aftermarket bucket seats for daily driver? - from Patrick Buthmann
Top
Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 22:54:35 -0500 From: "Patrick Buthmann" <patrick@teutonic.ca> Subject: Aftermarket bucket seats for daily driver? Gang, I'm looking for recommendations on aftermarket bucket seats for the = E36 M3. This would be for a heavily tracked car (30 days per year), but = also a daily driver. I'm looking at selling my current E36 325is / = D-Mod race car (this recession is taking it's toll on my multi-car = habit....), but I don't want to entirely give up the support that an = excellent race bucket provides. (Currently OMP Grip). However, I don't really want to get a *pure* race bucket, but rather = a hybrid (perhaps reclining) of some sort. Heated, leather, power etc = are all things I'm not interested in, so just a plain, cloth bucket with = a recliner would be nice. I've never been impressed with Vaders = (leather anyway) on the track, so I'd need something which would allow = me to drive the car without having the steering wheel / knees against = door-panel and centre console *grip of death* when cornering. Has anyone replaced their seats with something that they are = incredibly happy with on both accounts? Thanks, Pat

Just got hit with a $275 fine for parking in a handicap spot and wanted to fight it. While waiting in a torrential rainstorm for my co-workers to load some crap into my 95 M3 (trying to stay on topic), I decide to park in a space close-by since they said they'd be out in "five minutes". Eight minutes later, a sherrif's cruiser blocks the front of my car, he comes out and says "This is a handicap spot & you don't have a placard". Then, he slaps me with a $275 citation. OK, so I was a dumbass to park there...> Sorry Jay, just can't offer sympathy in this case...part of leaning the l= esson is paying the fine. You could have circled around until your friend= s returned. Seen on the windshield of a car parked like you...."I'll trade my parking= space for your legs." Jake
