Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 09:43:57 -0500 From: Paul Smith <pauls@ontario.com> Subject: First Driving school experience Going through archives and being on these type BMW lists for 5+ years, I have seen many suggestions for a first driving scool experience. I now have a '98 M3/4 and will be taking every opportunity to go to these. Now for the question: Should I go to the first school with winter-type tires? I have these and pilots, each on 17 in rims. I have heard that it is not great to start learning in an M3. Will the use of a lower level tire help in any way - for a beginner? Thanks in advance, Paul Smith 1998 M3/4 - stock performance - now on snows:(

I have stock Vader seats, but a friend had the SRDs in his LTW. At 6 feet and 185 lbs I fit them just fine. Recaro and others also make certain seat models in wider sizes. Neil 96 M3

I would not use snow tires as there will be more tread squirm and you'll probably go through the entire tread in a run session or two :) Mount the pilot sports back on and have lots of fun. I believe (but could be wrong) that this is because the snow tires are not made to withstand the heat built up at the track. -Wayne -----Original Message----- From: Paul Smith [mailto:pauls@ontario.com] Sent: Monday, December 23, 2002 9:51 AM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] First Driving school experience Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 09:43:57 -0500 From: Paul Smith <pauls@ontario.com> Subject: First Driving school experience Going through archives and being on these type BMW lists for 5+ years, I have seen many suggestions for a first driving scool experience. #6. Kumho MX's vs Falken Azenis - from DocWyte
Top
Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 17:51:01 -0800 (PST) From: DocWyte <josh_wyte@yahoo.com> Subject: Kumho MX's vs Falken Azenis Well, after looking at my tire choices in the 235-40-17 size, I've decided to heck with that size and just go with the later ('96-'99) M3 tire size. I have a '95 M3 with the staggered ltw wheels. So I'll go with 225-45-17 fronts and 245-40-17 rears. I'd like to hear from people who are using the MX's and Azenis. How are they driving around, wear, wet traction, auto-x, etc. I had the Azenis on my old 16v auto-x car and was very impressed with them. Extremely sticky, good in the rain and cheap. Tire Rack seems to really like the MX, compares them favorably to the S03, but I'd like to hear from people who have them... (even better if you've had the azenis too!) Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 17:58:44 EST From: Shelhart2@aol.com Subject: AST light staying on I was driving home from the BMW dealer (picking up a new $5 blinker bulb) and the AST light came on. I depressed the switch and nothing happened (the light remained light). The brakes are functioning properly. Has anyone had any experience in diagnosing the problem? TIA and have a wonderful holiday. #8. Disputing a handicap parking violation - from Dorffer, Rich
Top
Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 10:30:43 -0500 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Disputing a handicap parking violation I think it will be up to the court to decide if he was parked or not and if he wants to fight it, go ahead. I have fought speeding tickets and won and last I checked, speeding is breaking the law. Aside from Michael's comments about his sister (which I can fully understand and appreciate), I interpreted the situation like many, that there were other open handicap spots, he was temporarily stopped to load some stuff and was with the vehicle the entire time. Personally, I would have rather had him parked there compared to my experience the other night where the idiots drop people off at the local grocery store. One person pulled up, the driver hopped out and went inside while the passenger got out and moved to the driver's seat, eventually backed the car up five feet after a few minutes (so they weren't directly in front of the entrance where people were trying to walk out of the store and this genius had parked in front of) and put on their hazard flashers. One person pulled up to the tiny entrance, dropped off the person they had with them and then just stayed put. These two geniuses sat there facing each other but were clearly in the way of the drive past the front of the store for all the others just trying to drop off patrons and move on. I dropped off my wife before these two numbskulls got there, drove to the back of the lot and sat where I could see the entrance so I could pull around to pick up my wife. I sat for fifteen minutes watching these idiots foul up traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian, and they never moved. When it came time for me to pick up my wife, it was like an autocross to get around these idiots (SIGH)! This is way OT but I am plowing forward anyway. Have you ever noticed how many unused handicap parking spaces there are? Some stores have a glut of them in particular. This is even more amazing if you look to see the number of "non-handicapped" handicapped people park in these spaces, hop out of there car and walk into the store. Sure enough, they have their little handicap placard but they look as healthy physically as anyone else. I particularly like it when I see this at Home Depot and the handicapped person is carrying out heavy items, or handling a load of wood, or whatever. I have heard by some accounts that more than 2/3 of the people with the handicap placards aren't handicapped at all. Flame on. No offense to the truly handicapped. I park far out anyway to keep the door dent mongers from nailing my car. This is even difficult at the malls these days :-) Later, Rich - cringing at the whip 95 M3 - obligatory E36 M3 content - I am still trying to decide what suspension direction to go.
