Its not a problem, but just so you know and the car is less fun to drive IMO setup that way. I autocross it heavily, and I prefer the extra set of doors during the week. I haven't found any downside to the 4 door, so it's just personal preference. Mine's lighter than most 2 doors, since it has no sunroof, and no other options. Other than options, I think they are about the same weight. Chris 97 M3/4

You should start out your driver's school experience with street tires. It really doesn't matter what kind you have, you will still be learning. After you have gained some experience, you might want to take the plunge into R compounds, but its really not necessary unless you start running with the faster groups. #5. Shifter noise video update - from Chris Conner

Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 19:30:31 -0500 From: "Chris Conner" <chris@digital7.com> Subject: Shifter noise video update Still haven't figured out my shifter/tranny noise issue. I took some video to demonstrate, as it is hard to describe. Note how the noise occurs only during acceleration, and mostly stops while coasting in gear. There is a different loose metal on metal noise while shifting, as well as when comign toa stop, both in gear and in neutral. Clutch in/out does not affect it. http://m3.digital7.com/shifter for the videos. Again, any help is appreciated. I'm going to swap on the stock m3 shifter as soon as I can get a bitch clip from the dealer. Chris

How many miles total on the car? My guess is a worn out guibo. Check it for cracks, esp. around the bolt holes. Also, since you were already missing one bolt, I would do a complete check of all fasteners under the car, front to rear. Hope that helps, Jim Bassett

Thanks everybody for your suggestions, I appreciate it. Tires were road-force balanced last week. As mentioned, the control arms & bushings are new as well. A couple people recommended swapping the front wheels left to right - <shrug> I'll give it a try, it's free :-) I've got an appt with my mechanic on the 2nd to have a look-see; the whole front suspension & subframe were out of the car in Oct, maybe something loosened up? (I doubt it, but we're running out of ideas :-)). Anyway, thanks again, and if you have any other thoughts, I'd like to hear them. Happy Holidays, Jim Bassett

At 07:43 AM 12/22/02, Patrick Buthmann talked about: > Any known drawbacks to running the M3/4 as a track car? Absolutely none! (Not that I'm biased or anything - ~80 track days in the sedan :-)) As mentioned, you'll have about 1" more head room in the sedan. And I've found the Sport seats in the Sedan to be more comfortable than the Vader seats in the coupe (but then, I'm 5'11" and only ~135lbs). I found that the sedan was easier to carry stuff to/from the track, and I don't have the fold-down rear seats. Four track tires in the rear seat, all the other track stuff in the trunk. My car was a combined daily driver, track car, and baby hauler until last Oct when it was retired from the track due to the purchase of the race (I went the opposite direction from you :-)). Monthly inspections for drivers schools/track events, meticulous maintenance, an outstanding mechanic and of course the help of this list kept it nearly trouble-free for the 3 years I tracked it. (Only problem I had was loosing a power steering hose at Buttonwillow.) And there's nothing quite like passing Porsches, Vipers & Corvettes in a "family car" :-) My 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - nearing an 1/8-of-a-million miles, enjoying retirement 1993 325is #44 - enjoying a brief 2 month break

It is time for a new battery in the 'ol E36 and I'd love to replace the original with a lighter one! After doing a bit of research it seems as if the Dynabatt won't work for my needs. This baby needs to start 24/7/365 and in any temp, from -20 to +100. I don't need a 10lb "race" battery but I'd be happy finding a 25-35lb one instead of the stocker at ~50lbs! Happy Holidays, Rob

Gains: - less weight - less maintenance Drawbacks: - won't be able to dehumidify the moist air blasting on an already fogged up interior windshield when first turning on the heat during those rainy, cold nights - will get less fuel economy with windows down & AC removed than with windows up & AC on (reference: BMW Magazine article stating BMW compressors are so efficient that the fuel consumption was lower with the AC on & windows shut than with AC off & a window open) - less residual value to car ...probably a bunch of other drawbacks... It's probably not a good idea if you're doing it to save fuel, or if you think you rarely need it because you live in a cold climate. It still serves a useful purpose to defog windows, esp. in the winter, a reasonable safety feature to have... ______________________ Everyone remember to run your A/C at least once per month in the winter (it's in the owner's manual somewhere I think)...the purpose is to preserve your A/C system's condition (I can't remember why, but you are supposed to run it occasionally in the winter) - Skip "William T.
