The car is a 99 with 55k miles. Guibo looks perfect to me, no cracking. I checked the tightness of its nuts and bolts as well. I really need to get it up on a lift and leave it in gear, so I can find where the problem is. Unfortunately this is a bad time for it to happen :) Oh well. Merry Christmas, happy holidays. Chris

#2. [E36M3] E36 M3/4-door vs E36 M3/2-door... - from Craig Perrin

Brian Canfield, an acquaintance and a talented driver (BMW and Porsche), claims that because of the extra pillar, the dynamics of the M3/4 are superior to those of the coupe. Having watched Brian mix it up at Daytona with some top drivers, I would tend to respect his opinion. My 95 coupe is better looking, though! FOR SALE: I have a left over set of shocks and springs from JAMEX for an e36 car they are for a 325 (92-99), I think they will work on an M3 if you use 325 sway bar mounts, so I was told. I need to get $450.00 for the set they are NIB never used left over inventory from when I had JAMEX stuff a few years ago. Gary

#5. Speedo - from Patrick Dargan
Top
Date: Wed, 25 Dec 2002 13:40:03 -0500 From: "Patrick Dargan" <darg01@earthlink.net> Subject: Speedo 1. Has anybody else encountered this problem? If so, how did you fix it? I had the same problem. They couldn't find anything wrong (it was working again when I took it to the dealer.) They did say, however, that they noted it on the record in case it happened again. Next time (about a year later), started again. This time when the speedo quit, the radio speakers would shut off. They said there was no connection between the two (hard to believe), but replaced the speed sensor and the radio. No problems since. 2. I took the car into the dealer a year ago with this problem and they could not find anything wrong (you're all shocked, I know). The car is now out of warranty. Since the problem was reported during the warranty period, does BMW still have a responsibility for fixing the problem? Does anybody have experience in getting this sort of after-warranty service provided? I think if it was noted on the service record, they will still fix it under warranty. Mine was still in warranty, however. 3. Since the odometer quits working when this happens, I now cannot honestly say that the odometer is correct if I sell the car. This is a HUGE problem. I think BMW owes it to me to find the problem and fix it since this affects my resell value in a huge way. What do you guys think? If you are going to sell the car with 50-75,000 miles on, what difference does another few thousand make. I believe there was a post some time ago that indicated that it was almost impossible to get a new speedo set to the current mileage. Had to be sent to Germany or something. Maybe someone else remembers.

#6. RE:M3 Speedometer Intermittent Failure - from HYPERM3@aol.com
Top
Date: Wed, 25 Dec 2002 13:41:58 EST From: HYPERM3@aol.com Subject: RE:M3 Speedometer Intermittent Failure I too have had this problem. Took it to my local dealer a couple times and they said they couldn't find anything and that it wasn't anything to worry about. Heres what Ive noticed about it: A) It happens randomly at times but I can invoke it at a stop light by first-second-first with clutch in before engaging. B) Everything on the dash dies except for the Tach, which is fine, because I know what speed I'm at usually in every gear by looking at rpms. C) For a while the dash wouldn't start working again till I hit exactly 55mph, now its exactly 45mph that does it every time. So if I stay under 45, it will not work the whole drive. D) After the dash does start working again, the fuel gauge dips and is not accurate till next fillup. And yes, the odometer does not work as well when this is happening. So, does this mean many incorrect mileage vehicles out there bringing up a liability lawsuit to keep us all who have had this happen, and a dealership recording of the incident while under warranty, protecting us from fraud? Date: Wed, 25 Dec 2002 13:46:52 EST From: Carguymb@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] M3 Speedometer Intermittent Failure I had somehting like this happen a couple of times 3-4 years ago on my Z3, when I drove from Chicago to California. I figure I "lost" around 35 miles or so. The dealer couldn't track it down, and it hasn't reoccured, even on a subsequent California to Pennsylvania marathon. I wish I'd checked against the OBC, but I didn't think to do it at the time. My M3 sometimes has a "lazy" speedometer when it's cold, under-reading by up to 15 mph before everything warms up (I've not determined if the odometer slows down as well). I'd assume the problem is somehow related to the speed sensor in the diff (since that's what the dealer checked at the time), but can't offer much insight, beyond substantiating the problem. To Shane's questions, it's going to be up to dealer goodwill. Some are cooperative on things like this, others will look for all sorts of opportunities to weasel out of taking responsibility. I don't think the resale issue is huge. You would know, but I'd assume the lost mileage is really not a huge percentage of the total mileage, plus what's the factory odometer error percentage anyway? Also, who's going to know, unless you have a major crisis of conscience? IF it were a leased car (I assume it's not, in this case), this might even be a positive for you! Dealer looked at it under warranty but found no fault codes registered. Since the car was going out of warranty shortly, dealer told me it would be covered if problem persisted. Low and behold, 51K miles, problem returns. The dealer this time replaced the speed sensor without question. This fixed the prob. I had the car for another 20K miles and problem didn't return. Hope this helps Don
