#2. Head Gasket Replacement - from Chris Gant
Top
Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 10:25:09 -0500 From: Chris Gant <cgant@cox.net> Subject: Head Gasket Replacement Hi gruppe, Looking for some advise... It's my first major problem with the car in almost 5 years of track abuse, and it looks like I've got a failing head gasket, by the amount of coolant in the oil. Hopefully that's all it is, anyway. I'm probably going to take the plunge and install the cam kit ('95 M3) while it's all apart, and wanted to get some advise on what else I should go ahead and check/replace while I'm in there, like retianers, springs, etc. Also the Vanos has become annoyingly loud lately and thought it might be a good time to replace that as well. Anyone know offhand how much the vanos system sells for, and what else should be replaced along with it? I'm guessing he chain tensioners should also be replaced? Any advise is appreciated. My local Mechanic (who also club races, so I trust him) will be doing the work, but I've never had to give much thought to engine internals, so I want to make sure I cover all the bases before he starts. Thanks! Chris

#3. RE: Mounting rear spoiler w/o brake light - from Paul Smith

Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 10:43:08 -0500 From: Paul Smith <pauls@ontario.com> Subject: RE: Mounting rear spoiler w/o brake light I just installed an aftermarket wing on the back on my 98 M3/4. The kit came with the plugs you need to have for the underside on the trunk lid. If I am correct, I drilled about 1/4 inch holes in the top of the trunk lid. On the underside, I drilled at least 3/4 inch holes. This let me get the correct tools for the install. I only had 2 per side. I can get you more detail if needed. You can probably pick up plugs at and auto store or order packets of various sizes over the net. Good luck. It is a weird feeling drilling into a perfectly good car! Measure twice, drill once! Paul Smith From: "K Quistorff" <kqkq@nc.rr.com> Subject: Mounting rear spoiler w/o brake light I recently purchased a factory BMW E36 rear spoiler w/o brake light and am having trouble figuring out how it will mount to my trunk lid. BTW, my M3 has not had a spoiler prior to this, and this spoiler definitely appears to be OEM BMW, it has the german text mold stamp on the underside of the driver's side corner. Unlike the usual OEM M3 spoiler (w/brake light) which mounts with two screws on each side along the edge of the trunk lid, this spoiler has three mounting holes per side, all of which are further inboard of the edge of the trunk lid. Mounting holes in these locations will not be along the strip/edge of the trunk lid, but instead into the hollow area with the formed sheet metal below. Having never seen the underside of a trunk with this type spoiler mounted, I'm curious if holes need to be drilled all the way through the inner/second layer of the trunk lid just to get the mounting screws to pass through - or is there some "trick" to the way it mounts? If access thru-holes are necessary, is there some type of plug to cover these extra/unsightly holes up on the inside of the trunk lid? I already tried taking it to my local BMW dealership to try to find out the deal, but their body shop is not BMW-specific (wasn't sure I'd get the right answer), and the wait to talk to someone was longer than I had. Any info is greatly appreciated. Regards, Keith Q. 1996 M3 Cary, NC

#4. ZKW or Hella with LED halo ?? - from The Buch

Turner supplies the Hella configuration which is the OEM supplier to the 5-series that started the angel eyes craze. Most others use ZKW with a so-called gen4 demon eyes kit. It's still close enough to Christmas to rationalize one more self-gift!! Thanks, Doug

#5. Calling All Cars! Looking for a few M3s for an Article... - from Peter Guagenti

Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 08:53:35 -0800 From: Peter Guagenti <peter@guagenti.com> Subject: Calling All Cars! Looking for a few M3s for an Article... So you've tuned the hell out of your M3 and think it's the hottest, most well set-up M3 street car on the road... Wanna see it in print? I'm looking for a few well-tuned M3s for an article I'm working on for Roundel. I'm looking for cars that embody the best in street tuning from each generation of the M3 -- E30, E36, E46. The cars that we're looking for are equally as comfortable on a track or at the local autocross as they are on the highway. Cars that look as good as they drive. If your car is truly unique, is well tuned in all areas and has an attractive "look", you're who we're looking for. If all you've got is a Hamann body kit and a shift knob, you're not. Bonus points for very unique set-ups -- euro motors, custom paint, elegant interiors, etc. If you're interested, e-mail me: - a brief description of your car - a link to a web page with multiple photos of your ride (do not e-mail them to me!) - tell me a bit about yourself and why you made the mods you did to your car In order to be in the piece, you'll need to be able to meet the following requirements: - Must be able to be in Northern California in late January/early February for a photo shoot and test drive - Car must be freshly detailed for the shoot E-mail me with any questions. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing your ride! -peterg

Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 12:18:13 -0500 From: Jeremy.Thissell@USPTO.GOV Subject: RE: Airbag Dash Light I have the same problem. You can spend $72 at the dealer, just for them to hook up the computer (not including what it costs to fix whatever sensor is shot), or you can wait a few weeks. I emailed Jim Conforti about this recently, and he said he's been working on an Airbag system tool that will be released through Peake Research. Look for it within the next few weeks. Based on the cost of Peake's engine code tool, I'm guessing it will cost in the area of $150, but if the problem ever happens again, the tool is paid for, not to mention if you end up replacing the seatbelt buckle sensor yourself, which would also save you some money. Anyways, I heard it from the horses mouth, so I'm waiting for a while to see if I can take care of this myself. YMMV, -Jeremy

#9. Which euro headlight to get? - from Rex Tener

Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 09:18:53 -0800 From: Rex Tener <rex_tener@yahoo.com> Subject: Which euro headlight to get? I am finally going to get euro headlights for my '96 M3. I looked at the old messages and found where Alan Taur posted the part numbers for the early Bosch headlights. 1995 (e36) M3 European Bosch head light left 63-12-1-387-041 1995 (e36) M3 European Bosch head light right 63-12-1-387-042 These are $235 a piece from Pacific BMW. It is hard to tell wether these lights work stand alone, or only work with the veritcal headlight control system. I am also looking at lavalighting's ZKW's and plug-n-play harness for $389.00. <http://www.lavalighting.com/ellipsoid.html> Anyone get the ZKW's and wish they had bought the early Bosch headlights? Thanks, -- Rex Tener rex_tener@yahoo.com

If you're in the tri-state area, I'll even help install it :) Just got it back from Nakamichi and it's fully refreshed (the discs were stuck from removing the head unit). Was thinking of $200.
