What if you run into that one fan clutch that's buggered up and doesn't spin freely? What if a loose piece of clothing gets caught up in the blades and pulls your hand into the belts? The thing is, you only have to get one thread started, then remove your hands from the engine bay entirely, start the engine, and it will spin on the rest of the way. So why risk this shortcut to save a couple of minutes of trying to get the nut started? Most of the times I couldn't get that nut started I was turning it the wrong way. If you remember it's reverse threaded, it usually cooperates after a few tries. Yes, I know you already know all this, and I admit I've thought about doing it this way myself, but always thought better of it. -- Ron Katona Lowell Seaton wrote: > alex.fadeev@verizon.com writes: > > > <Do the following at your own risk> > > During installation, have a helper turn the engine over as you hold the > > fan and press it against the water pump. The matching nuts are part# 18.30.1.737.774 I just picked up this hardware from the dealer since I'm pulling the cat pipe down to replace the flex disc. They had to order 4 of the 6 studs, but the price was only $1.22 ea. J-

Date: Sun, 5 Jan 2003 15:08:53 -0500 From: "K Quistorff" <kqkq@nc.rr.com> Subject: Zimmermans Best price I've seen on Zimmerman cross drilled rotors is $108/pr for rear and $116/pr for front. If interested, click on "Specials" at http://www.bimmerparts.com/. I've never ordered from Bimmerparts.com, and this is not an endorsement. They also seem to have the best price on E36 OEM radiators - $125. BTW, I've never heard of any real advantage to cross drilled rotors, and they are generally not recommended for track use due to tendency to cracking. Date: Sun, 5 Jan 2003 18:24:36 -0500 From: "dholeman" <dholeman@racepad.com> Subject: Driver's Ed & Insurance Yes, Here in MA we are screwed. I want to point out that everyone is worried about their car being covered. That is the least of your worries. Say you crack up your car during a DE session and you injure your instructor. Lets say debris from your car injures a spectator. Guess who pays - you. You are looking at medical bills and basically unlimited liability. Forget the car this is the real risk. If you think your umbrella policy will cover you you might need to take a close look. Many times exclusions in your other policies (car & home) carry over. BMWCCA insures DE events but gets liability insurance that protects the club but not the participants. SCCA gets better coverage for its events and offers some medical and liability coverage (after your coverage). Details can be found on that at www.scca.org I sure wish that BMWCCA would look to extend coverage for medical and liability like the SCCA does. David

Date: Sun, 5 Jan 2003 18:22:13 EST From: Shelhart2@aol.com Subject: FS: 1998 M3 Orlando, Fl Happy New Year to all. It has finally come to the point to where I need 4 doors. We have 3 children in stair step fashion (2,3,4) and the minivan alone isn't cutting it. The kids have seen the inside only 3x and I'm afraid I can't fend them off any longer. I've looked into a 540 or E320 sport as a replacement. I'm not excited about parting with it. Specs: 1998 M3 Coupe Florida car from purchase 2nd owner (last 3 years from 30k miles) 67,500 miles Techno Violet with Gray leather 8.5+ on a scale of 1-10 (I'm picky) All options (including sunroof, lighted shift knob, Harmon Kardon, CD Changer and rear factory wing) Aftermarket: 2002 - New BBS RC's (17X8) with Kuhmo's (235's all around) 2000 - Dinan intake, chip and stainless exhaust 2001 - Fischer stainless brake lines (front and rear) 2001 - X brace 2001 - JTD underpanel 2001 - JTD front strut tower brace 2002 - Brembo cross drilled rotors on front (for looks) 2002 - UUC aluminum pedal kit 2002 - Rogue Engineering short shift kit Tinted windows (came with the car) Pics at: <A HREF="http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/shel_hart/vwp?.dir=/BMW&.src=ph&.dnm=BMW+drivers+side.jpg&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/bc/shel_hart/lst%3f%26.dir=/BMW%26.src=ph%26.view=t">http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/shel_hart/vwp?.dir=/BMW&.src=ph& ..dnm=BMW+drivers+side.jpg&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/bc/she l_hart/lst%3f%26.dir=/BMW%26.src=ph%26.view=t</A> The car has only seen one drivers school at Sebring in its life. It is garaged at home & work. No paint / touch up work. Zymol on exterior and Leatherique on leather. 60k service done. Wouldn't hurt to upgrade shocks... Dealer did Dinan installation and has done fluid changes regularly (antifreeze, brake, etc.). Mobil 1 every 3k, Super Blue for brakes, synthetic transmission fluid (dealer). I'd like to get $25.5k for it unless someone doesn't want the mods. I have all stock parts sans exhaust and rims (have a set of 17X8 Momo Sports as well). Please email privately. Additional pics can be forwarded (my camera ran out of battery today). Thanks for the bandwidth. Shel Hart 813.727.0129 Cell

#9. Optima Battery? - from bs
Top
Date: Sun, 05 Jan 2003 19:20:33 -0500 From: bs <m3bs@comcast.net> Subject: Optima Battery? Any of you track junkies put an Optima in your M3? My 3/94 vintage battery is finally giving out. I figure with my new suspension, the extra vibration tolerance might be a good thing. The Optima series 34 (the largest available) is 2-1/4" shorter in length, and about an inch taller in height. Is it simply a matter of fabricating a plate to clamp the rear of the battery? I don't need the battery cover, so height is not a problem. Will the positive cable reach the teminal without modification? I searched the archives, but didn't come up with anything.

Josh, I have been very pleased with past purchases from bimmerparts. I have thier aluminum housing, and the install is very easy if you don't mind the mess of coolant everywhere. I was doing the radiator, water pump, thermostat all at the same time. Nothing tricky about the housing to install. It comes with a new gasket, and if you get a new thermostat, it has the other gasket. No sealant necessary. Have had a set on my car for about six months and they're coming off next week. First of all they rusted immediately. . . after the first wash. . . everything except the actual contact area is now thick rust (so much for eye candy). Secondly, the fronts are warped after only six months of everyday street driving. . . no track, no autocross or anything even remotely extreme. Very disappointing and a waste of money IMHO. Just my $0.02 Calvin Hare '96 M3
