It is on the passenger side of the engine, up under the exhaust manifold. It is not super hard to remove. You only have to lift the right front end up enough to crawl under the car. I forget the size of the plug but it is probably 17mm or so. It takes a little trial and error to find the right angle of attack but it is not too bad. Two cautions. 1) Don't try to drain the coolant when the engine is hot!! You will burn your self on the exhaust manifold. 2) Coolant is going to splash everywhere. You are going to get wet. #8. Input shaft seal?? - from Jamie Howton

Date: Sun, 12 Jan 2003 13:47:32 GMT From: "Jamie Howton" <jhowton@fotofab.com> Subject: Input shaft seal?? Any ancient bavarian secrets regarding the installation of the transmission Input Shaft Seal in an E36 M3 S50US 5 Speed ? I installed the current one without the BMW installation tool called out in Bentley and it leaks. I have since manufactured a tool by solvent gluing two pieces of PVC waterpipe together, then squaring off the end. See: http://www.howton.net/iss3.jpg http://www.howton.net/iss2.jpg http://www.howton.net/iss1.jpg I am beginning removal of everything again today and really don't want to go in again for some time after this, but is it _really_ necessary to shell out the $$ for the factory tool in order to do this job correctly? It was in great shape when he got it. A few months later I ran into him and the car. The windshield was busted and he told me some story about hitting a break or something. It looked like a bullet hole to me!!! Now what has happened to it in the last 2 yrs is beyond me. Hate to hear that my old car is experiencing issues, it was the best car I have ever owned and regret selling it. If you have his email addy, let me know as I would like to get in touch with him.
