#1. Z3 Reinforcement Plates & GC RSMs - from Riley, Scott

Date: Tue, 14 Jan 2003 11:01:38 -0600 From: "Riley, Scott" <sriley@cardinalcapital.com> Subject: Z3 Reinforcement Plates & GC RSMs Is it possible to use these 2 parts together? I have not seen the Z3 plates in person (only ETK). My GC RSMs have the half-ring reinforcement connecting the two mounting bolts. Would the Z3 plates be able to seat properly on the GC RSM? Given all of the recent talk about rear shock tower sheet metal damage, I thought that adding the Z3 plates would provide even more protection. TIA, Scott

Hopefully, I can bend everything back in place and get the > sideskirt reattached. The rivets on the bottom have a pin insert to expand it. You can use a panel puller or a flathead with pliers to pull those out. The two rivets in the rear wheel well are a PITA. They too have a pin inserted, but it's a blind type where there isn't a head to pull after installation. After you get those off, you pull on the rockers outwards (perpendicular to the car). There are about 10 plastic clips holding the rockers in place. The plastic clip will let go of the rocker. Installation requires popping the plastic clip out of the clamp and snapping them onto the rocker. Then you line up the points and push in. Chester =====

I am >looking at batteries right now as my current one is almost seven >years old. I would like to use the Optima orange top, but only if >it directly bolts in. Thanks for reminding me .. . :-) I just checked last week. The orange-top battery will NOT work because the terminals are located too far to the outside of the car when installed in the M3. The + terminal is in the upper right quadrant and the - terminal is in the lower right quadrant (when you're looking at the battery, standing behind the car with the trunk open). What you need is + in the UL and - in the LL quadrants. I have a sneaking suspicion that perhaps all of the Optima cases now have the new tabs on the bottom that I've first seen on the Orange-top Optima. If that's true, then a Red-top Optima may very well be a bolt-in for the M3 (the one I'm using with the adapter is a Red-Top, which has the posts in the right places -- it just doesn't have the tabs at the bottom like a normal battery does, so that's why I built an adapter). So, if Red-top Optima now have the mounting tabs on the bottom, one might well work in the E36 M3. But someone has to test those tabs for fit -- I didn't even bother trying the Orange-top once I saw the terminals were in the wrong places and the cables wouldn't reach. Date: Tue, 14 Jan 2003 13:13:20 -0500 From: ChuckBrazeau@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] Z3 Reinforcement Plates & GC RSMs Scott, You would need to put the Z3 plate on FIRST, then the GC half-ring on top of the Z3 plate. Otherwise you would defeat the purpose of adding the Z3 plates. I don't have GC RSMs, so i don't know if the studs on the half-ring are long enough to accommodate the thickness of the Z3 plates, but they're not very thick, so i imagine that it wouldn't be an issue. Not true. I have Optimas in both my M3 and my wife's 328i. The ground strap was a somewhat tight fit with little slack (or was it power? it's been 2-3 years since I touched them), but it does fit like a charm. I've never seen a battery with terminals diagonally opposite of each, which is what the above description implies. > So, if Red-top Optima now have the mounting tabs on the bottom, > one might well work in the E36 M3. Orange Optima terminal locations are in the right places. At least they were 3 and 2 years ago when I had bought them for my cars. I remember seeing an orange Optima at Costco not too long ago and AFAIR the terminals were still in the traditional spots. alex f
