I also have Steve D's original jack plate that theoretically allows you to lift the car and put the jack stands all at the same corner. In my experience, the front of your jack will interfere with the perfect placement of the jack stands. It was less of a problem with a small portable cheapo Sears jack than with a full size AC jack. However, Sears jack had an undersized saddle that would not Steve D's jack plate. Catch 22. Solved it by jacking the car up as described on Ron's site. I put a hockey puck into the AC jack's saddle to increase the contact surface between the jack and the car. After lowering the car (TC's TrackLine kit), I could not longer slide the AC DK13 jack under the lowered nose of the car. A longer DK13HLQ would solve that problem, but would have been too long and unmaneuverable in my standard 20x20 garage. Thus I either drive on a 2x4 before lifting the nose, or lift the sides up (sometimes with Steve D's plate if my wife's car is also parked in the garage), place 2x4 and then lift both front wheels under the subframe. alex f

#2. Rim Question - from Michael Michalski

Date: Tue, 14 Jan 2003 12:40:35 -0600 From: "Michael Michalski" <mmichalski@leaselink.com> Subject: Rim Question Hi guys, One quick question. I have a local guy here in Chicago selling some old rims and tires he had laying around. Wanted to forward the email he sent out to ask if they will fit on our cars. I was thinking if they fit, I would use them for some much needed snow tires. What do ya think? "I was just cleaning out the basement in anticipation of my newest motorcycle project and I realized that I still have a set (4) of wheels and tires that I got a while ago for my old E36 - which I no longer have. They are For Sale. Four black rims with BMW hubcabs from an early E36 318i. The tires are in excellent shape and are all season 185/15's - I believe that they are Michelin's. I would guess that they have 10 - 15K on them and plenty of miles to go. The rims would be great for snows or you could just run these babies as they are. The first guy at my door here in Oak Park with $75 takes them away." Michael Michalski 97 M3 4DR Windy City Chapter

You know, this may be a color perception issue -- are you sure you're not considering what I call the Red top to be an Orange top? The Orange is Safety Orange color -- the Red is, well, red. I've never seen Orange tops anywhere until I asked my local guy to get me a top-terminals only Optima. Apparently, that is now the Orange one. The Red one is top and side, the yellow one (top & side) is deep-discharge, and the blue one (top & top) is marine. I think I got those last two right. Orange isn't even listed on the Optima site ... There really isn't such a thing as an Orange top...not sure where you got the safety orange color one from. Anyway, he said the orange top is just a reverse poled battery that would make it more suitable for our applications. He also said that using a Optima battery in a BMW would not be a problem. Ron should of used a green "X" instead of the red one. :) My only issue is that the car is too low for my Lincoln jack, to reach those points. I usually just put some 2x10 scraps under the wheels before jacking. Jeff - I don't wear loafers, but my wife ties my shoes. Starting from late last year, going back to the middle of 1999. Basically all Roundel magazines laying about my apartment except for the few more recent copies. I was just going to recycle 'em but then realized that someone may want them? Btw, I'm in Southern California. :-) Phil 99 Estoril M3/2

#8. New! - All Aluminum Radiator for E36 - from Neil Maller

Date: Tue, 14 Jan 2003 14:13:35 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: New! - All Aluminum Radiator for E36 Point your browsers at: http://absoluteradiator.com/ProductPage.asp?idProd=53 to see a newly available all aluminum radiator advertised as a drop-in replacement for our familiar, and famously failure-prone, stock plastic/metal unit. It's made in Australia, and they claim 20% higher cooling capacity than stock. At $455 each plus shipping this Al radiator isn't unreasonably priced as a durable premium alternative. The only other one I know of is custom made from ActiveAutowerke and costs a whopping $1950! At 6 years old, 75K miles, and with plenty of high temperature track days, my M3's radiator is probably living on borrowed time. I'd been considering installing a new stock unit as a pre-emptive strike, but the aluminum unit seems like a much better idea. I ordered one today, should have it next week. Neil 96 M3
