#2. Frozen Coolant - from Dorffer, Rich

Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2003 15:57:50 -0500 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Frozen Coolant Just as a reminder, a proper 50/50 mixture of BMW coolant and water provides corrosion and freezing protection down to -34 degrees Fahrenheit or -37 degrees Celsius. A 60/40 mixture of BMW coolant/water provides corrosion and freezing protection down to -62 degrees Fahrenheit or -52 degrees Celsius. You should not exceed an antifreeze ratio of 60%. Geof obviously had a different situation for his race car (mostly water with Water Wetter) but most of us should have proper protection in this currently frigid environment. If you don't, why don't you? You can also have the coolant mixture tested to determine its effectiveness if you don't know what mixture or effectiveness is left. Regards, Rich - hoping Geof doesn't have any issues... 95 M3 - isn't used in the winter 90 325is - 4 degrees Fahrenheit this morning, the 325is doesn't start as easily at those temps but it isn't the coolant that is the issue.

#4. Side Jacking Holes - from Steve Klein
Top
Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2003 15:19:47 -0600 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: Side Jacking Holes So is the wisdom that the structure around the holes is substantially weaker (in terms of supporting the car in the air) than the pucks? I ask because I was about to embark on the 'brilliant' idea of machining four pins to fit into the holes to allow me to support the car with jackstands outside of the pucks. I was going to make hardened steel pins with a 'hat' on the end and another 'washer' inboard that would sandwich the tops of my u-shaped jackstands, thus keeping them from slipping off the ends and allowing them to rotate about the pins so I could jack the front from the subframe, place stands under the pins then jack the rear from the subframe and place the stands under the pins in the rear. If this is not advisable, then I'll ditch the Idea, and replace my jackstands and adapters for jackstands with a better cradle. Thanks for the advice, Steve

My son's 93 325 is stiff enough to lift the side from the rear as well. However he only has 2 wheels on each side, kinda like my M3. 4 wheels/side. Impressive. Like a Dualie front and rear? "Yeah, my M3 is sooo stiff now that I got the X brace, that I've found that when I jack up one side using the rear side jack point with the jack plate inserted, not only do I get the rear wheel off the ground, but all 4 wheels comes off the ground enough such that with that one jack location, I can easily change all four wheels on that side." Im sure its not as good a tool, but its been working fine for me. Anyway, I dont know if this is true to all M3s, or just to ones with X braces, but Ive found that when I jack up one side using the rear side jack point with the jack plate inserted, not only do I get the rear wheel off the ground, but the front comes off the ground enough such that with that one jack location, I can easily change both wheels on that side. I presume This is ok, as its still only lifting a single side. Also, I thought the 1995 325is used a different manual tranny than the E36M3?!? eBay rulez! ;-) Later, Rich 95 M3 - stock exhaust with a UUC exhaust on the shelf just waiting for installation 90 325is - Stromung exhaust...loud.
