#3. Compression Test - from Juan Rico
Top
Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2003 09:55:47 -0800 From: Juan Rico <juan_rico@captionsinc.com> Subject: Compression Test Had a compression test done this weekend on my car. The results were 175 on all cylinders, except #5, which scored a 160... This was with three cranks. Now, I've seen numbers on this list much higher than that, around 200- or maybe I'm imagining things... Is this because more cranks were done to achieve a higher number? Is there no uniformity in the way these tests are performed? My mechanic said the results were very good, and well within spec-- the engine is very healthy and pulls strongly-all this according to him. The engine BTW has 155K miles on it. Anybody else had similar results? What do you guys think...? Juan.

I know I know... not fair :-) but the question was thrown out there! There is some corollation though -- problems that a race car has are basically the same as problems that a street car will have after many many miles. I guess the question should be "has any street only M3 had the floor rip out?" To which I honestly don't know... This says some tracked-but-not-raced M3's have had it... http://member.rivernet.com.au/btaylor/BMWText/technical/DiffSubframeRippingOutE36.html Maybe it's one of those things that might show up at 300k+ miles, which would make it Not Very Interesting... My driver's side vader creaks fairly badly. I'm not huge, 180 lbs. The bottom seat rail has been replaced, that didn't help. Just wondering if anyone has really gone after these creaks, most of which occur with lateral stress on the seat (i.e. turning). It's really annoying and hard to figure out what exactly is loose or noisy down there. thanks -Jeff

Fun times, ain't they? :-( BTW - after much searching I finally found a source for ATE Superblue that wasn't trying to charge $20-$25 a can for it. A Porsche shop, one of the best ones in the Bay Area in fact, and $12.50 which is a reasonable local price. So I'll pop over there today and bleed them this afternoon while the car is still up on jack stands with the wheels off. I have lots of time on my hands for this stuff at the moment.... The numbers that everyone goes by are BMW published numbers. I have yet to see anyone post direct weight comparisons of an E36 vs E46 in comparable situations. Scott

Some of the others have been spot on, I felt like this one was not very good at all. Mike -----Original Message----- From: Dorffer, Rich [mailto:RDORFFER@CleIndians.com] Further to your point, the E36 buyers guide was filled with factual mistakes and inaccuracies and poor editing. I don't believe Matt was the source of these mistakes though.

When I've the compression checked on either of my cars, it's been 10 cranks. And, what you're mainly looking for is consistency across all cylinders, not necessarily the absolute number. No more than 10%(?) variation across cylinders, IIRC. My 2 cents, Jim Bassett
