I'm still on the fence, but I'll let you know what decision I end up making. (I actually would love to get a ride in one or better yet test drive one, but the dealers won't let you until you're about to sign....). I read the Roundel floppy shifter fix article, went into the basement and got my M3 on jack stands. I took one look at the access plug to the transmission and said no way is there enough clearance, with the car on jack stands. I'm not even sure that you could do it without dropping the transmission down. I think I'll be waiting until the clutch goes and then fix it. Thanks, Colin '98 M3/2 (JC intake + soft, Dinan suspension, X-brace.....)

I've since sold it and now drive a 95 M3 and a turbo 94 Miata. The Z06 is a much better car than the 99 C5 I owned, both in power and handling. However, some of my comments may still help with your decision. The major reason I sold the C5 was COST. Price out a replacement set of tires for a C5. The way I drive, I go through tires fairly quickly. With the C5, at the time, there were few replacement alternatives. There were a few minor quality issues: buzzing door panels, noisy fuel pump, etc. However, the most annoying to me was the passenger seat would fall forward under hard braking. I don't know if GM has fixed that issue. The only reason I would not buy a Z06 (besides cost) would be to wait for the C6. If the rumors are true, the C6 will be a much better car overall than the C5. Kinda shuddered when I got on the gas too. Got to work, popped the hood, getting a distinct ticking sound from the front of the motor. Car seems unhappy to rev too. Vanos? Getting it flatbedded to the dealer. Looks like a crapola rental car for a few days at least. Good thing I have a warranty! Well that probably rules that out, but the again, sometimes replacement parts tend to be defective. Obviously though it's hard to diagnose without being there. >Also, a bad O2 sensor wouldn't make the front of the >motor tick... No it wouldn't, but that noise may have nothing to do with what is wrong with your car. Geof

Kirk, I use Brembo rotors (from Bimmerworld, where I get all my BMW parts) on my E36 325i race car and have never had a problem with rotor warpage. I used the same set all last season (14 weekends) with no issue. That is until James saw them at the last weekend of the year and promptly installed a new set :-) Shane K. Just asking. David, I kinda have to agree with you. Swapping the viscous fan clutch for an electric fan seams like an answer to the question no-one asked ;-) I guess this is the Civic kidz influence: if the bad ass japanese ride has an electric fan, than it must be the golden standard. So to be cool now we all must drop the same 'mod' into our carzzz. Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> wrote > The stock aux fan isn't great by itself. It's sometime adequate, sometimes > not. Neil, Stock viscous clutch fan _is_ great. And since people report no problems running withOUT it during Dallas summers, running with it could be interpreted as an overkill and way above adequate. The only two reasons I continue to run with it are: 1. new viscous clutch is $50 vs. $300 for a new electric fan that is a PITA to replace. 2. whatever few horses I may be loosing have not stopped me from winning my autoX class. 3. in theory, viscous clutch is infinitely variable and can provide as little or as much resistance and cooling as required. Of course, that depends on the fan being properly engineered for your particular climate zone and the clutch working properly. In reality, it has to be an overkill. Still, it's an elegant solution to the variable cooling problem and I don't have enough incentives to futz with it. > Let me put it another way: the reason a simple fan delete doesn't do > it for me is that the next time I'm stuck in an interstate construction > zone in August without moving at more than a 1st gear crawl for 45 minutes, > I don't want to have my car overheat, and I don't want to have to explain > to my wife why I had to turn off the A/C and turn on the heat when it's 99 > degrees outside. Neil, I think you are getting a bit paranoid here. Lowell has addressed the issue of running without the main fan in triple digit Texas summers without overheating. Case closed. alex f
