#1. E36 M3 FS - cheap - from James Clay

Date: Thu, 6 Feb 2003 16:31:17 -0500 From: "James Clay" <james@bimmerworld.com> Subject: E36 M3 FS - cheap This car would be a perfect prepared or mod racecar. I just picked it up at auction yesterday and am waiting for arrival to our shop in VA. It is a 97, had an interior fire and would probably require a new roof skin and doors from my description (from heat warping). The body is straight mechanically complete, but no interior. Will require paint. Will sell for $7k in anyone is interested, otherwise I am going to part it out. James James Clay http://www.bimmerworld.com Engineered BMW Performance 540.639.9648

That being said, I think the topic of tires has been tread on to death. Everyone's driving style is completely different. Some people drive in the rain, others like myself never let the car see rain. I personally look for a tire that can perform like an R compound tire, because that's my driving style on the street. Everyone's opinions will be based on their experiences which may not equal yours on the same tires, on your roads. Everyone has good points about each tire they drive on or have experienced. Then again, these are all opinions which should be taken with a grain of salt. I hate my pilot sports, other people love them. The only thing you can do is try the tires yourself. That's it! With a 24 foot wide channel, is there any need for a garage >floor. I suspect your garage floor is just one big grate over a bed of gravel. The big hole is what the 24' channel drains into. Actually there are three drains in the channel that drain into the dry pit which is about 5' wide and 8' deep. The channel itself is about 6 inch wide and 4 inches deep and 24' across. Geof

My recent '97 M3/4 has twice as many miles as yours...I still love it, though. The engines are fundamentally different. The entire intake system is different, as is the exhaust. IIRC, you even have different blocks and heads between the two engines. Engine management software is different, as are ancillaries (e.g., flywheel). The US engine has much more torque down low, so the 0-60 times are very similar. When you get up to Autobahn speeds, though, the Euro motor pulls away. A Conforti chip will add ~20 hp (rough number pulled from my head). Other simple mods will take you up near the 300 hp threshold. Me, I'm just happy with what I've got. :-) KC Boyce '97 M3/4

Could have a faulty spring, but springs are pretty simple things and H&R is pretty good at making them. If you're getting coil-bind that you can actually hear, I'd say you have a blown shock or not enough bump stop (or both). The car should not be crashing down on the spring that hard. -- Ron Katona

#8. Car audio update - from Chester Wong

Date: Thu, 6 Feb 2003 23:22:13 -0800 (PST) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: Car audio update While I had most of the interior out of the car, I decided that my stereo needed an overhaul. Replacing the Nak MB-75 is an Alpine CDA-7998. The phantom faceplate automatically extends the display out or hides it when not in use. The new head also can play mp3s, has time correction, active crossovers, basically...all the bells and whistles. I discovered a few things during the revamp: - The driver door tweeter was wired incorrectly and would never receive power...ever! No wonder it didn't sound 100% complete before - The stealthboxes were wired incorrectly. Well, they were wired correctly but I had 2 sets of 2 channels bridged creating 2 bridged channels. Each bridged channel went to a stealthbox which is, by itself, an 8-ohm sub. My a/d/s/ amp never had a chance to properly drive the sub. I now have the two subs wired in parallel off of one bridged channel. Things I re-did: - I ran both power *AND* ground wires from the trunk to the head unit. I twisted the set and followed the main power line down until the front of the passenger seat where it made towards the tranny tunnel and up into the center console. - I gutted the existing RCAs and ran new Monster cable M1001XLNs--one 4 channel cable and one 2 channel cable. These are mucho expensivo cables, but just when I thought about doing the project, I received an e-mail from a fellow who complimented me on my BMW car audio writeup. The domain on his e-mail address just happened to be mostercable.com so I asked to be hooked up with a set. Normally, these two cables would retail for about $700!!! - I pitched the passive crossovers that came with the a/d/s/ 335.is2 front speakers and opted to use the head unit active crossovers. I disabled the amps active crossovers except for the sub channels (this was low passed higher than the the head unit would ever set it to, but I was getting some high frequency noise so I enabled this one). I now have one channel to each driver for the fronts and both subs running off of one bridged pair. I wish I had dual voice coil subs so that I can utilize all the channels on my amp (and even time correct these), but this will do for now. The end results? No alternator whine whatsoever! The bass really hits hard now and it sounds wonderful. The time correction is really, really nice. The head unit allows you to store something like 6 settings so I can set one for when I'm only in the car, when someone is in the car with me, when I want to be nice and let the passenger hear how it sounds when it's optimally tuned for him/her, etc. Chester =====

Date: Fri, 7 Feb 2003 07:55:06 EST From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] Re: Adding Redline water wetter to the cooling system I stopped using water wetter this past summer when I noticed brown "gummy balls" floating in the overflow tank. There was enough of it to make it hard to see the FULL line on the side of the tank. I was worried the water wetter was precipitating the lubricating additives in the coolant. With all the concerns over water pumps, I did not want to experience this. I got them out using a screwdriver, they stuck to it. Has anyone else seen these "gummy balls" when using water wetter? I was told it's a reaction with the BMW coolant. If so, what kind of reaction? Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion '97 & '00 BSP Champion '01 & '02

If I had it to do over again, I'd opt for DA's all around. The DA's are better valved, and I just love having the flexibility to control bump as well as rebound. For the rear, it's a no brainer IMO, beats taking the shock off. There are nine bump settings for the rears, believe me, past six and you might as well install a metal rod instead of a shock ;-)) Can't remember the difference I paid. Bought mine from Bob T. and Jim L. at Bimmerhaus. I know shameless plug, but a happy customer (during and after the sale).
