I haven't heard of a factory alarm with a timer to automatically annoy the neighbors. So I suspect a co-factor, something loud and/or jarring that runs on a schedule. Train? Plane? Bus? Garbage truck? Late-working neighbor with no manners and a loud car stereo or bad parallel parking skills? A manual for the factory E36/Z3 BMW alarm sold at US BMW dealers (not sure if "System 3" is another name for the same part, or different) is here: http://www.circlebmw.com/service/access/82111469444.htm Remove panel under glove compartment (assuming stock location), flip DIP switches to reduce glass breakage microphone sensitivity, replace panel. If you have a different alarm with no sensitivty controls, try duct tape over the microphone. -- David Ripton dripton@ripton.net

It is the piece that you control horizontal and vertical air deflection with. It appears that this is an individual piece that can be replaced. Anyone had to do this? Where can I order this piece or does anyone have a part # from the IPB. Ed Frank 97 M3/4

Early E36 alarms came with an overly sensitive glass breakage setting. It can be adjusted - consult your dealer. Neil 96 M3

That's nice, however, I can personally vouch for Peter Guagenti, as can several other members of this list. Unless the person that gave him the tickets got them through illegitimate means, those tickets were for real. Scott

The 400# rear spring isn't all that much stiffer than stock. I think the stock springs are 335 max or something, but they're progressive, so they do feel softer initially. I have simple old Eibach linear coilover springs, so they're 400# all the way through. I may try a stiffer spring rate all around this season, but keep a similar ratio - maybe 450 rears and 500 or 525 fronts. I agree, the higher bump settings on the DA Koni's are way stiff. Not really usable for autox. I typically run 2-4 clicks in the front and 4-7 clicks on the rear. The higher rear settings, say above 9 clicks, are very stiff. If I ever encounter a really tight, nasty, first gear course, I'll crank it up in the 8-10 range and try to rally car my way through the course. Tranny does not need to be replaced to fix it, but BMW won't allow techs to touch anything in trannies. If you have warranty, it is easier to let the dealer replace the tranny. Otherwise an indpendent tech (or yourself) can lube a spring/plunger/e-clip part. My reverse gear and 5th gear are ever so slightly sticky, but nothing that is worrying me at 80,000 miles. '98 and '99s have the ZF 320Z tranny, all others use the ZF 310Z tranny. 320Z seems to be more sensitive to the sticking issue and they end up losing the 5th gear gate entirely (spring gets compressed by the plunger... plunger gets caught and you end up with no "gate"). -Justin -- '76 02 '97 m3 bmw cca checkout http://users.vei.net/jgerry

My 5th gear was about the only thing left in the tranny :) I never experienced the sticking issue, my transmission completely failed (http://m3.digital7.com/shifter) They did not say exactly what went wrong with it. I wonder if they replaced it with the 310 or the 320? I'll find out when I get it up on a lift. How can I identify between the two?
