Spoilers, as opposed to wings like the LTW unit, are usually used to create delamination; that is, they cause smooth laminar airflow to go turbulent over the spoiler's edge. Sometimes this is done because there's unstable, buffeting air over the rear (the mini spoiler on the later Taurus), or because the turbulence can (on some cars, in some cases) reduce drag. Anyone want to hazard a guess on whether the lip spoiler might reduce drag a bit? I suppose the real test is to tape yarn all over the back and videotape the car being driven at various speeds, like in "How To Make Your Car Handle." A related topic: the stock M3 has little wedges in front of the front tires, which most of us remove when installing the JTD underpanel. I've wondered whether those really do anything, any opinions? How about the tiny mudflaps in front of the rear tires that crack and fall off with age? just idle curiousity. andy r.

Can't help much with data overload, however. There were some improvements in '99 I think, nothing major. The early cars '97-'98 are a little bit lighter, which is not a bad thing. So if you really feel you need 4-doors but are not quite ready to give up on the M3 fun, why not look at a '97-'98 M3/4 instead? I've driven a few 5 series cars and they are a far cry from a M3. M3 is a sports car, E39 is a good sized sedan - performs and handles quite well for a sedan, but it's no M3. Just a thought. On the bottom of most M3 front spoilers is a black rubber/plastic "lip". It is missing on the M3 that I purchased today. Does anyone know of an affordable way to replace this? __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Shopping - Send Flowers for Valentine's Day http://shopping.yahoo.com

#4. E46 M3 brake swap? - from Juan Bruce

Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 19:13:15 -0800 From: "Juan Bruce" <jbrucebmw@hotmail.com> Subject: E46 M3 brake swap? I have to rebuild one of my front calipers. In order to minimize downtime I have been keeping my eye out for another set of calipers so I can just swap them. Then today I came across a set or E46 calipers brackets and rotors for $350. Does anyone know if its possible to retrofit these to an E36? They didn't have that front lip. They also had a different front grill, painted body color. I think two horizontal pieces, and two vertical ones. Plus some wood inside. See: http://www.understeer.com and click on the lip spoiler section, and you are good to go. Chris 97 M3/4 No luxury package on mine.... ----- Original Message ----- > Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 19:21:49 -0800 (PST) > From: Hunt Hodgetts <hhodgetts@yahoo.com> > Subject: Front Spoiler Question > > I purchased a 97 M3 Coupe today. #7. Coupe window rattle - from Chip Mitchell

Date: Thu, 13 Feb 2003 08:02:19 -0500 From: "Chip Mitchell" <chipm@arches.uga.edu> Subject: Coupe window rattle Hey everyone, The driver's window in my '95 coupe has started to rattle. From what I can tell, the rattle comes from the top where the window meets the roof. Everything appears to be aligned correctly, and the auto up/down works fine when I shut the door. The rattle will go away if I lower the window slightly, but comes back as soon as I close it. It looks like the top edge of the window may not be pressing against the gasket tightly enough to control vibration, and I notice the adjustment procedure on Suzy's site (http://www.bmw-m.net/TechProc/adjustwindow.htm) includes instructions for adjusting this "preload" in section D. Since I'm sure there is a chance of breaking the window if it isn't adjusted correctly, does anyone have tips or experience to offer before I try to tackle this one? Thanks, ChipM

This problem is the single biggest pain that's preventing me from buttoning up my car. I don't you can break the window...it'd be very, very hard. I tried all those adjustment mechanisms and it doesn't look like I can get the window to tilt in enough (at least on the new door). #9. Service II and steering questions - from Luis Rueda

I have a 11/95 production car and I was wondering which fuel filter do I need to order (I believe that earlier model E36's used a different fuel filter). Does anybody have handy the part# for the microfilter? What's the recommended sparl plug for an E36 M3? I've noticed that I can move my steering column up & down just a bit when I hold the steering wheel, it seems that the bolts that hold the steering column (under the dash) may be a bit loose. How difficult is it to get to these and has anybody had anything like this happen to their E36?. TIA, Luis

Did the code indicate a specific O2 sensor, or did it more generally indicate that one of the sensors was foul? I recently had my convertor replaced under warranty, due to a loose heat shield...yes, a loose shield and voila, a new cat. With the new cat, I think a new O2 sensor or 2 would have been installed, assuming that there's one or more pre/post cat. Grant Chicago 98 M3/4...powered by Dinan
