Having the oil light come on is a VERY BAD thing and engine damage can happen very quickly. You cannot ignore it as you have apparently done. I can't imagine your engine *not* being damaged from multiple instances of your oil light being on for 10-15 seconds. You don't mention anything about whether you checked the oil level and where it was at. I'm guessing it's low. There are remedies to the high-G oil starvation problem such as running with an extra quart, using a baffled pan, or adding an oil pickup - but unless your suspension is modified and you're running r-compound tires, no amount of cornering is going to make your light come on unless your oil is low or you have an oil pump issue. Regardless, stop taking the turns so fast until you fix it. - Bill

For me, that's about a quarter-inch pass the FULL mark on my dipstick. If that doesn't work, it's something else, or you're really fast in those interstate loops. As for damage, I'd say that 10 seconds is about equivalent to starting your engine first thing in the morning, but I'm no expert. Yes, absolutely... potentially very serious damage! > Is there a fix to the problem? How often do you check your oil level? Seriously, these cars need to be run at the full mark or up to a quart over for any kind of spirited driving. You can overfill by 1/2 to 1 quart and see if the problem persists, but I'd check out some other things as well. Did you buy your car new or used? Some people have installed higher than stock (7 psi) oil pressure senders as cheap insurance for track days so the idiot light comes on at say 20 psi. If you have a non-stock sender, it will be a non-BMW part # since they do not make 20 or 30 psi senders. It's rare on street tires to generate the Gs needed to drop the pressure all the way down below 7 psi. I've never seen it on the street on my modified car and I drive it like I stole it <g>. There is a possibility that your pressure is only dropping to say 15 psi and you have a faulty or aftermarket pressure sender. However, if you really are dropping to 7 psi and below for 10-15 seconds you could be destroying your motor, so you need to figure out what's up. If you really do have oil starvation there are several fixes; most are expensive: replace the stock oil pan with the LTW pan which has dual pickups, install a baffled pan, install an Accusump, overfill the oil, or stop taking extended high-g turns. I would probably start by checking the oil level, overfilling, and replacing the pressure sender. If that doesn't work, or if you track the car frequently, I'd consider one of the more expensive fixes. -- Ron Katona

I'm planning to change to Mobil 1 in the spring because I've had good luck with their engine oil and in the differential. BTW: As others have said, "who's lifetime???" An electrical contact cleaner/lubricant would be a better choice. It's recommended use is as a mechanical lubricant/penetrant, and it also displaces moisture. But they advise against using it with electrical contacts, because a spark can ignite it. They would whistle at 50 mph. I adjusted them once and never heard it again. I think, like you noticed that the whistle is coming from the gap at the top. Have you checked your oil level recently? This is the practical fix; the other one is to install the semi-dry sump system found on the M3 lightweight and european-spec 3.2 litre. but that's going to cost you upwards of $2k for parts and labor.
