Internal, no pump removal AFAIK. And BTW, this problem is a general E36 and E46 issue, not restricted to '98 M3s. I lost the oil pump nut on the 325is race car, I know of an E46 330 that had the same (and my M3 has had the nut locktite-d even though it's retired from the track). When you're poking around with screwdrivers and dental picks, make sure you don't scratch the shaft or the seat for the seal. When you tap in the seal. make sure you're dead square. If it goes in crooked, it will leak, forcing you to repeat the whole project. Tap and check as you go. Once the seal is too far in, it's going to be tough to retrieve it to try to reset it without damaging it. It's also a good idea to replace the selector joint while you're in there (Don't recall the formal part name) You can build up slop in the shift linkage. #7. E36 M3 Power Steering Hose Fix - from Andrew E. Kalman
Top
Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 14:04:45 -0800 From: "Andrew E. Kalman" <aek@pumpkininc.com> Subject: E36 M3 Power Steering Hose Fix Hi All. Peter Guagenti's recent post and picture (http://www.guagenti.com/M3/Power_Steering.jpg) in preparation for the OTC got me thinking about my situation ... Like those in Margaret Cheng's M3, but not quite as severe, my power steering hoses are causing problems both at the reservoir and at the end of the cooler. I was going to simply replace them with new parts (I'm already using "conventional" hose clamps at the reservoir), but they would probably eventually fail, too. Since I already had a new set of hose assemblies and a new reservoir on hand (plus new sealing rings, nice German/BMW hose clamps, etc), I figured I might as well have someone put longer hoses on the two assemblies. I found a place in Santa Clara (SF bay area), Bay Area Hose & Fittings, 3435 De La Cruz Blvd, 408-748-2100, and had them put new hoses on, 8" longer than stock, properly crimped with one of those fancy hydraulic-line crimping machines. They did this in less than 24 hours, using a very high-quality hose, and they even installed the restrictor from the old hose onto the new return line. They used SAE (not metric) sizes, and I was initially concerned about this, but they go on and off the reservoir just fine. I will be swapping out the old hoses and reservoir for this new set on Thursday, and by then should know what the right length is (+2"? +3"? over stock) and will report back. Hopefully with some pictures, too. -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

I would like to point you to a couple of companies that are currently hiring. I happen to know people at these companies (not enough to guarantee you a job, but I can answer those fun questions and most likely point you to the right contacts...). www.bscupdate.com -- Bechtel SAIC LLC www.bechtelnevada.com -- Bechtel Nevada LLC Both are under contract with the US Department of Energy here in Las Vegas (for different projects). Both are hiring now. Please just reply to the specific job postings as instructed on the website. If you want the inside story of what it's like to work for either of them, or the Vegas lifestyle, I can help there too. Contrary to popular belief, Sin City is a nickname, not a lifestyle (unless you want it to be, of course!). If you are an experienced structural engineer with experience with large objects (think 50 tonnes and up) and dynamic loads (seismic analyses experience a BIG plus), please let me know ASAP. Please email me directly in order to avoid list congestion. Cheers, Kirk Lachman Sin City Chapter '95 M3 #21 I-stock klchmn@aol.com
