Is there a timing cover > on the tranny bell housing that I can remove to take a > peek at the flywheel? There isn't on mine (95 M3). On my car you definitely need to remove the tranny to inspect the flywheel. The good news is that it isn't too bad of a job on jackstands with the right transmission jack. I got a bottle screw type from Harbour Freight for something close to $75. It's an all weekend job, but it's do-able if you have all of the parts. I bought the clutch replacement kit from bavauto.com, don't remeber how much it was. If you are doing the transmission seals at the same time (They're included in the kit), I would highly recomend that you buy the tool used to install the input shaft seal. I removed my transmission 4 times this past winter because I didn't want to spend the $80 to purchase the tool. Other people have said that they were able to replace this seal without by using pipes and/or sockets. I tried everything that I could think of. The only thing that worked was the BMW tool. The Bentley manual has all of the procedures and there is some other stuff you should do WYAIT like Guibo and driveshaft bearing, I also did the clutch slave cylinder. It's also a good time to do a SSK, if you are so inclined. Regards Jamie Howton 2002 330i 5 Spd Steel Blue Metallic SP 1995 M3 5 Spd Arctic Silver 1979 Porsche 928 5 Speed Opalmetallic

#3. Dead car - dead starter? - from Seth Frader-Thompson

Date: Sun, 6 Apr 2003 19:33:46 -0400 From: "Seth Frader-Thompson" <fraderth@colorado.edu> Subject: Dead car - dead starter? Hi folks - I need some help. My car is dead. The electrics and stereo come on normally with the key, but that's it. Doesn't turn over, click, or do anything. The battery has a good charge and is solidly connected, and the fuses are okay. Yes, the clutch was in. Is the starter dead? Any other possible causes? I'm trying to decide whether to have it towed to an independent shop or the dealer. Can't really think of any reason to go to the dealer unless it's an EWS thing or something. Thanks, Seth

The EWS chip on the keys sometimes just dies. If that's the case, you'll need to order a new master key. -Bobby ----- Original Message ----- From: "Seth Frader-Thompson" <fraderth@colorado.edu> > > Hi folks - I need some help. > > My car is dead. I know 2 people with Turbo charged M3s producing near 500 HP in daily drivers with out reliability problems. I personally watched one of them battling with a 996 GT3 factory race car at Sebring. in Reference to the driveshaft issue I would venture to say that these are people that are drag racing the cars and not "taking care" of there cars. Hell I broke a shaft in a 2002 driving like an idiot when I was 17 imagine what can happen with an extra 400 HP. Brian Jacobs 97 M3 98 318ti 88 XR4TI

You can probably pry the thin metal cover that goes on the back of the engine away enough to peek inside and tell if it is Al or steel. Anyone know the "rules" i.e. which build dates are the cutoffs? Quick search yeilded no results, so asking the list versus bothering the vendor. Thanks in advance, Eric M. E36 M3's pre 1/95 are compatible. So 1/95 is the magic build date. Before that only works with cars produced before, and after that works with any thing built then or after. e36m3digest@jedinite.com wrote: > Date: Mon, 07 Apr 2003 13:19:59 -0500 > From: "e36m3digest@jedinite.com" <e36m3digest@jedinite.com> > Subject: Conforti chip compatibility across build dates > > Anyone know the compatibility for a Conforti chip from a 12/95 build M3 > to a 4/95 build M3? #10. Repair shops in Bay Area - from david tow

Date: Mon, 07 Apr 2003 15:07:10 -0700 From: "david tow" <david_tow@hotmail.com> Subject: Repair shops in Bay Area Hi, all, My brother's 88 E30 325i unfortunately broke its timing belt, and he's out of a job. He has asked me to find a mechanic for him to fix the car, but he would want to get one that would charge very reasonably. He is planning to have the car fixed and sell it, since he cannot afford to keep it any longer. Sad story. I've got some recommendations for the following two shops: Rennwerks and Import Connection. Any other shops you could recommend? My brother is even open for ideas such as taking the car to an unlicensed mechanic's as long as he/she wants the stuff. Mechanically he's good enough to help out. He helped me with my brake job last time. Thank you! _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus
