ES100's are good in the rain, come in the right size (unlike MX's) and most importantly, are exactly what doctor ordered: cheap street tires to save the cash for track rubber. Vern, If you want long lasting moderate grippy track tires, forget about noisy POS Yoko's and get $150/wheel Toyo RA1's. Perfect size, similar in grip to old VictoRacers, last forever (in my case 2 DEs, 10 autoXs and 7K street miles). More importantly, quiet on the street (other then marble wheel well chatter) and fantastic in the rain with at least 1/2 of the tread. Obviously not as quick as HoHo's, but then one set works both on track and on an autoX course. Old Michelin Pilots (loved them on the wife's car before the MXs) are now on sale at $166/each at TR. Great deal on very competent and ultimately quiet street/rain tires. MX's are not bad either (on my wife's E36), but they do not come in 235/40-17 size. 245/40-17s are a bit too tall and too wide for 7.5" wheels, but fit and work great on 17x8+ ones. Almost as grippy as Pilot Sports on dry, great in the rain. Inexpensive ($138?). Undermined longevity. BTW, what's the deal with Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires? I though they had just recently come out and are already on close-out sale at TR!? alex f "James Clay" <james@bimmerworld.com> wrote: > > Everyone has opinions here and I know it adds clutter to the list, but > I will toss mine into the ring. Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 13:07:56 EDT From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: cat shields buzzing - Dealer visit today Group, Took the car over to the Dealer this morning, armed with my email replies. Service Advisor says, 'yep...sure hear the buzz, let me get the mechanic'. Mechanic reaches under car, tugs on the cat shields and says, 'yep...those are buzzing cats all right'. Service Advisor says, 'can't we crimp the ends to quite them down'. Mechanic says, 'let's replace them under warranty...just like the others'. Service Advisor: OK, I'll order the cat section and schedule the work for next Friday. Me: YES!!!!! Thanks to everyone that replied. BMP list that section for $599. This list rocks as usual. Despite not using the now-fashionable V-groove pattern, Michelin claims a 4 second per lap (for roughly 100 sec laps on a 1.9 km course) improvement in the wet compared with the previous Pilot Sport design. Devotees of Franglais may be amused to note a menu item on the site entitled "Les Goodies." Neil 96 M3

Too bad they don't make a 245/40r17. I've found tha Azenis in 225/45r17 is stickier than most street tires, I would say that the grip is higher than a 245/40r17 S-03. And they're cheap! Definitely my next street tire. The Yoks are incredibly noisy, they make this amazing howl that reminds me of when I was a kid and we accidentally got our duck motion sick by putting it in the basket of my bike and doing jumps off a little ramp. Not a big issue on the street, and ok for auto-x where you can cool it off between runs, but it makes it pretty useless as a track tire. -----Original Message----- From: Kit Wetzler [mailto:kitwetzler@mindspring.com] Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2003 10:56 AM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] yoko A032SNORRRRE Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 10:48:17 -0700 From: "Kit Wetzler" <kitwetzler@mindspring.com> Subject: yoko A032SNORRRRE I've run the Yoks... interestingly enough I don't think they grip a whole lot better than Falken Azenis Sports! I've driven both on the track (sorry if I wasn't clear, I've never used them as street tires, but I have done a few track events on them on my car). The Azenis is very close in performance. The Azenis at full depth is going to get squirmy if you get it hot, because it's molded at a much deeper tread depth than your average R compound. Get a few thousand miles on them, and heat cycle them accordingly and they are great on the track. Better than any other street tire! -kit

The solution for auto-x is to squirt them with water between runs to cool them off. This is especially bad here in SoCal where the black asphalt can get well over 100 degrees in the summer. I have not had them on the track... -----Original Message----- From: Kit Wetzler [mailto:kitwetzler@mindspring.com] Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2003 11:15 AM To: Robert Puertas; 'E36M3' Subject: Re: [E36M3] yoko A032SNORRRRE > The only caveat with the Azenis Sport is that it gets a bit greasy > when it gets hot. This guy with a 540i passed me like I was standing still! I went up to him afterwards to check out what tires he had...and those were it. Totally blew my mind. Of course, I found out that he had a supercharger tucked in under the hood.
