I think mine was bought in 5/95...:) I believe warranties are always from the date of purchase. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Greg responds: I *think* you are wrong - I remember researching this when I bought my 98 in November 2001. Turns out it had a build date of November 97 and the four-year original warranty ran out a week after I bought the car, according to the docs I found. Greg - Are you saying you purchased a _brand new_ 1998 M3 in November 2001? And the warranty had already expired? Was this a CPO car maybe? Kim Burgess

#2. Tire Question - from Brad Ahrens

I like everything about them except the wear which was I guess to be somewhat expected with the grip. I just rotated the rears to the front and they look half gone at 5-6k miles. This is with relatively calm driving, 2 deg camber in back and a very slight inboard toe. I'm prob going to be lucky to get 12k out of them? Could be wrong and be closer to 15 all said and done but we will see... Also keep in mind they start out with 9/32 of tread instead of your usual 10/32s on many tires. Happy with everything else though and for the price might go there again. Prob going to try out the ES100 and/or Toyo T1-S for comparison purposes though. #3. Butt Dyno Graph: UUC Lt.Wt. Flywheel - from Steve Klein

Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 14:40:13 -0700 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: Butt Dyno Graph: UUC Lt.Wt. Flywheel I've been the happy owner of UUC's 11lb. 'Classic' flywheel for 36 hours and the difference between the car is incredible. Even with the motor needing some top end TLC, it's quite the fire breather. In 1st and 2nd most notably, and even in 5th, when the torque comes in strong around 3k rpm, the car feels like it's lost several hundred pounds. Driving aggressively in 1st and 2nd, I've managed to wear down the wear bars on what remains of my faithfull MXX3's. To that end, I've got a set of the Eagle F1's coming in shortly, so I'll have (hopefully) useful input in a while. I've definitely got the idle chatter symptom, but my shop has always used Valvoline products, so I'm going to try the Royal Purple Synchromax first to see what happens. It is very quiet when cold, and it's only after long drives or rush hour when the gearbox gets a good workout that it becomes quite chatty. They also replaced a weeping 'shift shaft seal' so I could be a little low on tranny fluid to begin with. The other weird thing is that the clutch pedal felt like a feather (Sachs M3 repalcement kit) and I had to spend a few moments convincing myself that the hydraulics were fine before I put it in gear. It took a lot of getting used to. The engagement point is also right at the top of the pedal travel (which I like much better) but I have to make a new clutch stop since my first was too short. I guess my only question right now is where can I get the Synchromax? I thought I had a bookmark for a list-popular source, but I can't seem to find it. Thanks for listening, Steve

#6. I'm thinking about switching teams..... - from Wayne Miller

Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 15:58:42 -0400 From: "Wayne Miller" <m3@waynemiller.com> Subject: I'm thinking about switching teams..... This is something that I have been considering every once-in-a-while. I have had these feelings that I just couldn't control and I read all kinds of opinions but yesterday I decided to take charge and I bought a Passport 8500. For years, I have been a V1 guy once it replaced my old Escort Solo and the Passport before that and even the original Escort before that. What brought about this decision you may ask? I used to have a Blinder M-10 laser jammer in my E36M3 and I think that it worked but it was lost in the accident. I bought a new Blinder M-10 for my E46M3 but in reading some reviews, I found that the Lidatek one worked better. I was all set to buy the Lidatek but then I found the Escort Laser Shifter ZR-3. It got excellent reviews and I liked the features so I went that route. One of the key features is that it ties in with the Passport 8500 so everything can be seen on the screen and that pushed me over the edge. Sure the totally remote Passport SRX is much nicer but it is $1500 installed and that is too much for me. This combination works out to a little over $600 for everything and I can't wait to try it out. I managed to have my girlfriend buy the Passport 8500 for me as a birthday present so I think that I will have to keep it and pretend to like it even if I don't ;-) I read up on various boards and V1 vs. Passport 8500 is like arguing about religion....or tires. I will probably try both out at the same time and I will report back so I guess that during this time, I will be going both ways??? -Wayne

#8. More tire babble...... - from Vern Anderson

Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 16:14:14 -0400 From: "Vern Anderson" <vernon_anderson@yahoo.com> Subject: More tire babble...... I'd love to try the Toyo's, what's the best source? In all of the track events I've been to, I've only seen a few of these ever; are they a controlled substance or something? Who in the h*ll sells these mystery tires?? I always hear great things about them.... I've never tried the Azeenahs. For street tires I run whatever I can get for under $90/tire - Yoko AVS, Dunlop Sport W-10's, whatever - as long as it's black, round, holds air, moves a little water and is at least V+ rated, it works for me. As far as the other replies about the Yoko's - here are some other thoughts: - never autocross on them, they take at least a lap to heat up on the track and they don't like high slip angles, so I'm guessing they would totally suck at autox - They will get greasy if you run too much pressure in them - I keep them under 37 lbs hot (usually start at 26-28 cold, sometimes 24-25 if it's really cold outside) - My car exhaust and suspension seem to effectively drown out the Yoko howl at track speeds, but I would never drive them on the street without earplugs - I've found the Yoko's don't get any greasier than Hoosiers, but they take longer to cool off. If I find myself overcooking a Hoosier, I can back off a few seconds and it will come back to me within a lap or so, but the Yoko's seem to stay hot for several laps. I'm just about out of Yoko's, I was going to try the Kumho Ecsta700's, but maybe I'll try to get my hands on a set of Toyo's instead. Vern - just trying to keep the tire war thread alive and well <g> -------------------- 1 -------------------- Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 11:57:20 -0500 From: alex.fadeev@verizon.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] Re: M3 tire recommendations What James said. ES100's are good in the rain, come in the right size (unlike MX's) and most importantly, are exactly what doctor ordered: cheap street tires to save the cash for track rubber. Vern, If you want long lasting moderate grippy track tires, forget about noisy POS Yoko's and get $150/wheel Toyo RA1's. Perfect size, similar in grip to old VictoRacers, last forever (in my case 2 DEs, 10 autoXs and 7K street miles). More importantly, quiet on the street (other then marble wheel well chatter) and fantastic in the rain with at least 1/2 of the tread. Obviously not as quick as HoHo's, but then one set works both on track and on an autoX course.

Do whatever you want, Wayne.. the rest of us can't live without the arrows! :) I've known too many people who went 8500 to V1, or V1 to 8500, back to V1.. Then again, after 3 laser tickets in one year in Washington.... maybe a Blinder or 8500 w/shifter wouldn't be a bad idea. I always hear great things about them.... Check at http://www.toyo.com/, look for a local dealer. Also, folks have mentioned Vilven(?) Tire as having good prices and they ship, but I've not used them. There's several local (SF Bay Area) places that I get them from. >I'm just about out of Yoko's, I was going to try the Kumho Ecsta700's, Unless they've fixed them, these are POS tires. IMO, of course, but I had *2* sets that were crap (I don't fooled a 3rd time :-)). >but >maybe I'll try to get my hands on a set of Toyo's instead. Recommended. IMO, they are a great drivers school/lapping day tire. I'm even running a set on the race car for non-points races and lapping days. I ran them exclusively on the M3 for drivers schools as well.
