#1. OZ Superleggera wheels - from Newman, Christopher

Date: Fri, 25 Apr 2003 16:21:16 -0400 From: "Newman, Christopher" <CNewman@LSAC.org> Subject: OZ Superleggera wheels I'm considering 17 inch OZ Superleggeras as a second set of wheels for my 1996 M3. It seems they only come in 17 X 8 (as opposed to the 17 X 7.5 front and 17 X 8.5 rear stock set up). Is the extra half inch width in front going to cause any clearance/rubbing issues ? Is the loss of a half inch in back going to leave me under-tired and with a gap between the tire and fender ? I would guess not since I believe the 95 M3's had 17 X 7.5's for all four wheels. With 17 X 8's for all four wheels, will any type of spacers be required ? Finally, I believe the 95 M3's came with 235/40-17 tires. Would this size still be appropriate for a 17 X 8 wheel ? Any comments on these questions, as well as the OZ Superleggeras in general, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I run for TSW Trophy wheels on the street that are 17x8. They are 38mm offset, so no spacer required front or rear. Sure, the back isn't quite as large as stock, but it works fine. I use 245/40 tires, but the 235's would work fine also, and are probably a better match to an 8" wheel. The 235/40/17 Toyo RA-1's don't rub and the 235/45/17 (both Toyo and Pirelli) do a little on the front wheel liners. Similar wheels are good for the track or street as equal front/rear grip allows for neutral handling. Bonus that all can be rotated in each of the corners for optimal tire wear. The OZ Superleggera's are light (<17lbs.) and strong. We have found no quality issues on the street or on the track. I'm happy with the end result with the PWR, just not with what I had to go through to get there. Philosophically I'd also like to keep a main cooling fan of some sort, which now appears a more difficult proposition. I was considering replacing the late departed fan with the shallower one from a 318i, but it looks as if the fit to the viscous clutch is different. Of course I could buy the corresponding viscous clutch too, but it would be nice to retain the "free" one I already have. > You mentioned fabricating an oil cooler once - right? You probably don't need > an oil cooler now. That wasn't lost on me either. Naturally I already have the oil filter housing modified and ready - and paid for. So I will likely go ahead with the rest of the installation. I just have to figure out the inter-related questions of which oil radiator to get and how I want to mount it. Reasonable options seem to be: 1) Euro E36 M3 unit: rather small, expensive, desirable below-radiator mounting; 2) E46 M3 unit: a bit larger larger, expensive, possible below-radiator mounting; 3) Generic rectangular (Earl's; Fluidyne, Setrab): inexpensive, less desirable mounting in front of radiator. > The other revelation this shows is how marginal the stock radiator/cooling > system is. Neil - did you notice a change in the water temperature? What > were your before and after water temperature readings? I would expect a > large water temperature drop too. I imagine you're right, but my car only has the stock water temp gauge, and as we know it only deviates from centre if stone cold or way overheating. Therefore I can't tell what the actual coolant temp change might have been. > I think this larger, aluminum radiator might be worth pursuing afterall. > Especially if you track your M3 in hot weather (read Texas). I'm looking for an old image I haven't seen around for a long time. It was of a 4-door E36M3 with the front have being a green & white (I think) race-prepped car divided in the middle by some sort of electical burst/lighting and the back half was a red street car. I think it was once on the Evosport site before they revamped it and I'd seen it a couple other places, but can't remember where. Does anyone have a copy, of or link to, this image? #10. Sparco Evo2 Mounting Options? - from Jeremy Lucas
Top
Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2003 08:05:30 -0400 From: "Jeremy Lucas" <jlucas@columbus.rr.com> Subject: Sparco Evo2 Mounting Options? Subject says it all. If you've mounted up Evo2's in your car, I'd like to hear about and see pictures if you have them. Online or offline are both fine with me. I'm sure some of the questions posed below are true with all brands of shell mounting so feel free to chime in if you have some experience. I've tried some of the dual purpose seats like Recaro SRD, etc... but would rather not have the compromised lateral support compared to a full on shell. Some of the issues I'm looking for information on are: Did you manage to use sliders or just fixed mounts? Who's mounting plates/adapters did you use? Did you get the seat closer to the centerline of the wheel, like the TC Kline brkts allow you to do? Did you wire up a fix for the seat mat? (http://www.apexcone.com/Recaros/Recaros.html) Do you swap them in for track use and swap back out for the street? Do you feel the need for a tilt steering wheel when in the race seat (due to the lower seating position)? Where/how did you mount the anti sub strap (5th belt)? Anything else I'm missing? Thanks, Jeremy Lucas 95 M3
