#1. M-stripes on seats, a question? - from Mdriver13@aol.com

Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2003 09:24:47 EDT From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: M-stripes on seats, a question? I have a question for the M3 experts in the Group. There was once a thread about the leather interior in some Luxo model M3's that did not have the M stripes sewn on the seat cover backings. I seem to remember people saying they got a $500 check from the Dealer because of the M-stripes being omitted on these cars. Reason I ask is while I was at the Dealer recently, there was a Luxo car like mine there and it DID have the accent M-stripes on the seats, front and rear. If people were supposed to receive a rebate check, I never got one! It's never to late to pursue this in my opinion, if it's true that I should have received a refund check. Can anyone shed some light on this rather "trivial" subject? TIA. Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion '97 & '00 BSP Champion '01 & '02

Check to see if there are any repair shops in your arear that will work on the radio. Might not be able to find any. Our service tech won't usually work on factory stuff because he can't get schematics, technical assistance or parts. Also sounds like it could be a cracked circuit board or solder connection. When it's cold, the metal contracts. Might be time for a nice new in-dash CD player :-) Good luck - Jay At 03:26 PM 4/25/03 -0500, you wrote: >Date: Fri, 25 Apr 2003 16:21:25 -0400 >From: "Newman, Christopher" <CNewman@LSAC.org> >Subject: Intermittent Radio Reception > > > >> Good afternoon, >> I have a question concerning the stock stereo in a 1996 M3. >> >> Sometimes I will be listening to an FM station and then all of a sudden it >> will cut out. Not just Luxo models, but some of all M3s. They used "regular" seat leather (i.e. that used in non-M3 E36s, and had the M stripes placed on the headrests instead (personally, I like that better :-)). >I seem to >remember people saying they got a $500 check from the Dealer because of the >M-stripes being omitted on these cars. It wasn't an actual check, it was a $500 "leather credit" that was listed on the window sticker. Hence it was deducted from the purchase price. >Can anyone shed some light on this rather "trivial" subject? TIA. #7. Seat install in E36 M3 - from AVUSM3@aol.com
Top
Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2003 14:55:39 EDT From: AVUSM3@aol.com Subject: Seat install in E36 M3 Jeremy - I recently did a seat install in my '95 M3. I put in a set of Cobra Imolas which are very similar in size to the EVO2s. I used Cobra side brackets and universal sliders (with custom spacers - which are basically just donut shapes) to achieve some centering effect. It worked out great. I love the setup. Some would say that the seats are actually too low, but I put them in partially to get a racier feel, so that was perfect for me. There are several things to look for when installing them in an E36. The width of the seats becomes a problem if you don't install them low enough. If not, the "wings" on the upper part of the seats will dig into the top of the door panels. This is OK if it is a race car, but not for a street car. My seats are just low enough to avoid this issue. Did you wire up a fix for the seat mat? No - there are no mats in my car Do you swap them in for track use and swap back out for the street? No. I like them on the street and use a high quality memory foam pad for long street drives. Do you feel the need for a tilt steering wheel when in the race seat (due to the lower seating position)? No. My fit is excellent, but this can vary with your physique (arm length vs. leg length) Where/how did you mount the anti sub strap (5th belt)? 6pt mounted behind the front seat mounts. If you have any specific questions please feel free to give me a call: John Cloutier (603) 292-5500 Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2003 08:05:30 -0400 From: "Jeremy Lucas" <jlucas@columbus.rr.com> Subject: Sparco Evo2 Mounting Options? #8. Front Wheel Bearing Replacement Tips - from K. Bishop
Top
Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2003 15:30:57 -0500 From: "K. Bishop" <kbishop371@attbi.com> Subject: Front Wheel Bearing Replacement Tips I just finished replacing the front wheel bearings on my '98 M3/4 and thought I'd try to share a few small things from my experience rather than just lurking and keeping them to myself. As a reference for doing this I used both the guide in the Bentley book as well as the guide that can be found on the Unofficial BMW site (http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/suspension/e36_replace_front_wheelbearing. html). Both are accurate, but Bentley makes heavy use of special BMW tools. Unofficial BMW's uses more commonly available tools, is written clearly and includes illustrations from what looks like a factory service manual. OK, here are the things I learned along the way: - I had absolutely no problems removing the axle nut (a.k.a, BFN) with just a 24" breaker bar and 46mm socket. I didn't need any penetrating oil or air tools, just some muscle -- and I don't consider myself strong at all. Perhaps if the outer seal went bad you could have a situation where the nut might seize and be harder to get loose, but I had no problems. - Both approaches recommend lowering the car to the ground when loosening the BFN, presumably to keep from rocking the car off the jack stands. Not knowing how much trouble I'd have I thought I try before putting the wheels back on, etc... Before I knew it the nut came loose so the car stayed up on the jack stands. Clearly there's a safety issue here, so I won't recommend you skip this step like I did. This was just my experience. - I think a number of different puller styles will work to remove the hub / bearing assembly. I chose a 2/3-jaw puller from Sears and it worked great. The only problem with a hub puller that bolts into the lug holes like the special BMW tool is that if the inner bearing race comes apart -- as one of mine did -- you'll still need a 2- or 3-jaw puller to get the inner race off. So, if you're buying tools for this job, I'd recommend just getting the 2/3-jaw puller and leave it at that. - I found installing the inner dust seal a real pain. Both guides say you only need to replace it if it came off or is damaged. On my first wheel I decided to replace it just because I had the new one. Makes sense, right? Well, getting the old one off was annoying, but getting the new one on was painful. I think I could get another new one on quicker, but when I saw that everything was OK on the second wheel I left it alone. - Unofficial BMW describes how to install the new bearing without using the special BMW tools. I wasn't crazy about missing with my hammer and destroying my new $100+ hub assembly, so I used the BMW installation tool. With it the install took maybe two minutes a wheel and I didn't have to worry about being clumsy with a hammer. - Staking the new BFN took bigger "whacks" with a 4lb mini-sledge than I expected, but was easy to do. The staked nut on the second wheel looked about as good as the factory install. :-) - A 46mm socket is a good conversation piece. I'll also be trying it out as a paper weight because I'm not sure when I'll need it again! If you're thinking about doing this yourself, feel free to email me with any questions. It's really not much harder than changing brake pads and rotors although it does require so special tools. Kevin Bishop

#9. Mod day completed! - from DocWyte

Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2003 16:02:03 -0700 (PDT) From: DocWyte <josh_wyte@yahoo.com> Subject: Mod day completed! Well, today was a rather long day for me and the '95 M3. I installed the UUC stage 2 ltw flywheel with E34 M5 clutch set, new slave cylinder, new guibo, new rear diff fluid, new tranny fluid, engine oil change, flushed the brake fluid and installed the borla track pipe. Here are some initial impressions, but I haven't been able to fully ascertain things as it's raining pretty hard here. #1 UUC flywheel and M5 clutch set. WOW!! What a difference! The car seems much happier to rev now. I don't hear any tranny rattling at idle, car seems completely silent. My old clutch was toast. When we pulled off the tranny and pressure plate we left a small mountain of clutch disc dust on the floor of the shop. The old disc was almost completely worn out. Pedal feel is very nice, linear, not too heavy. I got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on the ride home and the clutch is very easy to modulate. No idle speed problems with the flywheel either. This is a no brainer if you need to replace your clutch. BUY ONE! #2 Not sure when the rear diff fluid was changed last, but it came out pitch black. It wasn't making any noise, but I feel better knowing it has fresh, clean fluid in it. Same thing with the tranny. #3 Brake fluid/slave cylinder flush. I bought one of those Motiv brake bleeders and can honestly say that it kicks total butt. Flushing the brakes has never been easier. No air was introduced to the system and as an added bonus I got 5+ big bubbles out of my left rear caliper. Brake feel has improved dramatically. I'm probably going to bleed them one more time before my first auto-x tho. I wasn't looking forward to bleeding the slave cylinder, but it turned out to be rather anti-climatic. I had a kinda hard time opening the bleeder valve due to the tight confines, but once I did, it barfed out it's air bubbles immediately and that was it. No problems with the clutch. #4 Borla race pipe. This was a snap install with the exception of the broken exhaust mani stud. Couldn't double nut it off, had to drill it out. Then the tap broke when trying to tap the new hole. So now it has a bolt and double nut on it. Oh well. The race pipe lined up perfectly. No issues there, Borla places the O2 sensor hole closer to the motor than stock, so I had to loop the extra wire around and tie it up out of the way. I'm running this with the stock rear muffler. Sound is good, a bit raspy, but very deep and menacing. There is a HUGE power increase up top with this and I can't feel any loss in the low end. It doesn't drone and if I'm just cruising on the freeway or down the street it sounds almost stock. A very nice mod. -josh ===== __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! (few months). receipt reads group 92 and total of $103 out the door. just thought I would mention as I didn't see it in the archives when I looked. Jason
