I'm not sure how the knock sensor will affect passing a smog check. Jim Bassett P.S. Yes Chester, knock sensors do go bad <g>. I replaced one on the race car. Afterwards, no more fault code. Not common, but possible.

#2. misc thoughts, learnings and musings from the last three years (v - from Michael, Dave

Date: Fri, 2 May 2003 14:54:13 -0600 From: "Michael, Dave" <Dave_Michael@maxtor.com> Subject: misc thoughts, learnings and musings from the last three years (v ery long!) I have been mostly a lurker for the past three years. I have found this list to be invaluable for hints both large and small. Over the years, I have learned a few things, some of which I think folks might find useful. So here are some few misc thoughts and learnings: Wiper blades: For the first year I had the car, the wipers left a 2" band of badly wiped glass right in the middle of the span of the blade (right "under" the "hook"). I bought new inserts etc, and nothing worked until I bought BMW inserts. It wasn't the insert itself that helped - it was the INSTRUCTIONS. The instructions pointed out the need to have the two metal insert strips BOWED OUTWARD so that the middle bulges towards the windshield. So I pre-bent the inserts before assembling the whole thing and voila, like magic, the wipers work! Cup Holders: like everyone else, I quickly discovered that they are in fact "cup ejectors". After a few coffee-cup-in-the-lap landings, I decided to do something about it. I popped the cup holder out, and using a hack saw, cut most of the thing off just above the ridge/step that is 2/3 of the way up from the bottom of the cup holder. Now any of the 4 thermos like mugs I have sits IN the cup holder instead of ON it. It's not quite elegant, since there is now a big hole in the bottom of the cup holder. But the nice think is that you can buy a new one for not a lot of $ and snap it in of you decide you don't like the look of the hole. I have thought of fabricating a flexible cloth or plastic filler, but that's probably as far as I will get. Braided SS Lines: I have tried TWO different sets/brands of SS lines and did not use either one. The 1st did not fit because one of the two rear lines was too short. The 2nd I not like because the female furrel was too short, which left too little of the 17 mm wrench flats exposed "below" the bracket in the fender well to remove them after 1 winter. But the important part is what I learned is about disconnecting the hard lines from the old rubber lines. In short, buy the BEST flare nut wrench you can. Craftsman is NOT good enough. After rounding a fitting with a craftsman, I ordered a Snap-On (from the factory web-site). It made all the difference in world (along with lots of penetrating oil). The rounded nut? I loosened it with the very slick 3-point vice-grip that clamps on 3 nut flats. There are 3 sizes - I used the smallest one. Windshields: Getting a new windshield installed can be very cheep. I have had one done a few years ago for under $200 (ppg glass). And I just discovered that the yutz who did the installation messed up the paint around the windshield - I had to install a new wiper linkage mechanism a few weeks ago. After removing the wiper blades and cowling cover, I was horrified to find moderate amounts of RUST just at the base of the windshield. The rust was all emanating from a thin line, clearly made by a slasher knife. Looks like the installer used one to remove the adhesive after the 1st windshield was removed. I spent several hours scraping and then repainting with that expensive urethane anti-rust paint. Still, yuck. Wiper linkage: For some odd reason, one of the wiper shafts seized, and caused one of the fixed struts in the linkage to BREAK. So I had to remove the linkage/drive assy. WHAT A PAIN. I followed the Bentley, but there is STILL almost no way to maneuver the thing out past the wiring harness. Its like one of those gag puzzles where one has to separate two intertwined pieces of wire. One BIG (not in the Bentley) help is to disconnect the harness from the ECU and pull the harness away from the firewall

True, but I was suggesting to check the connections before even thinking about replacing it. Chester =====

For those of you wishing to buy european ellipsoids......umnitza inc is going to be running a group buy shortly with prices below $400. I'm not sure exactly what prices he'll have, but you CAN get them without angel eyes and you CAN get them without HIDs. you can also get a plug and play connector for $25.....no splicing, just plug them in and you're in business. Hope this helps Ben
