#1. FS: Used front and rear movit big brake kit - from Chester Wong

Date: Sun, 4 May 2003 16:40:17 -0700 (PDT) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: FS: Used front and rear movit big brake kit So I've finally given up trying to get these brakes to work well on my car. I bought these brakes from a list member who used them on his race car and also bought them from another list member. So I believe I'm the third owner. When I originally received the brakes, the pads had strange wear on them...ramped from outer diameter of the rotor to the inner diameter. Closer inspection revealed that the machining done to the caliper (I assume by Movit) was not perfectly square to the pistons so the calipers had a somewhat toe-out condition if you will. I guess once a caliper is machined originally from the factory that rejigging it to machine perfectly might be hard to do. So I brought the brackets to a machine shop to cut a slight 1 degree ramp in them to counter the ramp of the caliper. End result is much, much closer to perfectly straight where the pads do not have odd wear. The next problem is rotor runout. It's been said that when you upgrade to big brakes that you should replace your front wheel bearings for some unknown reason. I did this and even had the rotor recut. Despite all my attempts, I always had shimmy in the steering wheel....even to the point where the vibration make my lugbolts back out and the wheel wobble around at a driver school at Watkins Glen! Luckily I caught it in time and brought it back into the paddock. It seems to me that the hats of the Movits do no correctly mate to the hubs. I see this because when I start torquing down the lugbolts, they can easily be made to be torqued unevenly meaning it feels like the bolts can continue to be tightened on and on as you go around in a star pattern. What this has lead to is a step up torquing from 20 ft-lbs to 40 ft-lbs eventually all the way up to 80 ft lbs. I suspect that the machining around the area of the hubcentric part of the hub is incorrect and prevents the hat from sitting flush against the hub. I want to disclose this because I cannot sell this kit with warm fuzzies if I didn't. Anyway this is what is included: - Front Movit big brake kit (322x32mm) -- Red 993 Twin Turbo calipers with custom machining from Movit -- adapter brackets with a 1 degree ramp cut into it -- One set of really used rotors (these were used on the race car as well as my car after being recut...they are probably not worth using but the hats can be salvaged) -- One set of used rotors with only two track days on them (these were new though I don't know when they were bought and I thought maybe the old hats were defective and I gave these a try...still the same problem) -- 2 sets of Fischer stainless steel braided lines -- One set of Porsche OE street pads with 3/4 material left -- One set of Pagid Orange race pads with 3/4 material left -- Rebuilt (over $200) with new seals and pistons before the two day track school - Rear Movit Big Brake kit (299x24mm) -- Red Boxster S calipers straight from the Porsche parts bin...no machining -- Adapter brackets -- One set of used rotors that were on the race car and on my car after being recut -- One set of brand new rotors -- 2 sets of Fischer stainless steel braided lines -- One set of Porsche OE street pads with 3/4 material left -- One set of Pagid Orange race pads with 3/4 material left -- One set of Pagid Black race pads with > 1/2 material left -- One set of new Pagid Black race pads The rears have had no issues since there was no machining done to the calipers and the rotors are a sraightforward fit. Serious offers only. Thanks, Chester =====

#2. Soft Brakes - from Patrick Dargan

He changed MC's twice and replaced both calipers and the flex-lines trying to figure out why the pedal was soft. He hit the calipers with a dead-blow hammer while bleeding, and the pedal was still soft. Finally, after working on this one car for well over 6 hours (therefore he was now working for FREE), he asked the shop owner for help. The owner says "remove the calipers without disconnecting the brake lines, shake them, the bleed them with the bleed screw pointing up (so the fluid waste hole is pointing straight up, not horizontal). This is a two person operation. Sure enough, he got more air out of the system and upon replacing the calipers the pedal was now very firm. Might help, might not, but if you got more time than money, it's free to check it out..." _____________________ This sounded good to me, so I thought I'd try it. Seems to have worked really well!! BUT, if you do when using a pressure bleeder, remember that the caliper piston can be pressured out , so clamp it after your remove the caliper!!

Date: Mon, 05 May 2003 01:15:45 +0000 From: kim.burgess@att.net Subject: Re: shark injector question Bob - I had a 97 M3/2, purchased in Jan 98. On one service occasion there was a re-write of my ECU software due to an emissions recall related to the ECU software. So it is possible that you got an ECU overwrite (do to the recall if you have not been back to the dealer since mid-97?), but it would not have occured as result of a 'reset' of the service lights. As the 'fuel vapor tank' is an emissions device (I believe) they should replace it as well? Kim Burgess 99M3/2 Bob Gill mentioned: "While I was at the dealer Friday, I noticed they cleared my "Check Engine" light (it comes on every so often because of a small crack in the fuel vapor tank). Will this delete being sharked? Do I need to reinstall the program, or is it still there?" Jim responded with: "If all they did was clear the CE light, then you should still be Sharked. Date: Sun, 4 May 2003 22:00:08 EDT From: Msebmwman@aol.com Subject: Fog light moisture: bad or not? How do I get rid of? One of my foglights is fogged....that is, it has some moisture on the lens. It has been wet out here in SoCal recently.... Anyway, does this mean that this foglight is no longer any good? Will the moisture go away or should I take it out and let it sit in the sun or warm it in a certain orientation for a period of time to evaporate the moisture? The foglight still lights and the lens is not broken. Thanks for your help, Marc 95M3 with one-eyed fogging....

#8. bmw nut roomates wanted for estate on SF penisula - from Juan Bruce

Date: Mon, 05 May 2003 00:23:43 -0700 From: "Juan Bruce" <jbrucebmw@hotmail.com> Subject: bmw nut roomates wanted for estate on SF penisula I apologize up front for the spam but it does have some M3 content in that we could have a great place for hosting upgrade fests, wrenching on our cars and general automotive debauchery if I can find enough roommates to fill this house. Several friends and I are going to rent a rather palatial house on the San Francisco Peninsula. We are professionals and Stanford grads in our mid twenties who are looking for fun, interesting, and social roommates. We have a few potential houses lined up in the Woodside area and we are looking for additional roommates. Each of the houses has a three car or larger garage and will have plenty of room for projects. I would love to find a car nut and track junky to join us. We will, of coarse, have speed channel, a variety of tools and hopefully the house will be a good place for automotive gatherings. If you are interested drop me an email.
