#3. new info on Kumho Ecsta V700 tires - from Mdriver13@aol.com
Top
Date: Sat, 10 May 2003 08:28:37 EDT From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: new info on Kumho Ecsta V700 tires Group, I thought I'd provide this latest bit of information as a help to others using or intending to use the new Kumho Ecsta V700's. Seems Kumho changed rubber compound for this year, and TireRack has an agreement with Kumho only to be shipped the "new" compound (tires are marked K6A on the sidewall). The "old" compound is marked K8A. However, I was sent one K6A in the set, so some last year "old" tires are still getting thru. After calling Noah at TireRack, who explained the whole deal to me, he promptly sent me a new tire (K6A) which I received yesterday...as a replacement. Just wanted to pass this info along, and acknowledge the great customer service from Noah at TireRack, (hey, the guy even owns a '96 M3). #5. Track Wheels - from KResener@aol.com
Top
Date: Sat, 10 May 2003 10:01:35 EDT From: KResener@aol.com Subject: Track Wheels I'm *this* close to convincing myself that I need a set of track tires and wheels to reduce the wear on my street tires for the couple of DE's I do a year. (down the slope I go...) Although I'm inclined to search out a used set, for price comparison I'd like to know what a new set of wheels would run me. What seems to be the wheel of choice for the track amongst you track junkies? I'd assume cheap, and somewhat lightweight without regard for looks as they'll be on track only? Tire Rack has just too many choices... Car is a '95 ///M3 with H&R Sports and Koni's. Any suggestions appreciated. Kurt

I was about to buy them new, but found a used set in excellent condition. Even new, they're a pretty good deal. When I last checked (thinking of getting a second set for the street) they were $288 each. I can't remember the exact weight, but they're MUCH lighter than stock. Right around 16-17 pounds each, I believe. I also think they actually look really nice on the E36M3s... especially silver ones. ;) Jonathan L. >From: KResener@aol.com > > >What seems to be the wheel of choice for the track amongst you track >junkies? > I'd assume cheap, and somewhat lightweight without regard for looks as >they'll be on track only? > _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

#9. Tire trailer question - from Garrett
Top
Date: Sat, 10 May 2003 15:36:07 -0700 (PDT) From: Garrett <garrettmcw@yahoo.com> Subject: Tire trailer question Group, I'm putting together one of those Harbor Freight utility trailers and would appreciate some advice on tire mounting arrangements. I've seen them on vertical posts made of galvanized pipe, and I've seen them placed horizontally with a pipe through all four tires plus welded-on side brackets. I was all set to go with vertical pipes but find that my tires are too big to really fit well on the trailer that way. They hang off the front and sides--it'd be better if they were on the trailer bed completely, and them being so far forward makes me worry about tongue weight. Another idea is to bolt two 4"x4" posts across the trailer bed with the tires in a horizontal stack between them, secured with a motorcycle strap or chain through a PVC pipe. I'm trying to keep it simple and avoid welding (since it's way over budget already). Also, the Contico job-box that most people seem to use is pretty cheapo but I haven't found a better alternative. Any suggestions or feedback on all this would help a bunch... thanks. -Garrett

#10. Auto-x report :-) - from DocWyte

Date: Sat, 10 May 2003 15:52:51 -0700 (PDT) From: DocWyte <josh_wyte@yahoo.com> Subject: Auto-x report :-) Well, today was the first auto-x for me and my co-driver in my '95 M3. I have stock springs with externally (front and rear) single adjustable koni's, stock sways. Kumho victoracers (used), jc euro hfm intake/chip. I set the car up 1 turn from soft in front, 2 turns from soft in the rear, 36psi front, 32 psi rear. The car demonstrated alot of stick and was very neutral. I could throttle steer with no problem at all, but the rear end stayed planted otherwise. It did dance a little under hard braking if I was turning, but nothing dramatic. The course was long, the ftd was barely under 1 minute. I ran the entire course in 2nd gear, but was bouncing off the fuel cut several times. I probably should've gone into 3rd a few times, but I didn't want to have to deal with downshifting immediately and losing momentum. It wasn't a really technical course, there were some tight sections and a few kinks to throw you off balance, but mostly it was hard to learn because of it's length. We started out slow, but then put down the hammer and started to go back and forth with times as we usually do. Usually the last person to drive for the day gets the fastest time. I may have to pull rank as the car owner to make sure I have that last run. :) We were consistently nipping right at the heels of the guys running full coilovers, so I was extremely pleased at the cars performance. I don't see the need to upgrade the suspension at all. I feel the car is plenty competitive and with more practice for me, I'll probably be faster than most guys with coilovers. The kumhos were great, but got a little greasy in the afternoon when the sun really started to pound down. Compounding that, a friend had borrowed my tire pressure gauge and not returned it, so we were unable to check pressures and bleed down in between runs. We were also pretty much running back to back, so the tires really got hot. When the afternoon was done, we brought the car into the pits and checked the temps, we needed to drop 8psi front and rear!! No wonder the car felt so happy... Anyways, I nipped my co-driver by a few tenths with a 64.322, which I'm happy with. I'm sure there's at least another second left on the course tho. We were getting sloppy at the end due to the tires and kept collecting cones. :( Anyways, what a blast!! If you haven't tried it, you're really missing out... -josh ===== __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo. http://search.yahoo.com
