When I got out of LA, I was cruising at about 80-95 until I hit NV. Then I was averaging about 110-140 with runs up to 164 (indicated). I set my average speed for the trip and by the time I got to TX, I was averaging 125 with stops. From TX to the Mississippi River, my ave. dropped to about 100. When I hit the NJ border, I was down to 85. From the NJ border to home (70 miles?), my average went to 68mph. I went on interstates 10>40>44>70>80. The V1 will help more and more the further east you go but there's a lot of instant on radar and helicopter pacers out there so use common sense with the V1. Oh.... and Redbull keeps your ass up if you get tired. -Bobby

I had to adjust to driving 70 again. It just felt really, really slow. My underpanel fell off at about 90-95 in CA. I haven't had a problem since I replaced it with the JTD aluminum underpanel. -Bobby ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jason Knight" <knight2244@yahoo.com> > > Reading these comments, two things occur to me. > First, this absolutely sounds like a blast. #5. Whining Noise in Tranny or Diff - from Don Trieu

Date: Fri, 16 May 2003 15:51:32 -0700 From: "Don Trieu" <trieu@mbkengineers.com> Subject: Whining Noise in Tranny or Diff All: I hear some sort of whining noise in my 98 M3 (5 Speed, 81K miles) in first gear at low speeds <10-15 MPH. I don't know if it's coming from the tranny or differential. I bought the car used so I think it was like this from day one. Does anyone else have this problem and if so how did you fix it? It doesn't bother me too much, its just a passenger pointed it out to me and he has an M-Coupe with the same engine and tranny and doesn't have the same noise. TIA Don

Redbull and Starbucks doubleshots (the little canned drinks they sell at stores). The doubleshots have about 2x as much caffeine as redbull I think... but redbull is a good thing. I did my SF-Seattle drive one time, starting at 1:40pm.. I felt tired after about an hour, started getting sleepy (less than an hour of sleep the night before). Decided I'd like to at least wait until it was DARK to take a nap (but had been planning to drive straight thru the night), so I went for some doubleshots. Long story short, I made it to Seattle all in one night. Intense amounts of caffeine really DO keep you awake and focused, although you focus like a laser and lose some peripheral senses.. case in point that same night I almost took out a deer that jumped in front of my ellipsoids while I was going 85mph.. Less than 100 feet in front of me. Thanks to BMW brakes, ABS, and quick (if dulled) reflexes, I missed it by about an inch at 35mph. Seriously. I was looking for deer marks on my corner and fender after I stopped. I think if I had been 100% alert (without caffeine) I might have reacted slightly quicker -- I sure as hell won't do a long drive when I'm that tired again -- but the caffeine REALLY works. you just need to get a lot of it. - reid

Didn't take 130 for mine to come > loose. I did it in a spanking new E46....the reason I had to stop in Colorado Springs (other than I'd never been there) was to visit the dealer and get the 1,000 mile service (it was that far from Chicago). I gotta say, this was the best way to avoid the HUGE markup they wanted out here in Cali, and still visiting friends and seeing the best scenery of my life. (I kept having to stop and take pictures). Taking I-80: FYI, Wyoming has got to be the most boring driving...just dirt. It is truly amazing how many miles of fencing there is, enclosing nothing but dirt (really, there is very little grass!) for as far as the eye can see. Driving west of Salt Lake is interesting (if you are into salt flats). I do recommend that everyone drive across the American West, sometime in your life (East of the Mississippi is pretty lame in comparison). You will never appreciate the size nor the grandeur of this country until you do. Also, you will have a better sense of what it must have taken to cross the continent by wagon (and how easy we have it now). Dan Snyder
