Do you know if they make a hood like the one I need? Fiberartz is willing to work with me on it and I think our carbon guy would probably do it as a favor, but if I could just buy something it would be nice! Not used to looking for body kit stuff... #9. Cooling System - Update - from Neil Maller
Top
Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 13:32:08 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: Cooling System - Update A couple of months back I had recounted the saga of installing the oversized PWR aluminum radiator, and having the stock cooling fan hit it and break up while on the track. Since then I've been running without a main fan, as practiced by Lowell S. and others, with no apparent ill effects. However my keenly calibrated olfactory pyrometer indicates that the underhood temperatures get high if the car idles when already hot. I would like to fit a replacement main fan, but clearly not the stock one. The objective is to move some air, but not to consume too much power. Oh, and not to hit the radiator... Someone at the track tipped me off that the fan from a Euro E36 diesel might be a good choice. It has only 7 blades (vs. stock 11), the blades are smaller, and it's moulded with an outer shroud ring connecting the blade tips. Blade pitch angle appears to be either the same or slightly lower. The overall diameter of 420 mm is identical to stock, and it has the same 3 mounting holes to the fan clutch (some BMW fans have 4). I ordered part number is 11 52 2 243 303 (list $51.25, net $41.00 from The BMW Store). It took about 3 weeks to arrive, presumably special order from the Fatherland. Fit is very satisfactory: the blades are quite shallow, and don't extend forward of the hub at all. Clearance to the radiator is at least double what it was with the stock part, and obviously this new fan will consume less power. After mounting the new fan I discovered that my fan clutch wasn't, well, clutching. It pretty much just free-wheels at any temperature or rpm. Sigh, time to order a new one - those buggers are expensive! The best in-stock price I found was just down the road from me in Indy, $132 or so from <http://www.zionsvilleautosport.com>. My car only has 75K miles on it, so checking your own fan clutch may be worthwhile. While on Zionsville's web site, I also saw that they're offering an all alloy radiator for $459, see: <http://www.zionsvilleautosport.com/store/shop.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=613 4&Product_Code=NP-ALLOYRAD> It seems to resemble my PWR, except that there's a drain plug...and one would hope that it's a true drop-in, unlike mine. I know nothing more about this radiator, but it's worth checking out for anyone who's in the market for one. Early orders get a free alloy thermostat housing and a new thermostat, which seems like a good deal. Zionsville Autosport is also a reliable BMW parts recycler, and good people to deal with. #10. Looking for ride at Sears Point - from Jason Knight

Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 07:37:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Jason Knight <knight2244@yahoo.com> Subject: Looking for ride at Sears Point The wife and I are heading to Sears / Infineon this weekend (6.28/29) to attend the NASA event there. Unfortunately, I'm not bringing the M3, and the wife's Camaro has the passenger seat delete option, so I'm looking for a ride at some point over the weekend. If any group 3 or 4 drivers or instructors could give me a couple of laps in the passenger seat, I would be very appreciative. And could repay the favor with beverages, or perhaps a spot in the shade, or time in the A/C trailer if it gets warm, or even a hearty Thank you. Jason knight2244@yahoo.com
